Alegre Industrial Studio has designed the first optic glasses which include in their frame an electronic device that interacts with smartphones, tablets and personal computers.

Weon Glasses are a unisex pair of glasses which can be purchased in optician’s shops and allow the assembly of prescription or sunglasses lenses. Furthermore, they are capable of imperceptibly interacting with the wearer and notifying them of any kind of notice, as well as many other functions which include the remote activation of the photo camera, controlling slide presentations, playing music, skipping tracks or adjusting the mobile phone’s volume. The first prototype of these glasses, which isn’t on sale yet, was launched on the last World Mobile Congress in Barcelona and it was one of the ten finalists in the 4YFN Mobile Start-Ups Competition. The glasses will be in the market by May 2014.

Their distinguishing feature is a technology capsule and Bluetooth 4.0 chip built into the frame and invisible to the naked eye. Alegre Industrial Studio has been the responsible for integrating all this technology within the lightweight and stylish frame.

The glasses, connected with an app to the user’s Smartphone or Tablet, interact with the user on a LED, only visible to the wearer, which is lighted up in different colours and different flash patterns to show what’s happening in the electronic device. With this app, available for both Apple (IOS) and Android, the user can choose when and for what will the LED light up: to notifying an incoming call, a chat message, an e-mail, an SMS, an event in any of the user’s social networks, an alarm, etc. Each of these notifications will have a code colour, selected by the user, which enables to interact with mobile devices, even when they are in silent mode.

But ION Glasses also have two buttons that make it possible to operate the smartphone or tablet remotely and thus take pictures, activate voice and video recorders, play or pause music, skip tracks back or forward, turn the volume up or down and skip presentation slides, etc. Furthermore, the WeON Glasses will be open source, to allow developers the adaptation of existing apps to the main function of the product.

Weon Glasses have been developed by ION EYEWEAR S.L., a 100% Spanish company composed of the entrepreneurs Ricardo Urías and Santiago Ambit. The integration and design of the electronics has been carried out by Alegre Industrial Studio and the frames will be produced in France by a leading manufacturer of the optics sector, which works with luxury brands. The glasses will be in the market by May and available in optician’s shops and tech stores, in both the EU and the USA. Its price will be similar to the current frames of the market.
