March 1, 2017 Wellness-as-a-Service (WaaS) is a form of elementary healthcare management that bundles together various services, such as lifestyle advice, health recommendations, and the monitoring of health metrics and ongoing conditions. It is facilitated by technology and can be delivered online through dashboards and in person through consultations and sales. Here are six ways that health retailers such as drugstores can deliver WaaS: 1) Integrate data collected from wearable devices and electronic health records, and create a single dashboard that provides a comprehensive overview of health data. 2) Analyze previous health concerns and prescribed treatments and remedies in order to formulate personalized healthcare plans. 3) Recommend supplements and suggest wellness routines, including physical exercises and information about fitness classes. 4) Develop and encourage collaborations between firms to promote dialog with existing customers on products and services purchased at drugstores. 5) Provide time-bound discounts and offers to subscribed members on products they buy frequently or services they use frequently. 6) Act as point of contact for assistance with and maintenance of health devices sold in stores. AnothercomplexissueisinteroperabilitybetweendevicesandWaaSdashboards.Manyhealthappshavebeendevelopedtobecontrolledfromasingleplatform,suchasApple’sHealthKit.But,inpractice,theyneedtoundergoarevolution,justassmart-homeproductsdid.Manysmart-homedevicemakersmadetheirproductsopenandcompatiblewithsmartphonemakers’platformsinordertoincreaseadoptionandaccessibility.Similarly,morehealthappanddevicemakersneedtomaketheirtechnologyanddevicesaccessibletoplatformdevelopers.

Regulation,privacyconcernsandthesharingofdataareotherissuesthatproviderswillneedtoconsidercarefully.CollaborationandthesharingofinformationarenecessaryforWaaStobeeffective,whichraisesconcernsaboutcustomerprivacyandsharingdatainanappropriatemanner.Thecollectionandsharingofdatamustcomplywithregulations,someofwhichmayinhibittheprovisionofservicesthatcouldbeincludedinthismodel.WaaSleadersneedtoengageinadialogwithregulatorybodiestoensurethatcomplianceprocedurescanbealtered,ifnecessary,withoutcompromisingconsumerdataprotections.

Anothermattertoconsideristhatmanypatientsarenotcurrentlyusingtechdevicestotracktheirwellnessorhealthconditions.Creatingapersonalizedhealthplanforpeoplewhodonotusewearablesorothertrackingdevicesmaybelessstraightforwardthancreatingoneforthosewhohavemorereadilyavailablehealthdata.

Finally,somepatientsmayberesistanttoobtainingprimarycarefromaretailclinicinsteadoffromadoctor’sclinicoremergencycareunit.ThismayrequirethatretailclinicsemployphysiciansinordertotakeadvantageofthefullpotentialofWaaS.

KeyTakeaways:Data-DrivenHealthcareCanHelpwithFutureChallengesWeliveinanageofdata.Yetinthehealthsphere,muchofitremainsfragmented,withprimaryhealthcareproviders,techfirmsandretailersallhavingseparatesystems.ThevalueofWaaSliesinbringingthesedatatogethertoofferconsumersaholisticandpreventativeapproachtohealthcare.Barriersexistrelatingtotechnology,regulationsandconsumerperceptions.However,therewardsofanintegratedviewofhealthincludebetterprevention,easierandquickerprovisionofcare,andlowercostsonacomparablebasis—whichshouldincentivizetheparticipationofgovernments,companiesandindividuals.
