2020 SECONDARY 3 SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
Considerations for Offering Subject Combinations
A variety of subjects are offered to the students to cater to their different abilities, aptitudes, profiles and interests.
Aspiration for your child’s post-secondary education. Subjects allow students to offer H2 core subjects at JC level and a range of courses at Polytechnics and ITE.
The combinations to provide a holistic broad‐based education for your child.
25/02/2019
19
Important points to note: The availability of subjects is based on the
availability of teachers, manpower deployment and student’s interests.
Students are not allowed to take subjects not offered by the school on their own.
Syllabuses for all the subjects offered at the GCE O-Level and GCE N-Level may be obtained from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) website at https://www.seab.gov.sg.
Considerations for Choosing Subject Combinations
None of the combinations will really restrict the choices in the future. No single combination is better than the other. Everyone can excel in whichever combinations. We want EVERYONE to EXCEL!
Strengths of the child. Choose subjects that the child can excel so that they can enjoy their learning!
Aspiration for your child, NOT yours!Conversations and Exploration to find out more.

For certain subjects/combinations, students must meet the criteria set out by various departments in order to select the subjects/combinations

Higher Art
Recommendation by HOD Craft & TechnologyStudents not selected by the HOD Craft &
Technology but would like to take Higher Art will have to undergo a qualifying test.
Opting for Triple Sciences Must have a real interest in all the 3
Sciences Need to be coping well in all subjects
and be very strong in Sec 2 Science (at least 70%)
Combination for students who are most likely to pursue areas in science like engineering, biomedical sciences, medicine etc.
Not necessary for students to do Biology even if they intend to do medicine course in university
25/02/2019
22
Opting for Double Pure Sciences
Aptitude and interest in Science is key
Good combination for students who are relatively strong in Science but are not quite sure what they intend to pursue in future
Opting for Combined Science
Good for those who are not so interested in Science and who are more language oriented e.g. those who want to do Literature OR those who want to do Higher Art because Art is a coursework subject and will take up a lot of time
Good for those who are sure that they want to go on to JC or Polytechnics to pursue an area not related to Science

What happens if I find that I am not suitable for the course?
Most likely it is not the strengths of the child. A difficult situation as nobody wants to give
up after spending considerable time on the subjects.
Consider what is best for the child, they should excel and enjoy their learning!
What happens if I find that I am not suitable for the course?
Most common examples: Failed Additional Mathematics or Pure
Sciences throughout the year even after various interventions and support are given.
Consult respective HODs to see what are the options available. Further assessments may be given to assess
whether the child will be able to excel at a later stage.
Whether the child is clear about his aspirations and options ahead.
25/02/2019
24
What happens if I find that I am not suitable for the course?
In the event that the child is found not ready or it is not in the best interest of the child to persist in taking the subject, HOD will recommend dropping of the subject or take up other alternatives (eg Combined Science) provided that the child is properly counselled.
The final approval is subjected to Principal’s decision.
