n Celebrating its 135th year, Burpee is still the seed king. Its catalog-cover crop is the aptly named Kings of Color tomato collection, with red, pink, orange and yellow tomatoes all in the same pack. It’s a chef’s fantasy, the perfect variety for a mixed-tomato plate. And Burpee boasts that the tomatoes weigh in at a pound apiece.nSpecializing in organic seeds and plants,

Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (www.groworganic.com) boasts bushels of rainbow-hued potatoes, 158 varieties of bare-root fruit trees and 14 kinds of blueberries. I wish I had room for an orchard. The Bella Gold Peaco-

tum – a peach-plum-apricot cross I had never heard of – looked especially mouthwatering.nSpeaking of blueberries (or should I say

pinkberries?), Stark Brothers (www.starkbros.com) features the Pink Lemonade blueberry, an ornamental shrub with bright pink blueber-

ries that taste like their blue cousins but look far different. It’s the kind of fruit bush that can slip into the front yard flowerbeds and make itself at home. (Its flowers are pink, too.)nMarking its 200th anniversary, Comstock

Seeds (www.rareseeds.com) offers a dazzling array of heirloom vegetables and flowers with illustrations that stress each seed’s old-timey roots. Such names as Black Valentine, Lazy Wife and Contender (all green beans) stir nos-talgia and curiosity. Among the melons are Pineapple (a favorite in Thomas Jefferson’s garden) and the outrageously small Queen Anne’s Pocket Melon, a orange-and- yellow-striped beauty that’s ripe at only 2 to 3 inches long. (Unfortunately, they don’t taste so great, but aren’t they pretty?)

With Valentine’s Day approach-ing I want to tell you about one of my true loves. Besides

my kids, dad and boyfriend, this newspa-per has been courting me for the past 30 years. I’m not “breaking up” with the pa-per — although I have moved out on my own.

Even though my last day at the paper was Friday, I’m fortunate our publisher has agreed to allow me to continue writ-ing for WelcomeHome, as he understands the passion I have for this real estate magazine I helped launch five years ago.

A big part of the reason we have held our ground, even through rocky real es-tate times, is because of our advertisers, who have believed in what this product has to offer, and have continued to be a part of our success. Even though I may be “officially” leaving the office of the news-paper, I’m happy I will still be interacting with these Realtors who have been the backbone of WelcomeHome.

Along with advertisers, our success can

only happen because of those of you who turn to WelcomeHome for information on buying and selling homes. Thank you for making our job so much easier and for continuing to read our magazine.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, check out the 3-D card you can create on page 5. Homemade gifts of love aren’t exclusively for children to make, as adults appreciate the time and effort, probably even more so than just purchasing a pre-printed card. If you don’t have the resources to make a card, or don’t want to fight the cold weather to buy one, give your loved ones a call on Valentine’s Day, just to tell them how much they mean to you. That’s worth its weight in gold!

Still on the theme of love, home interior expert Mary Garrity expresses her fond-ness for the color blue in her column this week on page 7. I can honestly say I have never had much blue in my décor but I can see where it can add a touch of soft-ness in the midst of earth tone colors.

This week’s feature story is on Meadow-

brook Estates in Independence. Hosting an open house on Saturday, Feb. 19, Real-tor Michael Bailey is excited to introduce three homeowners who will open their homes for public viewing. This speaks volumes for the Builder and Realtor and the homeowners’ trust and belief in what they offer. Check it out on pages 8 and 9.

It’s seed catalog time and what better time to dream about what to plant in the spring than when we’re staring at several feet of snow. Even if you’ve never planted a garden, take the time to check out the huge selection of seeds our soil in the Midwest can nurture into thriving plants for fresh produce. Gardening is one of those things in life that is like the old say-ing of “try it, you might like it,” as the dirt and sweat it takes to plant is always worth the harvest.

Thanks for stopping by,

Sandy Turner

This year there is no man in my life — and suddenly I am loving Valentine’s Day. I’m making valentine cards for

each of my family members and a few close friends as well. Turns out, it’s great fun to have a special day to remind friends and family of how much I love them.

My valentine is a card (consisting of three separate layers) that becomes three-dimen-sional when assembled. I call it a heart-y diora-ma because the first layer has a large window cut out that allows viewing the second and third layers, much like a diorama. The key is to stagger the length of each layer, making sure that the third (and longest) layer will fit into the envelope.

The largest, standard-sized envelope that I can mail, without extra postage, is 6 by 9 inch-es, so my third layer is just a fraction smaller and is decorated with XX’s and OO’s. The middle layer is a 1-1/2 by 7-3/4-inch strip with hearts glued to the top edge. The front layer is 6 by 7 inches with a large window cut out of the middle, and is decorated with valentine-themed embellishments. All three layers have small, matching holes punched in the corners

and the back of the last layer contains my heartfelt message.

Assembly is easy: align all of the layers on the left side and fasten them together with small, colored brads. Attach two brads to the right side of the front cover so that the card re-mains flat for mailing. When your card arrives, your loved one need only open the prongs of the brads on the right side and poke them through the second and third layers to create

the arc that makes the card three-dimension-al.

Once I stopped worrying about how much love to share, I discovered that Valentine’s Day afforded the perfect opportunity to connect in a loving way with my family and friends. Who knew it would be so simple?

of the week!

Up until a few years ago, my heart be-longed to green. And while green and I are still the best of friends, I am now

head over heels in love with blue and celebrate this amazing color daily by using a liberal amount of blue in my decorating. If you would like to sing the blues with me this winter, here are some ideas for working this wonderful col-or into your decor.

I adore blue walls, because blue typically looks terrific with just about anything. When I was developing my custom line of interior wall paint, I wanted to come up with a shade of blue that reminded me of my mother-in-law, Mimi, who was also a big fan of blue. Mimi brought a bolt of light blue fabric with her from Ireland that she used to make all sorts of things for her home. Dan and I dubbed the shade “Mimi Blue,” and it is very similar to Front Porch, a

wonderful light blue in my Mary Carol Artisan Paints line.

If you don’t want to paint a room blue, why not just a ceiling? When Dan and I renovated our historic fixer-upper, I painted the kitchen Garrity Cream, a warm, buttery off-white. But I couldn’t stand to not have some color in the space, so I covered the ceiling in Front Porch. Similarly, I painted the ceiling of my screened porch Amelia Blue, a punchy shade that’s also in my paint line. Having blue ceilings makes me feel I’m under sunny skies all year long.

If you are crafty, there is no end to what you can do with a can of blue paint. Why not give a dated piece of furniture a new lease on life by painting it a hip shade of blue? Scout around in your basement, at estate sales or at flea markets for great old pieces that need some TLC, like frames, bookcases or chairs, then zip

I’m head over heels for blue

them up with your favorite tone of turquoise, robin’s-egg or periwinkle.

The girls who work with me in the fabric room at Nell Hill’s Briarcliff like to tease that every one of the blue fabrics we get in is my fa-vorite. They’re right! But how can you choose just one, when you know that just a few yards of blue fabric, whether it’s a playful floral or a sophisticated damask, can do so much to el-evate the design of a home?

For instance, right now I’m upholstering lots of furniture in dark blue because this rich color is wonderfully dramatic yet versatile enough to act as a neutral.

Meanwhile, we’re selling tons of accent pil-lows in a bold blue ikat pattern. This ancient pattern that’s super hot right now looks won-derful on contemporary sofas and chairs. Or, use blue toile, floral and paisley fabrics to give

your pieces a more romantic, classic feel. Or, do things the Nell Hill’s way — assemble a mix of modern and traditional fabrics in a range of blues.

If you’re thinking about remaking your bed-ding ensemble this spring, consider going with a blue-and-white color palette. You can’t go wrong with this timeless combination, which looks great in all seasons.

And then there are blue dishes. I use my blue-and-white transferware year-round, re-making its look every season by adding ap-propriate touches. For instance, in spring, I like to pair my transferware with apple-green ac-cents. In the fall, I often mix it with orange.

While only one room in my home is painted blue, you’ll find pops of blue throughout my entire house, thanks to a wide array of blue ac-cents I like to mix in and around.

With spring just around the corner, Meadowbrook Estates in Inde-pendence, is bustling with activity

as future homeowners begin the exciting pro-cess of building their dream home.

Three current homeowners in Meadow-brook have agreed to open their homes to the public to showcase three different floor plans McBee Custom Homes offers in a special open house on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“What better testimony to McBee’s cus-tomer satisfaction in building their homes than to have three homeowners agree to open their homes for others to see,” Michael Bailey, of Bailey Home Team from Reece and Nichols said. “It speaks volumes for their trust and re-

spect of McBee Custom Homes.”The McBee standard features put into every

home built revolves around providing the ho-meowner with not only elegance and quality but also an energy saving environment.

“The 5-star caulk and foam package lowers the air exchange rate inside the home, which essen-tially reduces the loss of heat or air conditioning by half,” Bailey said. “This isn’t an upgrade charge with McBee, this is their way of building.”

Homes are also equipped with an electric 14 Seer Heat Pump and a 92 percent efficient Goodman gas furnace. The foundation walls are built a foot higher than the normal eight

feet to allow for easy access if homeowners decide to have a finished basement.

“I believe so much in what McBee has to offer, my wife and I are in the process of hav-

ing our home built here in Meadowbrook,” Bailey said. “The product, price and quality of McBee homes are unbeatable. The value in these homes can do nothing but go up.”

All of the homes built by McBee earn a five-star energy rating on the Home Energy Rating

System. McBee, who was recognized in 2010 for building the first certified green home in In-dependence, has taken the leading edge in re-ducing carbon footprints in the environment.

Meadowbrook Estates

Residents open their homes to the public“With both of us working out-side of the home and having to

sell our current home, it was a relief to work with a highly

knowledgeable and profes-sional company that prides

itself in removing the “home build burdens” from their

customers. We made several changes to our floor plan and

throughout the process McBee listened and made suggestions to ensure our satisfaction. The

home we have today is what we dreamed of and more! From

the craftsmanship to the ser-vice you provided we could not

be happier.”

“The homes built in Meadowbrook are all made with energy efficiency at the forefront,” Bailey said. “Although to be a certified green build, it does tack on an additional cost to the homeowner.”

The floor plans all include hardwood floor-ing, granite countertops, Knotty Alder custom cabinets, wood and stone accented fireplace, stamped driveway border, sidewalk and front porch with stucco and stone curb appeal on the exterior.

Meadowbrook, located east of Little Blue Parkway on R.D. Mize, provides easy access to the Independence Commons Area, I-70 for a quick commute, Centerpoint Medical Center and plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment.

“We are within walking distance of the Little Blue Walking Trail,” Bailey said. “And minutes from Blue Springs Lake, shopping, golf cours-es and schools.”

Although located within the Independence city limits, Meadowbrook is in the Blue Springs School district.

The three floor plans being showcased, in addition to the model, on Feb. 19 will include the Wentworth, a California Split, the Cam-bridge, a two-story, and the Gallatin, which is a story-and-a-half.

“The tour begins with our model home at 21513 E 32nd Terrace,” a duplicate of the 2010 Grand Award Winner, “where we will provide refreshments as well as detailed information about the McBee standard way of building.”

“My wife and i had Steve McBee build our home in 2004. We had quite a few

special requests that Steve accommodated for us and we

were absolutely impressed with the final product. How-

ever, it was how he took care of us after we moved in that was

really extraordinary. He was always on top of any issue that came up and had a contractor

out to fix it right away, many times within the same day.

We were very pleased and we wouldn’t even think of having

any other company build a home for our family. Thank you

very much Steve!” – JiM BedSWOrTH, Jr.

Phone rings: “Jim, can you suggest a good stove?” I’ve heard this so often. I can take a good guess at why: The call-

er’s oven over the years has changed. It has a much lower or higher real temperature than

what its dial reads. For less than $20, buy a digital oven ther-

mometer. Your oven should be within 5 de-grees of the temperature on the dial.

Aother way is to buy brown-and-serve rolls

and bake them at exactly the time and temp on the package. If they are over or under done, then adjust the time, and make note of it so you can account for the time difference later.

Once you know how far off your oven is, you can recalibrate it. Many ovens have a calibra-tion gauge under the temperature knob. Pry it off. This will make your oven warmer or cooler

at the stated temperature. Moving the arrow one notch usually is 10 degrees.

If your oven has an electronic control, check your manual for how to adjust it.

If all else fails, call an appliance repair per-son. Also, remember that electric ovens gen-erally are more accurate than gas ones.

Enjoying the beauty and soothing vibe of a houseplant is easy. Keeping it from drooping and dying takes a little more

work. Many people kill their houseplants with kindness — the greenery succumbs to over-saturated roots.

Such species as sansevierias need water only every two to three weeks. Others get by with weekly watering. The key is to feel the soil; water when it starts to feel dry. Ideally, put water in a

saucer under the pot and let it wick upward.• The ideal “soil” is actually soil-less potting

medium, a mix that stays moist but drains quickly. Don’t use garden soil — dirt won’t work. Instead, use a mix of perlite, peat moss, sphagnum moss, orchid bark and charcoal. Also, don’t put rocks or gravel at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage; that keeps the planting medium from drawing water up from the saucer.

• Choose the right size pot for the plant. When repotting, choose a container an inch or two larger in diameter than the previous container.

• Keep the plant clean. Dust it regularly and occasionally give it a shower. Place the plant in the bathtub and gently rinse off its leaves with tepid water. That allows the leaves to work and stay healthy.

• Plants need light to grow. Most house-plants thrive in bright indirect light, the kind found near an east-facing window. Under fluo-rescent light, plants do well with eight hours a day, such as in a typical office.

• Fertilize your houseplant once or twice a month.

• Some houseplants, particularly ferns and orchids, appreciate higher-than-normal hu-midity. Mist them occasionally with fresh wa-ter. Or make a humidity tray: Put gravel in a shallow dish. Fill the dish with water, keeping

the water level just below the top of the stones. Place the houseplant (saucer and all) on top of the gravel.

• Use an indoor fungicide to fight mildew. Pick off damaged leaves. For mealybugs (which look like white scales), tab them with alcohol on a cotton swab or treat with a sys-temic spray recommended for indoor use. Gnats, another problem, may be a sign of too much moisture in the soil.

• According to research, two to three large houseplants (in 10- to 12-inch containers) can clean the air in a 100- to 150-square-foot room, a typical bedroom or den. For maximum effect, place plants in your “breathing zone,” within 6 to 8 square feet of where you normally sit or lie. But remember: They need light to survive.

Keeping your indoor plants healthy and alive takes care
