Leonardo DaVinci Continued-Leonardo was trained in the studio of a great Florentine painter named Verrocchio. He began working there at age 14.-He was trained in several artistic methods as well as metal working, sculpture, chemistry, and other disciplines.-The painting below is titled "The Last Supper" 1498.
Raphael Sanzio March 28, 1483 – April 6, 1520 -Raphael was an Italion painter and architect during therenaisance period. -The artist Michaelangelo was his biggest rival. The painting on the right is titled "Saint George and the Dragon." 1506.

He ran a workshop with many assistantsand produced a lot of work -Some of the best examples of his paintings can be found in theVatican in the Apostolic Palace.These frescos were the largestwork of his career. Vincent Van Gogh 30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890 -Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter and some of his works are amongthe most well known in the world. -Van Gogh did not pursue a career as a full time artistuntil the last 10 years of his life. The painting on the right is "Self Portrait" from 1887
Vincent Van Gogh Continued-Van Gogh sufferedfrom some sort of mental illness and spent much of his later years in a mental hospital. -Van Gogh was very poorand got by on money thathis brother Theo sent tohim on a regular basis. -Van Gogh killed himself "Cornfield with Cypresses" 1889with a gunshot to the chest.
Paul Gauguin 7, June 1848 - 8, May 1903 Guauguin was a French Post-Impressionist. He worked with boldcolors and focused on expressing the meaning of the subjects in his paintings. He lived in Peru for a time as a childand this influenced his painting style.He was obsessed with symbolism and was inspired by African and Asian art styles. "Woman with a Flower" 1891
Paul Gauguin cont.-Gauguin is credited as thecreator of the art movementcalled primitivism. Themovement can be identifiedby the use of exagerated bodyproportions, sharp geometric lines, animal symbolism and so on. -Painting drove Gauguin and hisfamily apart. He gave up his career as a businessmen to paint -Gauguin died at the age of 54 while in Polynesia. "The Yellow Christ" 1889
Pablo Picasso25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973 -Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor and is one of the mostrecognized artists of the 20th century. -Picasso was classically trained by his father and then at the Royal Academy in Madrid at the age of 16. -Picasso's early works were quiterealistic and masterfully painted. -Picasso worked in a greatnumber of different artisticstyes during his life. -He is credited as one of the founders of the cubist art movement. -He is also credited with turning paper collage into a fine art form. -Picasso died in 1973 while "Girl Before a Mirror" 1932entertaining guests at age 92.
Franz MarcFebruary 8, 1880 - March 4, 1916 -Marc was a German expressionistpainter and a member of the German "Blue Rider Group." - Marc was influenced by Cubismand Futurism and his later workbecame stark and abstract. -Marc's favorite subject matter was animals. He paintedthem using bold primary colors. "Blue Horse I" 1911
Franz Marc Cont. -This painting shows the influence of futurism and cubism on Marc's work. -Marc was enlisted by theGerman government to fightin World War I. The government sent a message tohave him relieved of duty because of his value as an artist. He died from a shell blast at the age of 36 beforethe message arrived. "The Bewitched Mill" 1911

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn July 15, 1606 – October 4, 1669 -Rembrandt was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He is widelyconsidered to be the greatestof the European painters. -He worked during what is called the Dutch Golden Age. -Rembrandt's early career was spent as a portrait artist. Rembrandt Cont-Rembrandt taught all of themost important Dutch paintersfor 20 years of his life -He painted many biblical stories and spent a lot of time observing the features Dutch Jews and reading biblical versesHis renderings of the Bible stories are incredibly lifelike. -Rembrandt died at the age of 63 and he outlived 2 of his 3 "Christ in the Storm onchildren. Paul Cézanne19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906 -Cezanne was a French Post-Impressionist and his work helpedto open up the world for new moreradical styles of art in the 20th century. He is like a bridge betweenImpressionism and Cubism. -Picasso and Matisse are both quoted as saying that Cezanne"is the father of us all" "The House with Burst Walls"-Cezanne is known for intensely 1892-1894studying his subject matter.

-Cezanne used very small specific brush strokes to build up layers of color that emulate what we actually see in nature while still having an abstract quality. -He died of pneumonia at age 47. "The Mount Sainte-Victorie" 1882-1885
Georges Seurat2 December 1859 – 29 March 1891 -Seurat was a French impressionistpainter and his work ushered in theneo-impressionist movement. -He was born into wealth and trained by a French sculptor namedJustin Lequiene. He also served ayear in the French military. -He worked with independent painters in France after being rejected by the formal French "Salon". "The Circus" 1891
Seurat Continued-Seurat's painting style focused on combining science and art. He used small dots of color placed side by side to create color mixing rather than blending paint on the canvas. He died at age 31. "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." 1884-1886
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564 -Michelangelo was an Italianpainter, scuptor, poet, and engineer, and architect. -He produced a massive amountof work and more of his workremains than any other 16th century artist. "Pieta" 1499 age 24-DaVinci was his biggest rival.

Michelangelo cont.-Michelangelo designed "St. Peter's Basilica" Designed in 1546the dome for the dome ofSt. Peter's Basilica in Rome but it was not completed before his death. -He is the first Western artist to have a biography ofhis life written while he was still alive. -Michelangaelo's work had an awe inspiring quality about it that influenced his fellow artists and ushered in the art movement calledManerism. He died in 1564 at the age of 88.
