WOW –Wellbeing out of Waste a CSR Initiative of ITC Limited.
The Main Objectives of the program:
1. Create sustainable livelihoods for waste collectors/rag pickers. 2. Inculcate the habit of source segregation among the citizens. 3. Recover the dry recyclable waste which is going in to landfill. 4. Make India clean and green and create Swachh Bharath – Swachh Telangana.
Modus Operandi
1. Signing of MOU between ITC’s authorised NGO and ULB. 2. Allotment of Dry Resource Collection Centres (DRCC) in heart of the Town by ULB
and DRCCs are managed by ITC’s NGO. 3. Necessary infrastructure will be created to receive, weigh, handle, sort and store dry
recyclable waste at DRCC. 4. Recruit Propagation team and operations team by ITC‘s NGO. 5. Training to propagation team and waste collectors by ITC. 6. Propagation among Households about Source Segregation Propagation team. 7. Distribution of bags and IEC material by Propagation team 8. Provide PPE (gloves, masks, etc.) to the Waste collectors.
9. Waste collectors collect dry recyclable waste separately from households once in a week by using tricycles/Tractors and bring dry recyclable waste to the DRCC and sell at market rates to the NGO. And also they will perpetually educate Households on source segregation and Municipality will ensure strict compliance and impose penalty on non-abiding households.
10. The dry recyclables will be transported by Municipality using their tractors from small storage points to DRCC.
11. The dry recyclables like paper, plastic, metal and glass will be further processed and arrange for recycling by the NGO.
12. The disposal of Muck/inerts material will be the responsibility of the municipality once in a week from the DRCCs and Small storage points.
WOW CSR in Telangana
On the Advice of CDMA, ITC taken up Seven Municipalities in Telangana state Siddipet,
Gajwel, Sircilla, Vemulawada, Mahbubnagar, Sangareddy and Warangal.
Methodology:
Propagation: Door to door propagation by Resource persons (RP), explain about the
concept of source segregation of waste in to wet and dry. Rps will demonstrate and explain
about the impact of source segregation and its benefits, at the end handover flyer and bag
which is meant for source segregation . RPs will paste the sticker to the door and also collect
the profile of the household.
Two times follow up will be done and ensure the house hold practice source segregation.
Deployed 77 Community Resource Persons from Mepma, Imparted three level training
program to them:
1stlevel: Selection of Resource persons and given Orientation on WOW
2nd Level: Detail training on WOW through ILM and Role Plays and group discussions. They
have to practice source segregation and bring the dry recyclables to the next training
session.
3rd Level: Resource persons are asked to speak on the WOW and share their experiences
on practice of source segregation, Drawing of Action plan and allotment of wards and
households.
Training to Waste Collectors: The waste collectors are trained on the following:
Wet and dry waste collection separately.
Bring dry waste to the DRCCs and sell them at better prices.
How to communicate to the households on source segregation.
Value addition by further segregating the dry waste in to different high value grades
like carton boxes, mixed paper, pet bottles, milk packets, oil packets, white plastic,
black plastic etc., thereby they get the additional income of Rs. 150 to 300/- per day
apart from their salary.
Fund management and proper use of the additional income like spending on the
Children education and savings etc.
Training to Self Help Groups/ Women Entrepreneurs on DRCC management:
As part of involving and giving the ownership of the program to the community, the DRCCs
are managed by engaging the SHGs or women entrepreneurs. The following training is
imparted:
Management of DRCCs training like Buying, sorting, baling, loading, transportation
and selling the dry resource like paper, plastic, metal, glass and other recyclables.
Deployment of manpower for handling and processing of waste.
They are also trained on book keeping, Stock maintenance, fund management,
Working capital management, Costing and Preparation of P&L.
Health Safety and Environment
They will be equipped to manage the DRCC on sustainable model.

Gajwel: 12000 Households, 1500 Commercial Establishments, 10 Schools.
Sircilla: 28000 Households, 2500 Commercial Establishments, 25 Schools
Vemulawada: 10000 Households, 500 commercial establishments.
Mahbubnagar: 35000 Households, 1500 commercial establishments, 10 Schools and
propagation is still going on.

Makes available of raw materials like waste paper, plastics, metal and glass to the respective industries at competitive prices.
Helps Zero waste management and Dump yard can be converted in to Resource park.
Wet waste is free from recyclables and can easily be converted in to vermi compost which can be given to the farmers at less price than chemical fertilizers. Farmers will get benefitted with high yields and improves land fertility.
Municipalities able to handle waste properly.
Better hygiene and sanitation.
Clean and green towns.
