Children are not allowed to bring toys to school as it is a

distraction to learning and often results in lost or broken toys.

All three classes will have P.E. on Fridays.The children will also be taking part in a daily mile as part of our 2 hours per week P.E. lessons.

If your child is unwell, then please keep them at home and ring

the school office. Allow 48 hours for sickness and tummy upsets.

Please inform us if your child needs to be taken out of school for a

medical appointment.

All children must be signed in and out of school during the day.

Your child will be expected to do P.E. unless you inform us

otherwise.

Online -safety is focused on at the beginning of every

term.

Online safety workshop, next Wednesday at 7pm.

Cyber bullying and social media.

On-line safety- know what your children are doing online.

ROUTINES

MORNINGS

The gates open at 8:40am

It’s really important that the children are in school on time as we do early morning work. If your

child is late then they will often miss out on introduction or revision work.

PLAYTIMES

Year 3 and 4 share playtimes together.

Your child may bring in a fruit or vegetable to snack on during break. No crackers, flapjacks or

cereal bars.

LUNCHTIME

This year, you are required to pay for a school lunch. If providing a packed lunch, please ensure you

provide healthy options. Please remember we are a nut free school.

Playtime equipment is often available for the children to play with.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

KS2 school day finishes at 3:15pm

We need to know who is picking your child up. If someone else is

picking them up, send in a note with your child in the morning.

Late pupils should be collected from the office where you will be

asked to sign the late book.

AFTERSCHOOL CLUBS

St Joseph’s offers a range of afterschool clubs

Assembly Dates

3K – Thursday 21st November at 9:05am

We will also hold a whole year group assembly during the Summer term.

RE topics to be covered this term are homes, promises and visitors.

WRITING

Expectations of handwriting – at the moment we are promoting a fluid cursive

style, with regular practice in the morning.

Presentation. All the children write in pencil, which encourages a neater

style.

Children should be reading daily

Children will change or renew their books as necessary and can change them as needed.

We would love for parent volunteers to help listen to children read once a week for about half an hour.

MATHS This year in Maths, we are continuing with our Maths for Mastery approach.

A lot more questioning

More reasoning and problem solving tasks

We will be using a lot more resources where appropriate, to support children in

their learning and deepen their understanding with a range of different concepts.

Please, where possible, support your child in their maths at home.

Children are encouraged to ask for help!

Some areas of learning in Year 3:

Understanding place value to 1000

A range of strategies for adding and subtracting, followed by

multiplication and division

Naming, describing and making 2D and 3D shapes

Using a range of measures accurately

Problem solving in most lessons

MATHS

The importance of times tables:

Starting from this year, all children across the country will be

required to know their times tables up to 12x 12, at the end of

Year 4.

This year group will be the second year group to do this.

Cornerstones

This year, we will be using Cornerstones to create fun and exciting projects to

focus on each half term.

The themes we have chosen this year include:

MUSIC and FRENCH.

MUSIC

We will be using the Charanga programme which is promoted by Surrey

Arts.

During Autumn, the focus is the songs that will be performed at St Joseph’s

Church as part of our nativity.

During Spring, the focus is the songs that will be performed at Dorking Halls.

FRENCH

Basic vocabulary such as numbers, days of the week, months of the year, food

names etc.

This will often be taught through song.

ASSESSMENT

Children need to be meeting a certain amount of objectives in order to be

meeting age related expectations (ARE) by the end of the academic year

They will be assessed against National Curriculum learning objectives for each

subject

Children’s progress is tracked and discussed with parents at Parents Evening

and reported at the end of the year through their school reports

Formative – AFL (questioning, checking understanding, thumbs up, etc.).

Marking policy and symbols used

Summative – tests and tasks for maths, reading, spelling, science.

Assessment results – reported to parents at parents evenings and in end of

year reports.

All children are working towards (w) at the beginning of the year as each year

group curriculum expectations are different.

TRIPS

Sainsbury’s – Tomorrow (Wednesday 18th September)

The children will be using produce from our Sainsbury’s trip to create

some exciting foods for you to taste on Thursday 19th September at

2:30 p.m.

Butser Farm – Friday 25th October

Please see the letter sent out via ParentMail last week.

If we don’t get enough parent helpers, the children will miss out on a

great opportunity.
