It is our responsibility not onll to ste\rard our campus buildings and spaces for the lext gcneration as seen in our plans for campus renerval-but also to ensurc that all ofour property contiDues to best serve our acadeuric aDd residential comnruDity. As a r'neans of funding this anlbitious pla[ (u'hich is expecled to cost at least $365 nillion). the Board ofTrustees and senior leadership of Wellesley College have been exploring options for College-owned propedies that are outside the core canpus. that are cunently not being used for academic or residential purposes. and that are unlikely to fulfill any specitic campus needs going forward. We call these "fringe properties.' I would like to irlvite you to meet with College representatives ol1 Tuesday. May 6 at 7:30 p.tn at the Wellesley College CIub to hear about and to discuss our current thinking about College- owned land that fits this description. Commonly referred to as the Nofih 40 and located at the intersection ofRoutc 135 and Weston Road. this propeny has long proven unfeasible for academic or related uses. Though we have explored options for this parcel in the past. we have thus far been restricted by the deed thal donated thc land to the College in 1873. However. Wellesley College has recently filed a pctition with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) seeking to remove thc rest ctiolls set forth in that deed in order to allow lbr outside development on the property- \\hich would significantly open up our options to sell or of'f'er a long-term ground lcase on the land. By sellilg this property or committing to a long-term ground lease. Wellesley will gain additional financial resources to support our canpus renewal plan. lvhich includes renovation and maintenance elfons as well as modesl additions on a lew existing buildings. 1'he productive re-use ofthe North 40. as well as other fringe properties. will enable us to focus our assets in the areas we can best utilize them. Should the SJC grant our request. wellesley College is committed to conducting a process that is respectf'ul ofour surounding community and acknowledges any potential concems that the town and its residents may have.   • While we have no plans for development at this time, we have already held initial discussionswith Wellesley town officials around this matter, which have been positively received, andwould like to extend that opportunity to our alumnae community as well
