Transition to Year 1

We aim to make the transition to

Year 1 from Reception as smooth as possible.

“Busy time” is replaced by “Let’s Learn” – a structured playing activity

As the year progresses Let’s Learn is gradually replaced by structured lessons.

Responsibility During Year 1 we try to encourage the children

to be more responsible by setting a good example to the younger Reception children.

They are encouraged to be independent by:• Looking after their own belongings• Getting changed quickly without help• Change reading books on their own, when

completed • Use clues such as visual timetables to help

them become independent learners• Put their belongings away quickly and settle

into morning activities

Phonics

• In year 1 the majority of children will be learning phase 5 Letters and Sounds. Some children will be catching up on phases 2 to 4 before they start phase 5.

• The children are divided into 3 ability groups across the year group.

Phonics

Rewards • Well Dones /Dojo – for good work, behaviour,

helpfulness, kindness to others.• Gold Card - (10 well dones) These can be spent

in the school “shop” or saved to “buy” an item of greater value when more have been accrued!!

• Class cup –individual award for going ‘above and beyond’ the Golden Rules & producing a ‘Wow’ moment

• Golden Time – ( 5o mins every Friday afternoon)• Excellent presentation certificate – Individual

award for 1 child per week for neat work and presentation.

Sanctions

Loss of Golden Time !• Verbal warning for bad behaviour• Repeated behaviour – Yellow card • Continued behaviour – Blue card• 1 Blue card = 15 minutes lost Golden Time• 2 Blue cards = 30 minutes lost Golden Time• 3 Blue cards = no Golden Time!

• All blue cardholders to Mrs Jones to explain what they have done wrong. Parents contacted.

Homework• Daily reading to an adult

• Weekly spellings (alternate between HFW and phonics words)

• Maths and English/Project (alternate weeks)

• Practise handwriting and digit formation on a regular basis

Holidays• Our school year is incredibly busy and your

child will miss a huge amount if taken out of school during term time. One week of holiday every year of primary school adds up to over half of a term of missed learning!

• We therefore ask that you avoid taking your child out of school for holidays during term time. We are unable to provide work for holiday absence, we also do not set homework over the school holidays.

• However if you wish, your child could write a diary of their time away which they can share at school, but we will be unable to mark it.

• Please be aware that government rules have changed regarding holidays in term time and you may be liable for a fine.

Learning Outside the Classroom

• Visit local Southbourne library • Walk around our local area• Sir Harold Hillier Gardens• Beach Trip – Summer Term

PSHE

• Jigsaw scheme• Bubble Time• Talk to ADULT

How you can help at home?

• Encourage independence and organisation• Daily Reading• Topic Research• Practical Mathematical activities• Writing activities (e.g. diary/story

writing/postcards)• Practise handwriting and forming letters

correctly. • Ensure your child has the correct things

packed for school e.g water bottle, reading book, P.E kit etc.

Reports

• The annual written reports for parents and carers are sent out in the Spring term.

• In addition, at the end of the school year you will receive a short report detailing your child’s levels and progress in reading, writing and maths
