From the Head’s Chair

I have been very impressed this week by the positive attitude of many of our children as they greet me with a cheery “Good morning” and take time to talk

to me about their day and their learning. Our school values are really important and Respect is at the core of what is important to everyone associated with Riverside. I enjoyed my lunch with the KS1 children on Wednesday and was struck by how keen the children were to introduce themselves and tell me a little bit about their school and their families. I am really enjoying this aspect of my role and

look forward to getting to know the children and parents in the coming weeks. I will be out and about in the playground as much as I can at drop off and pick up times, so please take the opportunity to come and say hello and let me know if you have any questions. On that note, I led two workshops on Wednesday (one in the afternoon and one in the evening) as an opportunity for parents to come and meet me and discover a little bit about our vision and priorities for Riverside and how we want to work together with our children and families to ensure they make the best possible progress. I must say I was disappointed by the turnout, but did enjoy some very positive conversations with the parents who did attend and I have some good ideas about how to help parents become more involved with the school and their children’s education. More info to follow…

During their visit to Maidenhead Heritage Centre this week, Year 6 children learnt about World War 2 and how it affected Maidenhead itself. They looked at how rationing worked, spoke to Beryl, who was a child in Maidenhead during the war and felt what it would have been like to fly a Spitfire. Well done Year 6 children and a big thank you to Miss Palfrey and her team for arranging and escorting the trip.I think it is really important that every child at

Riverside has the opportunity to succeed, learn and make the best possible progress. When a child is spotted being brilliant, either with their work or their behaviour, they are sent to me to have their name written in my Golden Folder. The children receive a special golden Headteacher’s award and if they are sent

to me on three occasions, they I will write a special postcard and post it to your home so you can celebrate their success with them. It is equally important that every child enables their classmates to learn and their teachers to teach, so on occasions I may have to speak to children about making better choices. If a child is sent to me on three occasions I will contact parents to discuss your child’s behaviour so we can work together to help ensure they understand the expectations of the school and are able to make the right choices about their learning. I look forward to your support with both these aspects of our work at school.

A couple of requests reminders this week: Please contact the office if your contact details have changed so that you can

be contacted in emergencies.

Please let you child’s class teacher know if you have any queries or worries about your child at school and they will be more than happy to help.

At this time of year the weather is starting to change and with it comes the sniffles. If every child could donate a box of tissues for their classroom, that would really help! Please bring them in next week if you can. Thank you for your support.

Many thanks – have a good weekend and I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday. I would also like to wish our families and children a belated Happy Eid and hope your celebrations and time with your families went to plan.

Finally this week I would like to say what a pleasure it was to visit the Nursery and Reception classes this week. It is amazing that the children have settled so quickly and are already busy building new relationships, exploring their new environment and taking every opportunity to learn at the beginning of their Riverside journey. Many thanks to Mrs Dawson and the EYFS team!

Have a good weekend.

Healthy Lunch BoxesRiverside promotes healthy eating, so we need to encourage our children to have healthy food in their lunchboxes. Please support the school by ensuring your child’s lunchbox does not contain crisps, sweets, chocolate, nuts, jam or fizzy drinks.

But if you want a hot lunch then …

Lunch MoneyPlease remember that children need to give their lunch money in to the class teacher and NOT to the office.

Lunches are FREE for the younger children: Maple, Mulberry, Chestnut, Cherry Blossom and Beech.
