Patient Visitation POLICY

We understand that it can be difficult to be away from your companion animal when he/she is hospitalized for care at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital and we want you to know that we support patient visitation. The following guidelines were created to facilitate patient visits while allowing us to provide optimal care to all Hospital patients. The guidelines will help you schedule a visit, but specific availability may vary based on your animal’s illness and the constraints of the attending service. Exceptions to this policy may be made on a case-by-case basis if necessary due to unexpected circumstances.

Hospital Overview:

• All visits must be scheduled with a doctor, technician, or student of the service that is providing the care for your animal. This ensures that a representative of the service will be available during your visit to address any questions or needs that may arise.

• Whenever possible, visits should be scheduled 24 hours in advance.

• Visits will be limited to one 1-hour visit per day (any day) or two 30-minute visits per day (weekdays only).

• You are not permitted to spend the night at the Hospital.

• When visiting, please check in at the front desk. You are not permitted to walk unattended through the hospital.

Large Animal Hospital:

• Visiting hours are between 12 PM and 7 PM weekdays and 10 AM and 4PM weekends, and must be arranged with the specific service.

• You must remain with your animal and/or your escort throughout the visit.

• Visits are not permitted for animals in the large animal isolation facility.

Small Animal Hospital:

• Visiting hours are between 9 AM and 6 PM (visit ending by 6 PM) weekdays and between 8 AM and 10 AM on weekends. You and a representative of the service caring for your pet will determine the specific time of your visit.

• If a patient is able to leave the ward for a visit, the visit will occur in an exam room.

• For patients with medical conditions that prevent them from leaving the ICU or IMC, visits are limited to 15 minutes, up to 3 times per day on weekdays and 15 minutes, up to 2 times per day on weekends. In such instances, you may be asked to wait for the nursing staff to finish their nursing duties prior to your visit. You must be accompanied by a representative of the service for the entire visit and you may be asked to leave on short notice if an emergency situation arises while you are in the ward.
