At Wesley Institute we want your experience to be one of great significance and transformation. Both in and out of the classroom, our collaborative community gives you the opportunity to make friends across all schools, and to attend a variety of performances and productions throughout the year. We are also committed to the ensemble-like atmosphere our campus offers, which encourages interaction between students, and between students and staff.
Beginning with a Harbour Cruise at Orientation, we hope you see instantly why the Wesley Institute community is so contagious! During semester, look forward to activities run by the student council, including college-wide events and social nights, weekly gatherings and chapels, and BBQs and volleyball games on the grassy knoll.
You won’t want to miss the Student Retreat held every year, where students relax together, as well as grow from the wisdom of speakers, both local and international.

HEAD OF DANCEADELE HYLANDBEd, GradDipEd, Cert IVA&WT, MEd
As a performer, Adele has represented Australia in three World Championships and is one of only two Australian dancers to have won National Titles in four styles of dance. Her choreography credits include the Australian hit film, Strictly Ballroom, television shows Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Dancing, and a variety of television commercials.Adele was awarded the United States Heritage Award for International Services to Dance for her coordination and choreography in the Sydney 2000 Olympics Closing Ceremony. She is a director of Dancesport Australia and the Australian National Dance Association and a member of the Tertiary Dance Council of Australia and the World Dance Council Education Commission.
HEAD OF DRAMADR HERMAN PRETORIUS BA, BA(Hons)CreatWrit&Lit, STD, BA(Hons)Drama, MADrama, PhD
Herman is an internationally recognised director and lecturer, having worked professionally as a playwright, author, translator, editor, actor (in both theatre and radio), theatre manager, and director and producer in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He was CEO and Artistic Director of The Street Theatre in Canberra, winning the MEAA Green Room Award (ACT) 2004 for The Development of Local Professional Theatre. He is passionate about new works and has been instrumental in devising and presenting workshops in directing, stagecraft, playwriting, community development and social awareness in inter-cultural settings.

Michelle has been a designer and educator for the last 20 years. After completing her undergraduate qualifications at the University of Western Sydney she embarked on a professional career that includes studio and agency design, brand management and running her own freelance design business. Leading design teams and engaging with small business to multinational clients, Michelle has worked on a diverse range of projects including print, product and new media design.
Michelle’s love of design inspired her to join Wesley Institute as a lecturer in 2005, witha focus on design thinking through research and experimental methodologies. Michelle completed her Master of Design majoring in branding at UTS in June 2009. In 2010, Michelle was appointed Head of Graphic Design at Wesley Institute, implementing a new degree in 2011 that focuses on design thinking, experimentation and responsible design.

Heva first performed on the piano when she was four years old. During her tertiary studies, Heva travelled to 33 countries as part of her research, and was awarded numerous scholarships and prizes, as well as being awarded both Austrian and Australian Citizenships for her success in her field of music. Her music has been performed in concerts, international seminars, symposiums, conferences and music festivals in Asia, Europe, America, Canada and Australia.

HEAD OF THEOLOGY IN KOREANREV DR KYE WON LEEBTh, MDiv, ThM, PhD
Dr Lee is the founding Director of the Korean Theological Program at Wesley Institute and the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships. His research areas of interest include union with Christ, Christology, migration theology, contemporary theology, pilgrimage and integrative theology. Dr Lee is the author of Living in Union with Christ: The Practical Theology of Thomas F. Torrance, published in 2003. Publishing a number of articles, he is also a minister of the Uniting Church in Australia.

Julie Mathews has worked in the Christian school sector for over twenty years.Immediately before coming to Wesley Institute, she was Deputy Principal of CovenantChristian School, Belrose. In 2008, she joined Wesley Institute as Director of Teaching& Learning for the Graduate Diploma of Education course. Since July 2009 Julie has been the Head of Education. Julie is currently an EdD candidate, researching partnershipsbetween universities and schools concerning professional experience for postgraduate teaching students. Julie’s personal faith has fuelled her passion for transforming lives and developing excellent teachers for the next generation.
HEAD OF THEOLOGYDR JIM HARRISONBA, DipEd, MA, PhD
Jim’s PhD from Macquarie University’s Ancient History Department was awarded in 1997. His particular interest, as an ancient historian, focuses on the social distinctiveness of the early Christians in their first-century context. His book, Paul’s Language of Grace in Its Graeco-Roman Context, was the 2005 Winner of the Biblical Archaeology Society Biannual Publication Award for Best Book Relating to the New Testament. His third book, Paul and the Imperial Authorities at Thessalonica and Rome: A Study in the Conflict of Ideology, was published by Mohr Siebeck in 2011. Jim has been widely published in international journals, and has contributed chapters to many books, including Stanley Porter’s ‘Pauline Studies’ series (Brill: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010), Udo Schnelle’s recent volume on Romans (Peeters: 2009) and New Documents Illustrating Early Christianity Vols 8, 9 and 10 (forthcoming 2011). Jim speaks regularly at Australian and international conferences on the New Testament.

Jeff Rutter is Head of the Graduate School of Counselling and Dean of Students atWesley Institute. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) inPsychology and Religious Studies from the University of Tennessee, a Master’s degree inTheology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology fromWright State University.
Jeff came to Wesley Institute from Colorado Christian University, where he was a full-time lecturer in the Christian counselling program founded by Larry Crabb. Jeff also has several years’ experience in ministry and professional psychology. His areas of interest include metaphorical aspects of counselling,client change processes and the intersection of psychology and Christian spirituality and metaphor.

International Performance and Cultural Experience
Build your performance skills with a yearly choir performance and cultural experience, performing in celebrated
locations around the world. In 2007, the choir won the first prize in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth
Music Festival in Vienna Austria, and in 2011 won second prize in the same competition against thirty other
international choirs. In 2008 the choir travelled to China for two weeks as part of the Olympic celebrations, while
in 2009 the choir followed in the footsteps of Bach, performing in many locations across France and Germany.
In 2010, the choir visited Hong Kong, Korea and Japan, and in 2011, the choir performed in Spain, France,
Switzerland, Austria and Poland. As a music student, you will have the opportunity to audition for this study
experience. The tuition fee for this unit includes major travel expenses and is covered by FEE-HELP.

The Bachelor of Theology equips students to integrate sound theology in everyday life, and in vocations beyond traditional ministry roles. Wesley Institute has over twenty years’ experience integrating faith and vocation, particularly in the arts and, more recently, in teaching. For instance, by combining a Bachelor of Theology with a Graduate Diploma of Education, or Master of Teaching, our graduates can become Secondary or Primary School teachers in a Christian school.

Wesley Institute’s postgraduate pre-service
Education qualifications are taught within a
Christian framework, preparing teachers for
teaching in Christian, Independent and State
schools. Our teacher training acknowledges
and embraces the tremendous fulfilment and
satisfaction that is a part of teaching, and the
many opportunities teachers have to make a
positive difference in the lives of children and
young adults.
Beginning with a compulsory on-campus
orientation, the course is delivered via online
learning. This delivery mode offers students
the flexibility to undertake course work at
their own convenience. The course includes
supervised classroom experience in blocks
of 4-5 weeks, normally in schools within an
hours’ drive for most students.

The Master of Counselling opens doors to a
vast network of professional resources and
qualifies you for membership in appropriate
peak bodies and professional guilds such as
the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation
of Australia (PACFA). With an emphasis on
integrating therapeutic skills with a Christian
worldview, this course is based upon a
comprehensive, common body of professional
knowledge, skills and values. The course units
are designed to enable students to utilise a
range of theories, concepts of practice, and
research and practical skills relevant to working
with clients in a variety of contexts including
counselling agencies, welfare organisations,
community centres, educational institutions,
NGO’s, chaplaincies, inpatient and outpatient
clinical settings and private practice. Students
are able to study full-time or part-time, and
in the afternoons or evenings. Weekend
intensives are also available as a fast-track
through the course.

Pathways to TeachingInterested in furthering your studies? Wesley Institute’s one year Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) can be added on completion of a bachelor degree in the Institute’s Dance, Drama, Graphic Design, Music and Theology programs, providing the qualifications necessary to teach in Secondary Schools. The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is delivered through the convenience of online learning, providing students flexibility in their graduate studies
Biblical Sites Field Study Expand your historical and theological insights through Wesley Institute’s Biblical Sites Field Study.
In 2009 students embarked on a three-week educational exploration of Egypt, Israel and Jordan, while 2011 brings theopportunity to study in Turkey, Greece and Italy. As students travel, with an experienced lecturer and guide, through many of the sites and places from the Bible, the field study explores the significance and history of selected ancient countries. Tuition for this unit includes major travel expenses. Students may have access to FEE-HELP for the tuition fee.
Australia Studies CentrePartnering with the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), Wesley Institute houses the Australia Studies Centre at its Drummoyne campus. Students from all over the USA and Canada come to Sydney to study, participate in service placements and live in homestays with local families in order to help students encounter the Australia that tourists never see. From art and ministry to drama and dance, students in the ASC have the opportunity to pursue their passions and interests alongside Wesley Institute students.

SCHOLARSHIPSScholarships may be awarded to students
with exceptional creative and academic
talent. The Scholarship Committee awards
scholarships based on recommendations from
Heads of Schools. Enquire about a Scholarship
upon application. The terms and conditions
of Scholarships are explained to the
Scholarship recipient.
THEOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPSThe Gordon Moyes Scholarship is awarded
to a student in the School of Theology who
demonstrates academic merit and commitment
to pastoral ministry. This scholarship
covers half the tuition fees in the Bachelor
of Theology for two years, depending on
academic progress.
FEE-HELPWesley Institute is an approved Higher Education Provider (HEP) under the
Commonwealth Higher Education Support Act. This means that eligible students
enrolling in the Institute’s awards can apply for FEE-HELP assistance.
FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth Government interest-free loan given to eligible fee-
paying students to help pay their tuition fees. Eligible students are Australian citizens
and holders of permanent humanitarian visas. FEE-HELP is available to both full-time
and part-time students and there is no means test. Graduates repay their loan through
the tax system once their income exceeds $44,912 (the 2010/11 figure).
A loan fee of 25% applies to FEE-HELP loans for undergraduate courses. This fee is
added to the student’s debt at the time of enrolment in each unit of study. No loan fee
applies to FEE-HELP loans for postgraduate courses.

of Canada Bay, within walking distance of a diverse range of cafes, restaurants and
boutique shops, and a short bus ride to Sydney’s beautiful landmarks and beaches.
Only seven kilometres west of the Sydney CBD, Wesley Institute is easily accessible by
private or public transport. Parking is available on campus and in surrounding streets.

A variety of student accommodation is available in Sydney, whether
it be a lodge, private renting or in a home stay. Once you are enrolled
we will provide advice and referrals to assist you with your

Is orientation compulsory?Yes. Orientation gives you the opportunity to meet students and staff, become familiar with the campus, obtain your Student ID card, complete the enrolment process and complete study and research workshops.
If I am in the area, could I come and check out the campus?Absolutely! You can either call the Marketing Office on +61 2 9819 8824 and book a campus tour (recommended) or go to Reception.
How do I audition if I don’t live in Sydney?You can send in a DVD/video of your audition. Check course booklets for further details.
Are courses availableOnline or by distance education?Yes. Our Teacher Education qualifications are offered via online learning. We are planning to offer more courses online in the near future.
