Our excellent SQA examination results over the last three years, with continual improvement year on year in all key performance areas, demonstrates that we are getting things right as we strive for continual improvements. Our pupils are working incredibly hard and I believe that they appreciate success does not come easily – hard graft and persistence is needed. The pupils continue to amaze me with their efforts and I congratulate them on their past successes and hopefully of more to come. Schools now have access to a new programme called ‘Insight’ in which we can analyse data for improvement – a simple screen shot below.

An important point to also note above is that both our lower 20% pupils and the middle 60% pupils are significantly outperforming our virtual comparator, as well as Renfrewshire and National comparators. When you match that with the consistency of our top 20%, also outperforming our virtual comparator and others, then you will appreciate that our pupils are achieving at ALL levels.

My prediction for our current Senior Phase pupils, S4-S6, is an improvement again – although we must be getting very close to a ‘ceiling’! I am confident that the staff expertise, hard work and efforts, matched with our tracking system and parental support, will put us in a very good position to see our pupils maximise their true potential. A glimpse into our Tracking System: After another excellent performance by our pupils in the SQA exams, we began session 2014/15 on a high. One of our first tasks of the new session is to assign S5 pupils to Tracking Groups, based on their performance in exams and course choices. This is now our third year of running Tracking Groups, an initiative geared towards supporting all S5 pupils in what is arguably their most difficult year at school. Each Tracking Group will consists of between 6 and 10 pupils, and will be led by a Tracking Tutor – members of the Pupil Support and Senior Management teams, as well as volunteer staff members from across a range of faculties. These groups will meet three times during the course of the session, although individual meetings will also be arranged to suit pupils’ needs. The meetings will take place around whole school reporting periods, and offer pupils the chance to reflect on their performance, seek advice with regards to additional support available and set short and long term targets. Pupils will be given a wide range of study tips and techniques to support them, including a detail list of approaches recommended by staff and former pupils. S4 tracking meetings will also run, although in a slightly different way, through Personal Development Award classes, again enabling pupils to discuss their progress, access support and set targets.

You will notice that we are outperforming our Virtual Comparator and as such confirms that most of our pupils are performing to a very high standard. As would be expected there are still individual cases that we should consider how to track and support to better effect.

This is a token system to reward pupils for in class and extracurricular achievements and an achievements nomination form, to be completed by staff or parents in order to recognise pupils for wider, personal achievements. Both systems are closely tied into the House system, with House points being awarded for tokens and nominations. We are confident that this will raise the profile of wider achievements within the school, and enable pupils to gain the recognition they deserve. Crest Award Certificates CREST is a UK award scheme recognising success, building skills and demonstrating personal achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) project work. Our picture shows just a few of the 102 pupils who completed their CREST Bronze Award at the end of their term in S2. They are seen here being presented with their certificates. This was an interdepartmental project in collaboration with the Computing Department and organised by Dr. Scott in Chemistry. The pupils carried out research, experimental work and collation of data on a factual poster and their chosen theme was microbes. They individually completed their profiles to gain their award. The quality of the posters was outstanding. Very Well Done!

In terms of extra support available, pupils will continue to have access to study support in all their subjects – either through regular after school support or lunchtime support in the run up to NABs/Unit Assessments. In addition to this we have identified and trained a number of S6 Models of Excellence, who will work with pupils in the Hub (our pupils study/resource area, which is well stocked with past papers and grade booster books) before and after school, as well as some lunchtimes. These S6 pupils will impart valuable advice as to which revision techniques worked best in particular subjects and how best to reinforce classroom learning. Our Early Intervention exercise is in the process of being completed for S4/S5/S6 pupils, giving us valuable information about any pupils who are experiencing difficulty. This will allow us to take early action, in the form of pastoral interviews or parental letters, and ensure pupils are correctly coursed and working to the best of their ability. Pupils identified as significantly struggling will be offered regular one-to-one meetings with Pupil Support staff/SMT, and this will continue throughout the session, with analysis undertaken at each reporting period to ensure all pupils receive the support required. As in previous years, our new S1 pupils were CAT tested in May, and the results of these tests enabled us to create wholly mixed ability classes. Detail of preferred learning styles and potential for achievement further up the school was passed to all staff, and this detail is used to ensure pupils in S1 – S3 are working to their full potential, through rigorous tracking and monitoring at each reporting period. Any inconsistencies will be investigated, and appropriate support given, be it ‘catch up work’ for pupils with extended absences, or extension work to reinforce areas of particular difficulty. In terms of achievement, the Achievements Committee spent a lot of time putting together plans for our new Recognising and Celebrating Achievements initiative, as highlighted on the front page.

History Trip to Bannockburn The history department recently took us on a trip to the Bannockburn Centre where the actual battle took place in 1314. We learned about weapons and armour and it was really interesting as we were actually able to touch the heavy armour and put it on. They also dressed us as three different types of soldier, a knight, a poor soldier (farmer) and an archer. We got the opportunity to stand where Robert the Bruce and his army stood on the day of the battle. We also completed a formation that they would have completed. We could see the Stirling Bridge in the distance. After lunch, we went to the exhibition where we watched a 3D animation of what the men did at their campsites. This was my favourite part. This included their jobs and how they used their weapons. We were then divided into 2 teams, Scotland and England. We made team decisions on placing our army parts. England won! Erin Livingstone S4 I have been to Bannockburn before but the building has been completely refurbished since then to include an active battlefield and 3D battle. This is of great benefit to us making the battle easier to visualise. I really enjoyed the visit, in particular the chance to try on chainmail and helmets and have a closer look at weapons. Jamie Muir S4 I particularly enjoyed the 3D experience and the interaction with the characters of the time, learning a bit more about their individual roles. It connected to the school coursework very well. Erin Campbell S4 I enjoyed trying out the replica armoury. This will help me remember the specific use and need for each of the parts. I also enjoyed re-enacting the battle itself and learning about the skills required in placing your army carefully. Rachel Loose S4

Higher Geography enjoyed a field trip today to Hareshawmuir Water to learn about river and soil analysis techniques from research personnel from the University of St Andrews. ‘This was an enjoyable trip as we learned in a practical way where we were constantly involved in doing things. The day was split up into three sections – rocks, soils and rivers. Much of this required us to be in the river measuring different features, it was difficult at first because we were all inexperienced. However, the research personnel involved with the Goeobus helped us to quickly get the hang of things.’ Kaitlin McGuigan 6W

Young Enterprise 2014/2015 This year’s Young Enterprise team has 13 pupils which make up a brand new company

called OPPARTUNITY, led by Managing Director Kadey Adams. They are hoping to sell art work and photographs from young artists from Gryffe High and the associated primaries. The team came up with the idea of an Aye/Naw sale on Thursday 18 September (Scottish Referendum Day) putting Irn Bru against Cadbury. As everything sold out the outcome was a draw, netting the company with £88.37 toward the initial capital they require to provide initial funds. The company are hoping to sell the young artists work at a number of Christmas Fairs including the Gryffe PTA Fair on Thursday 27 November 2014 and of course at the Young Enterprise Finals on Thursday 4 December 2014 in SOAR Braehead. The team is supported by Mrs MacDonald, Mrs Dunlop and overseen by Miss Inglis. Article and Photographs – Mrs D MacDonald

Final Expedition! Several S4 pupils have been busy completing their Bronze Award. This is Lara’s account of her experience. On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 September, I completed my Duke of Edinburgh final expedition with a pass on the first attempt. This was an achievement not just for me but for all the members of my team as although the hike was enjoyable, it was also difficult. We walked 17 kilometres on day 1 and we walked 12 kilometres on day 2. I thought day 2 was more difficult as it was uphill for a good amount of the walk. There was lots of teamwork involved to get to the finish line but it was definitely worth doing and I am very glad I participated in the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. World Challenge

– Tanzania June 2015

On Saturday 12 September, the Gryffe High School World Challenge teams embarked on a training expedition to West Linton, 16 miles

south of Edinburgh. Both teams met at the school for an early start at 8:00am where they split up and travelled to the expedition. When they arrived they were issued with their World Challenge kit that they will be keeping with them until they go out to Tanzania in June 2015. Once the teams had met their leaders and set up their tents, they were both issued with a map and one member of each team was given the role of the leader. They had to lead the team safely through their walk for that day. During the walks the teams were faced with scenarios and tasks they had to complete together effectively. During lunch breaks and snack stops over both days, the leaders told the teams about their personal experiences with World Challenge. Team 2’s leader Tom has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro twice! At night and in the morning the team had to try and cook their dinner and breakfast on trangias which proved to be a new experience to both teams but was attempted with great enthusiasm. Both teams seemed to become closer and thoroughly enjoyed their weekend away, learning loads about what Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro will be like and are now keener than ever to get together and fundraise. On the Friday before the training expedition, Team 2 had a whole team fundraiser. They held a race night in St. Conval's club in Linwood. The night was something the team had been working towards for many weeks and with the combined team effort they managed to successfully raise approximately £1500! An amazing amount. A good night was had by all, each person enjoying the thrill of watching their snail slither their way to the finish line. Both teams going away to Tanzania appreciate your support and help with their fundraising and are working really hard to reach the target required to go away. The Skiff is making steady progress, thanks to a group of dedicated pupils who attend on Wednesdays after school, and of course the expertise of our own Mr Webster. Recently we have been working on extending and completing the ribs of the boat, outer planking is now underway, and also the oars have been marked out for manufacture. The oars will have to be planed to shape by hand from solid lengths of timber. There is still lots of work to be done and anyone interested in participating should ask at the Technical department for details. Photographs – Rebecca Kubski S2 and Beth Mackinnon S2

Gryffestyles Week - Monday 22 to Thursday 25 September

A whole school event promoting Health Awareness

September has traditionally been the month in Gryffe where the focus of many lessons is on Health and Healthy Eating. Many departments contribute in a variety of ways to encourage pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle of good diet and exercise. Our photographs only show a very small sample of the good work that is going on across all departments. Science are currently delivering ‘Science in the Hospital’ and you can see the look of delight of the pupils who are taking part in Heart Dissections and the importance of a low sugar diet. The Modern Languages department organised a European Day of Languages event with a healthy lifestyle theme including Salsa dancing! – look out for this in our November edition. The week started with the S1 Health Day which was a full programme of events – see special feature on Crafty Critters and Sports Activities The programme involves a considerable input across the whole curriculum and reflects our commitment to health promotion. The finale to the week is the traditional 3K fun run. Mr. O’Hare who is Faculty Head of Health and Wellbeing coordinates the whole event with a lot of help from staff and Sports Leaders………..and of course Spiderman! This is a much anticipated event in the calendar of Gryffe and many pupils put a lot of energy into preparing their costumes as well as for the run itself. 2014 was no exception to the effort involved. ALL year groups, including Primary Schools participate in great numbers. Entry to the fun run is a £1 donation and this year the chosen charity is ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’. Special guests this year included the new St Mirren manager Tommy Craig and former pupil Steven Thompson who is a St Mirren striker.

Gryffestyles Week - Crafty Critters

Dr Mhairi Stewart from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology came to the school on Monday 22nd September to introduce ‘Crafty Critters’ to S1 and teach them about various parasites and bacteria. Mhairi studies the malaria parasite and was able to show us some slides and pictures from her own work in the University of Glasgow. The pupils impressed Mhairi with their knowledge of parasites and they learned lots of interesting facts including how many bacteria are in a drop of water. Pupils were provided with materials and asked to ask create their own “Crafty Critter”. They all thoroughly enjoyed this activity and with a little help from staff and S6 pupils, we even had some S1 expert needle-threaders by the end of the morning! The finished ‘critters’ will be displayed in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow University from Friday 10 October and then afterwards, they will head off on a journey to teach communities around the world about parasites and parasitic disease. If you want to make your own critter, go to: http://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/iii/wtcmp/publicengagement/craftycritters/ (50,000,000 in case you are interested!)
