TELL SOMEONE ABOUT CRIME!
Police are warning motorists to be careful when selling cars following the thefts of
several vehicles over the past month.
Vehicles being offered for sale in a newspaper or magazine, and often the internet, can
attract people from far and wide to view the car. However, some come with the
intention of taking the car without paying.
In one incident, whilst the would-be buyer was being shown round the car, he jumped
into the driver’s seat, locked the doors and sped off. In another, during a test drive,
the owner and would-be buyer got out at a petrol station to inspect the engine under
brighter lights when the thief again jumped in and drove away, and in a third incident,
after the test drive and the owner was making a cup of coffee for the man who said he
would buy the car, he claimed he had left his phone in the vehicle during the test drive.
He then took the owner’s keys supposedly to recover his phone, but drove off with her
car. Bear in mind that an insurance company is unlikely to pay out if a car is stolen in
this way.
If you are selling your vehicle, never let the potential purchaser have the keys unless
you are also in the vehicle. If you drive first on a test drive, take the keys out of the
ignition until everyone is back in the car and then pass them over.
If you are buying a car, try to avoid meeting anyone in a car park, or service station. It
is a potentially safer purchase to see the owner at their home, where the registration
document should match up, and the service history is likely to be from a local garage.
You also know where the seller is if there is a problem.
Remember, don’t release the vehicle until cleared funds have been received. A cheque
should be cleared first, and make sure that a bankers’ draft is genuine – a draft may be
guaranteed funds, but not if the draft is fraudulent or stolen!
Remember to always keep your keys safe. Even a basic car is virtually impossible to
steal without the keys to disarm the alarm and immobiliser, so never leave your keys
lying around on a bar, or your desk.
If you’ve information about any crime, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, or log
on to www.mostwanted-uk.org Your call is free, no one will know you called and you may
earn a cash reward.

Bleughh, sniffle, gurrrummptt, snort. Ah yes, my husband‟s February vocabu lary. The brood and I have only had a mild variety of flu and a nasty stomach upset, fondly known as a „runny tummy‟ in our elegant abode, during which I shuffled around the house doing the chores one handed whilst simultaneously wiping four noses and dishing out spoonfuls of calpol randomly. True to form, Paul was at work during the worst spell, I can‟t complain, he is after all doing s everal jobs so that I don‟t have to do any, (his words not mine.) Now that the rush is over and I am well enough to nurse him, he has decided to catch bu bonic plague, I have to take his word for this as I can only speak from my own experience and he is obviously much more ill than I was. At least I think so, I don‟t really remember much about the flu, I know several days passed, I had some funny dreams about the children asking for food, I remember telling them to eat the three day old cold pizza in the fridge and to be careful opening the cans of daddies red bull, funny isn‟t it, the things that you dream. Then I vaguely remember Harvey sliding down the stairs on the tea tray singing „jingle bells‟ very loudly. Then, they all came down with a tummy bug after that, it‟s ironic how things hit you all at once. Oh yes and Fleur has somehow given herself a nasty scratch on her face, when I asked her how it happened she mumbled something about the gas lighter and the cat, although it is difficult to understand them at this age. Now Paul is bedridden and needy. The children love having daddy around more and are very useful as they eliminate the need for an intercom system. “Daddy wants a cup of tea”, “Daddy wants some paracetamol”, “Can daddy have a fresh hot water bottle?” I took the opportunity to give the children plenty of exercise; “Tell daddy to say please.” “Ask Daddy - One sugar or two?” “Ask Daddy – Are you sure you don‟t want coffee?” “With cream?” “And sugar?” “A biscuit?” “Wafer or chocolate?” “I didn‟t hear „Please‟.” “What? He‟s hungry? Well ask him if he wants the last of that pizza?” It was around this time that I realised I needed to go out. All day. And I still haven‟t seen the cat.
If this is your first copy then a very warm welcome to Parish Pages. We are gradually expanding our circulation after 5 years of ground work in Fair Oak and Horton Heath. We now have editions covering West End, Hedge End, Bishopstoke, Colden Common and Twyford, as well as an exciting website covering even further a field! The strength over the years of the magazines has been its community content and so we ask that if you belong to an organisation, club or society please let us know the details. If you are running a charity event, then get in touch, let us help you promote it! Of course we rely on local business to advertise with us and to that end we have a proven track record of success in all areas. So for excellent, affordable, local advertising please give us a call or drop us a line. We look forward to hearing from you.

Pete Broom and Sheena Graham, co co-ordinators of Fair Oak and Horton Heath Street Pastors, are delighted to announce their areas second anniversary on 8
th February 2010.
On February 8
th 2008, 18 newly qualified Street
Pastors hit the streets of Fair Oak and Horton Heath. A further 6 trainees qualified in October 2009
making a pool of 24 fully trained individuals covering Fair Oak and Horton Heath every Friday night, 8pm to 1am, come rain or shine, frost or snow. During the two years, two Street Pastors have retired, one due to ill health and one transferred to the Eastleigh initiative. We have 22 Street Pastors in our area. The commitment of the Street Pastors to the work of helping to make the streets in our community a safer and kinder place to be, is reflected in the fact that a team were out both years on Christmas and New Years Eve. Over the last two years Street Pastors have spoken to 4748 people with 104 tours of duty being completed and all by just 24 volunteers ranging in ages from 25 to 68 years old. Over the last two years there has been a 37% drop in crime compared to the year prior to the Street Pastors being launched and this is partly attributed to the success of the “semi-rural” trinity which has been formed in the Fair Oak and Horton Heath area between the Parish Council, Police and the local Churches working together with the Youth Service. Chief Inspector Boyles says, “I have no doubt that this success is down to the joint working of all parties in the area, but I remain convinced that the Street Pastors have played a key role in this reduction. I am thankful for their continued commitment and support they show to the community.” The news of new local areas coming on board brings with it great encouragement as the villages of West End, Hedge End, Botley, Chandler‟s Ford and Bishopstoke will soon have teams of their own on the streets. A new training session began on 6
th March, 2010 and 50 trainees selected from
the above areas are attending the 12 week long course. All our trainees are asked to complete an in depth personal checking process and are selected from local churches. The gospel is behind everything we do but it is not at the forefront of what we say. For more information email Sheena and Pete at [email protected] or phone 07970 543098. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Parish Council, the Police and the Youth Services for their valued input in to this efficient and effective partnership

The Fret Connexxion
Baking More Than A Dozen There are few guitarists who match the diversity, dexterity and experience of Duck Baker. Growing up in Richmond Virginia in the 1950s and playing in the usual teenage rock and roll bands of the time he developed a life-time interest in acoustic blues after moving to San Francisco in the early seventies. His first recordings for Kicking Mule Records showcased an eclectic mix of styles which he perfected from 1975 to 1980. Blues of course, but also ragtime, bluegrass and jazz played in finger-style but unusually for a non-classical player, often on nylon strung guitars.
In recent years he has developed a strong interest in free jazz and has two CDs on release shortly on the Mighty Quinn record label. Everything That Rises Must Change
and also The Waltz Lesson recorded with London based clarinetist Alex Ward and bass-player Joe Williamson. Free jazz is not appealing to everyone so listeners who are put off by very modern music may wish to approach these with caution! The album is rounded with more mainstream pieces by John Coltrane and Theolonius Monk among other jazz greats. This trio reflects the Duck Baker artistry of the past few years since his move to London. Returning to his earlier roots and perhaps of more interest to the general listener is his new solo album on the Les Cousins label, The Roots And Branches Of American Music. Under the guise of this rather documentary title you will find a delightful mixed collection of blues, ragtime, gospel and swing. This is Duck Baker at his best with unorthodox chord voicings and subtle couterpoint taking the place of mere dry technical displays of guitar technique. It is this most comprehensive of repertoires which he will be expo on Sunday May 2nd in concert at The Picture House in Southampton Ocean Village. Tickets are available from www.picturehouses.co.uk or 0871 704 2060. Enjoy.
Andi Cee celebrates the art guitar every Wednesday 8 – 10 pm when he presents The Fret Connexxion on Skyline 102.5 FM and on-line at www.skyline.fm. You can contact him with requests, playlist ideas or local gigs and bands at [email protected]

Are Budget Airlines Worth The Saving?
Budget airlines started in the early 1990s, offering lower fares for no-
frills travel. The likes of EasyJet, Ryanair and Flybe have
increasingly offered cheaper and cheaper flights to destinations
(generally speaking) all over Europe, saving money by getting rid of
those in flight „extras‟ such as movies, food and peanuts. But are the
budget airlines taking us for a pricey ride? And is no frills travel really
worth the saving?
The low cost airlines‟ practice of „unbundling‟ has come under severe
criticism over the years, attracting the attention of the Office of Fair
Trading (OFT) whilst frustrating customers and gaining the companies plenty of negative press too. Because of this
unbundling airlines have been able to advertise their lowest fares without representing the true cost of travel. For
example those famous Ryanair 1p travel deals do not cover airport fees, taxes, baggage handling charges, credit
card fees or the many other additional charges you may be subject too. And that‟s not even to mention the return
flight which is inevitably more expensive.
The OFT has recently demanded more transparency from airlines in their costings and in 2007 ruled that full prices
should be advertised, representing the total necessary spend on the journey promoted. Despite this low cost airlines
have repeatedly flouted the rule, opening themselves up to legal action and leaving consumers confused.
If the pricing of flights isn‟t enough to bamboozle you in to flying BA the confusing websites might. Ryanair has
recently been the subject of publicity for producing a badly designed website which is near impossible to navigate.
Perhaps a cunning ploy for a company who charge £1 a minute to call their support desk. Equally the policies
regarding cancellations doled out to the buyers of low cost flights are just as inflexible. When travelling with children
or the elderly in particular if something can go wrong it usually will. So with this in mind the added protection afforded
to the customers of more expensive airlines in the event of a cancellation could well be worth the spend.
It‟s not just the lead up to a flight which makes travellers wonder why they got sucked in by a low cost airline. Once
at the airport the lack of allocated seats cause bunfights amongst normally civilised people and priority boarding is
offered at a price. The strict rules on baggage allowances lead to added costs and long waits as fellow travellers
argue with staff.
Then, once on the plane, you‟ll often find yourself in a dirty, torn and sticky plastic seat with the very minimum of
legroom and no ability to recline. Food is unpleasant and wildly overpriced, adding to the overall spend on your flight.
Safety demonstrations are often difficult to see, carried out by staff rather than on a television.
With recent announcements that Ryanair intend to start charging £1 each time you use the toilet on their flights could
the literal penny spending be the final straw for low cost travellers?

Description of ETNet and Community Farm Project, Highbridge Farm
Eastleigh Transition Network (ETNet) is a group of local people
who are taking practical actions on climate change, oil depletion,
and environmental damage. These issues are affecting the
poorest people of the world first, and will affect more and more
people. We are taking positive steps to help rebuild our sense
of community, and improve our local communities' resilience to
cope with the challenges by learning and sharing skills to help
us grow our own food and produce energy locally. We encourage and protect wildlife in the area
- they are essential for natural processes we depend on to
flourish.
To reduce the cost of food by reducing 'food miles', we aim to
increase the abundance and availability of local fresh food in
Eastleigh Borough. We are encouraging residents to grow
food in their own and friends‟ gardens, and in local
allotments. We also plan to grow some of our own food in a
field at Highbridge Farm that the farmer has offered for a Community Farm Project - and to
enable other people to join in the scheme.
We need to fence off the growing area at the farm from rabbits before we sow seeds and grow
plug plants! We are hoping to create a strawbale or other sustainably built community building
at the farm, for people to wash their hands, as a place to shelter and rest, and to make and drink
cups of tea! We also need to construct some toilet accommodation at the farm (possibly
compost toilets, if the site is suitable).
There is a woodland area at the farm that has possibilities
for locally sourced fuels and wood products, and the remains
of an orchard that could be replanted as an orchard or as
agroforestry – in either case bees could also be kept in this
area eventually.
We are very happy for you to contact us if you are interested
in any of the ideas.
We look forward to hearing from you. For Community Farm Growing Project information contact:
