Wells City Football Club joined the Western league division two and won the Western league title in 1950. declining performances culminated in relegation to the second division after the 1956-57 season and after three seasons in the Western league division two, Wells City left the league.

Wells City rejoined the Somerset Senior league in 1960-61 with the Reserves competing in the Mid-Somerset Football League. The club finished very much mid-table until 1965-66 when they were third behind Street and Welton Rovers Reserves. they were Runners-up behind Paulton Rovers in 1971-72.

Relegation from the Somerset Senior league Premier division occurred at the end of the 1977-1978 season with promotion to the top section being gained at the end of the 1979-80 season. Unfortunately 1981-82 saw relegation yet again for Wells.

Promotion back to the Premier division of the County league was a long time in arriving, not until the start of the 1994-95 season would Wells City grace the top flight Somerset County Football. Soon the yo-yo effect happened once more with relegation at the end of the 1997-98 season followed by bouncing straight back up in 1998-99.

Wells City would finally reclaim the Somerset Senior Cup in 2006-07 season defeating Burnham on Sea at Weston-super-Mare’s Woodspring Stadium 2-1.

After an absence of almost fifty years, Wells City returned to the Western league division One in 2008-09 and after a mid-table finish that season, had their best season on

record in the 2009-10 season by reaching the semifinals of the Somerset Premier Cup (losing to Bridgwater Town of the Southern League (South & West) by two goals to nil); following magnificent wins against taunton town and Street Football Club (in the third and fourth round respectively).

Wells City was crowned toolstation Western league division One Champions at the end of the 2009-10 season, however after only a brief spell of 3 seasons in the Premier division found themselves relegated back into division One in 2012-13.

After a period of consolidation, City’s 2015-16 season saw double success.

Not only was promotion back to the Western league Premier division achieved, but they also won the Somerset Premier Cup – beating five teams from higher divisions, all away from home – including Weston-super-Mare of the National league South.

the 2017/18 season saw Wells City relegated, finishing bottom of the Western League Premier division.

the 2018/19 season has seen manager Nathan truckle able to put his own team together and add to his backroom staff. tom Clifford-Jones joins from Somerton as joint first team manager, Steve Bayliss also steps up from the U18’s to be first team coach, Steve Vowles remains as physio.

Nathan, CJ and Bomber have already brought a more ‘local’ feel back to the club with a young vibrant side. Pre-season has been promising, and Wells go into the forthcoming season full of optimism.

Good afternoon everyone, and a special welcome to the Athletics Ground to the players, officials and supporters of Shaftesbury Town FC.

I’d like to start this section with a huge thank you to Pete Deverall our groundsman for the fantastic work he has continued to do not only on the pitch but around the entire ground during the exhausting and draining weather, although his perma-tan has developed greatly from this. I would also like to thank Dave Green our club secretary for having been harassed by myself constantly and never ignoring the unending phone calls however tempted he was. Also, a massive thank you has to be said for the committee, club staff, volunteers and of course the supporters for the continued support. We hope that with the new structure we will be able to repay the faith shown and have a brilliant and exciting season ahead.

Last season unfortunately saw us relegated into Division One of the Western League and as a result we have decided to restructure the coaching set up and completely rebuild the squad which we hope will give us healthy competition and a strength in depth of which we lacked last year.

As the season begins, let’s have a quick reminder of our pre-season and the impact our signings have had. The off season saw a new management team set up and we are delighted to say that Tom Clifford-Jones AKA CJ has come in as joint manager whilst Steve ‘Bomber’ Bayliss has stepped up from under 18s coach to first team coach and we have also managed to retain the magical hands of Steve ‘I bleed blue’ Vowles as physio. With this team in place we believe we have a vast amount of knowledge and between us the skill set to bring the best out of all the players which in turn should lead to a positive and entertaining season. On the pitch we have been even more productive and have signed on a huge number of players, some of which were with us last season but also a lot that are new to the club. The big plus for the club is that we have stayed local in our search for talent and we are sure as the season

Good afternoongoes on the supporters will thoroughly enjoy what they see. There is not enough space on these notes to go into detail of every player signed but we will talk about individuals every week as well as player profiles.

On to the results of pre-season, throughout our six friendlies we have seen a lot of positives starting with the trip to Worle where we came out comfortable 5-1 winners. It was a great first team performance with many new faces and the goalscorers on that day were James Bayliss and a new signing from the latest crop of Burnham gems – Ryan Stiles – with four goals. We then narrowly lost 2-1 to Western Premier League side Bridgwater Town which highlighted areas we needed to work on. Our goalscorer was another Burnham signing – centre back Jack Spence. Our third friendly saw us deservedly draw 1-1 against Southern League Division One side Larkhall Athletic. Goalscorer – Ryan Stiles. We then entertained local rivals and Western Premier League side Shepton Mallet where we battled to a 2-1 victory, scoring the winner in the last minute. Always nice to get one over your rivals even if it is a friendly. Goalscorers Ryan Stiles and Liam Davies. Our fifth friendly saw us play Glastonbury Town where we won 2-0 against a well organised young side. Finally we hosted Vanarama National League side Truro City, we matched our opponents going in 0-0 at half time, but their quality showed in the second half running out 4-0 winners.

Unfortunately, we lost our first league game narrowly 2-1 against Ashton & Backwell. Goalscorer Ben Warren. We then travelled to Bishops Lydeard on Wednesday night and having controlled the game for close to its entirety we managed to lose 3-0 in what, I have to say, is one of the strangest games I have been involved in. It’s very early days and the side is still taking shape with a lot of new faces, so we didn’t expect miracles and we are still confident that a successful season is ahead of us.

Lastly, a thank you to Chaffy of 24/7 Drainage who has once again agreed to sponsor the club, and without his support it’s fair to say we might not be in the strong position we find ourselves in.

Hope you all enjoy the game today and we look forward to seeing you in the bar after!

Trucks & CJ.

Shaftesbury Football Club was established in

1888 and the clubs first success was winning

the league Cup in 1900 and then again in

1905/06 along with the league title.

in 1908/09 season Shaftesbury formed a

reserve side and also a mid-week league side

known as Shaftesbury Wednesday. in the early

1920’s the first youth team was formed called

Shaftesbury Athletic.

Shaftesbury’s next success was in 1932/33

season winning the dorset Senior league,

then the most successful period come in

the 1940/50’s when Shaftesbury won 12 cup

competitions in a 10 year period.

Shaftesbury then moved to the ground

known as Cockrams in 1974, even today still

playing here but in a slightly different located

pitch due to the arrival of tesco Supermarket.

Many more titles were won over the years

with winning the league Cup in 1976, league

Champions and Combination Cup in 1988/89,

Combination Cup Winners 1994/95, league

Winners 1996/97.

in 2004/05 Shaftesbury entered the Wessex

League and for the first time in 2005/06

entered the FA Vase and 2006/07 the FA Cup.

2011/12, Shaftesbury re-joined the dorset

Premier league, many changes happened on

and off the pitch and the re-growth of the

team showed as they started to shine year on

year in this league.

2015/16 season saw Shaftesbury Football

Club have a successful year for some time,

under new management, the 1st team

won the dorset Premier league meaning

promotion into the Wessex League (Div 1).

2016/17 season was the first return to the

Wessex league since 2004 and with a more

than expected performance through-out the

season, a top three finish saw promotion to

the Wessex Premier and Shaftesbury’s highest

level of football.

2017/18 was another successful season

finishing mid table in the Wessex Premier

league, Runners up in the dorset Senior Cup

and winners of the Salisbury hospital Cup.
