District Cross Country-Wednesday 25 May The Cross Country Team will once again be heading off next Wednesday, May 25 to represent Wembley in the District Cross Country competition. The team has continued its weekly training sessions with Deidre Cooney and Nadine Park. The event will be held at Brimbank Park in Keilor and parents are warmly invited to attend and support the team. Allergy Awareness Week This week is Allergy Awareness Week and it is a time that we think about potentially life threatening severe allergies such as Anaphylaxis. At Wembley we have sixteen students diagnosed with anaphylaxis and several more with severe allergies. Allergens can vary from nuts, fruits to insect stings or bites. Parents are asked to not send food to school containing nuts or any nut products to help us minimize risk factors for these students. Staff at school regularly undertakes training in the identification and management of anaphylaxis and our canteen supports our Anaphylaxis policy by not selling food that may contain nuts or other identified allergens. Your support with the management of this condition is much appreciated. !National Walk to School Day-Friday 20 May On Friday thousands of children around Australia will walk to school for the National Walk to School Day. Parents and students from Wembley are encouraged to leave the car at home or park and walk to school on Friday. The benefits of walking to school are numerous and the time taken to walk can provide opportunities to talk together and get some exercise. !Ḏäṯiwuy Dreaming comes to Wembley Musica Viva will be returning to Wembley next week, this time with an incursion focusing on Aboriginal culture. We will be learning about traditional YolŦu Aboriginal dance, song and story through the dance ensemble Ḏäṯiwuy Dreaming. The concerts will be performed by members and related members of the Ḏäṯiwuy clan of North East Arnhem Land and dancers from NAISDA Dance College. This incursion will occur on Monday, 23 May (Week 7). Parents are welcome to come along to the concert that their child will attend in the hall/gym.

• 9:30 am: 4B, 4C 4D and Year 5 and 6 • 11:15 am: 3/4A, 4A and Years 2 and 3 • 1:45 pm: Prep–Year 1

The students and teachers are excited to learn more about Aboriginal culture and we are looking forward to meeting Ḏäṯiwuy Dreaming! !!

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Wembley is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. If you would like your child to participate, please return the privacy and consent form that has been distributed to your child and attached to this newsletter. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc Community announcement:

Changed Parking Conditions in St Leonards Ave. Parents are advised of the changed parking conditions on the St Leonards Avenue side of the school. During the recent school holidays “No Standing” signs were erected to enable access for delivery trucks and vehicles associated with the building works happening in the street. Council advised this week that the parking restrictions were imposed to ensure safety of our students and local residents. They also stated that is the individual driver’s responsibility to check and adhere to the parking restrictions stated. If anyone has any further questions regarding the parking around the school you are advised to contact Maribyrnong Council, Department of Transport and Civic Design.
