Catholic spiritual tradition is always challenged by many secular and non-Christian groups. Several so called spiritual movements were started aimed at offsetting Christian traditions and spiritual influences that have a lasting impact on the lives of believers. Many such movements confuse the young minds and dissuade them from adhering to the catholic beliefs and practices. Such movements have very attractive philosophies that are appealing to young minds. Their approach and conquest are in progressive steps.

First they will find intelligent and active kids from known families. Introduce them to well behaved and smart friends from their own peer group who have already accepted the movement and its beliefs. They create a friendship circle when no ideology will be introduced until the group is well knit. During this process of forming the group the new ideology will be introduced step by step which the kids will not resist.

The targeted kids already have a lurking dislike for their parents’ discipline or religious practices and affiliations. This accelerates their affinity with the new group. The second step is to widen this rift with parental discipline and the kid’s assertive independence. This is positively correlated with their deepening loyalty with the new group.

There are two consequences. Many a time average parents are unaware of what is happening to their child due to a blind belief that everything goes well because they meet every need and satisfy every desire of their child. Kids are so smart to play the game to keep their new ventures from parental scrutiny. Some parents become very rigid that will lead to disturbing family atmosphere and frequent parent-child conflicts at home, most often ends in unresolved alienations. The second effect is that some parents stay out of their child’s ways due to the fear that it will create conflict with them but grieve deep inside.

Many parents try to connect their affected children with priests and religious with the hope of getting some help which they could not provide. Many such personnel are not equipped to deal with these influences, professionally and amicably.

It used to be in colleges that such ideologies conquer young minds. Now this has moved to high schools and even middle school level. One such attractive influence is the New Age movement which has many nuances appealing to kids of different persuasions.

One major cause is that their Catholic Faith was shallow and superficial. Parents failed to provide convincing rational and promote a deep rooted devotion to and personal intimacy with Jesus as they were growing up. Faith has to be personalized. Impersonal practices will fly off when challenged. Every family needs devotions, prayers, and convincing dialogue with children that will promote a religion from the heart that will stand against all odds of life. God bless you all.

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CALLED BY GOD

Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the L to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were bap zed. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “des ned us for adop on” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
