RIC Corner - Style #88 POWERHOUSE

Customer Service Corner: The Skinny on Scans

Odds & Ends

Square Peg vs Round Hole

A Word from LynnHello all,Well, here we

are, coasting in

to the holiday

season. We just

had a nice cold

snap and our first real snow. I don’t

think I’m ready for the snow and

ice, but I guess it’s about that time,

isn’t it? I’m still spending some time

on the mountain bike, and I hope

we have at least a few more weeks

before the trails ice up for good!

Do you keep up with us (“Westone Labs”)

on Facebook? If so, don’t forget to check

out our “Lab Wars.” We’re holding a

competition to see which one of our

labs can make the coolest new custom

earpiece design. Our Facebook fans will

get to help pick the winner by voting on

the lab with the best design. When you

vote, you’ll also be entered into a drawing

for a set of our new Westone 4 High

Performance Earphones! Before long,

we’ll be including some of these new

designs in our normal line of earpieces

This month’s featured RIC earpiece is the Style #88.

This earpiece is designed only for high gain, or in hearing instrument vernacular, POWER receivers. The Style #88 is a canal style by default and like last month’s featured Style #89, is available in silicone (recommended) and acrylic material but it has no stepped-back vent. If space allows, all venting options are available. Because these power RIC’s have a large “doghouse” (yes, they actually resemble a doghouse) shape that often will not fit into an ear canal, we offer four hybrid earpiece styles.

#88-5 (canal lock)

#88-8 (half shell)

#88-2 (skeleton)

#88-6 (full shell)

Since the Style #88 is designed to accept only the “bare” metal receiver, the plastic receiver housing MUST be removed before inserting it into the earpiece. The silicone version has a deep pocket made into the bottom, outside edge of the receiver cavity.

so you can order them for your patients.

Look for us on Facebook (facebook.com/

westonelabs)….we’ll be posting the

entries before the end of the month.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

You may have noticed a new “end” on the pop cord that we use for the Style #47 HPD with the convertible option. This new end is oriented at a 90º angle, which allows the cord to point down instead of out, for a more recessed, practical fit. This new cord anchor is available as an option on most of our hearing protectors by simply noting “Pop Cord” in the special instructions section of the order form. And like our standard threaded cord, the pop cord is available in a wide variety of colors:

Or in the case of an earpiece, you can’t push (or pull) a tube through an ear canal with a diameter that’s equal to or smaller than the tube itself. Even though we seem to be stating the obvious, we bring it up because we’re asked to perform this tubing “magic” on a daily basis. The reality is that with a small ear, the size of the canal frequently precludes drilling a sound bore large enough to tube through without compromising the structural integrity of the earpiece. The same principle applies when a parallel vent is requested on a small ear canal earpiece. By necessity, we have to angle the vent into the sound bore, which again makes a tube through impossible.

Please know that we always attempt to tube through, but when this is not practical for the reasons noted above, we will tube as far into the sound bore as possible. If you’re working with a silicone earpiece and are concerned about tube retention, simply ask us to “weld” the tube. We’ll permanently attach the tube using special adhesives. For vinyl or acrylic earpieces, we use standard material-specific adhesives to secure the tube. As always, please feel free to call our Technical Services Department at 800-525-5071 for additional information.

Our customers keep asking if Westone scans ear impressions for earpiece orders. We automatically scan ear impressions for all FIT® earpiece orders. Our FIT manufacturing process uses a scan of the impression which is then modeled digitally and printed rather than manufactured like a traditional earpiece. The scan of the impression and the digital file of the earpiece order are stored for two years, making reordering a breeze.

This same scanning service is available for “non-Fit®” orders for a nominal fee of $7.00 per impression.

As previously mentioned, scans are kept for two years as opposed to physical impressions, which are stored for 60 days from the invoice date in our Kalamazoo lab and 90 days in our Colorado Springs lab.

This allows the inserted receiver to sit down into the cavity and lock in place. Because the receiver cavity is designed for a tight friction fit, we recommend the use of a small insertion tool (e.g. the blunt end of a crochet hook) to push the receiver into place. After insertion, the entire receiver should be sitting 2 to 3mm into the earpiece with the back-bottom edge of the receiver sitting down into the receiver cavity.

The acrylic version’s receiver cavity is lined with a soft material to provide the same tight friction fit of the “bare” metal receiver but without the deep pocket seen in the silicone version. We still recommend the use of a blunt-ended insertion tool when inserting the receiver into the cavity of the acrylic earpiece.

The CIBS TOTAL Communication System is a ready-paired system that is an optimal solution for the hearing impaired individual in a home setting. The set consists of an audio transmitter, called Audiostreamer, a receiver called Maestro, and a Bluetooth combined microphone called Liberto. The Audiostreamer transfers all sound from your home entertainment sources such as TV, radio or MP3 player directly to the Maestro Communicator wirelessly via Bluetooth, which then provides great sound quality via the T-coil setting directly to a hearing aid or Cochlear Implant.

In addition, an individual can connect an alerting system with a line output to the Audiostreamer to automatically be made aware when the doorbell rings or the smoke alarm is set off . The signal from the alerting system always overrules any TV/home entertainment source or telephone conversation. The Audiostreamer has an integrated charger cradle which makes it easy to charge the Maestro or Liberto.
