At Tupton Hall School we offer a supportive and very successful Sixth Form for students from a wide variety of different schools. We care about students’ academic and personal development. And we are committed to providing a friendly and supportive Sixth Form for our students, in order that each student may achieve their potential.

We have developed strong links with universities, with partnerships developed with The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the universities of Birmingham and Nottingham. These links are exceptionally valuable to our students and as a result they receive mentoring, interview guidance, subject specific workshops and unconditional offers for undergraduate study and financial support in the form of bursaries.

Our close working relationships with universities has resulted in students securing places on competitive courses such as law and medicine. We have a large number of cohort being offered summer schools with the Russell Group of universities.

We strive to ensure that we support both the academic and personal development of our students here at Tupton Hall. In order to ensure that they have the facilities and opportunities to achieve their potential, our school remains open for Sixth Form students from 7.30am until 5pm on school days. This allows students to engage in private personal study. We also have a Pastoral Support Team for our students to access as we are fully aware that many will need to access additional support alongside their studies.

I hope you are able to make the most out of your visit to our Open Evening - tour our excellent facilities, speak to staff and meet current students. If you wish to visit us at an alternative time please contact the school to arrange this and we will be pleased to show you around.

WHICH SUBJECTS?Choosing to continue your studies after GCSEs is a big decision, and one that will open doors to future qualifications and employment. It is important to make the right decision about what you would like to study and where.

At Tupton Hall we have one of the largest selections of post-16 Advanced Courses in the Derbyshire area. Students have considerable freedom and flexibility to opt for a curriculum that suits their skills and aspirations.

We recommend that all students start by choosing four subjects to specialise in during their Sixth Form studies. When deciding on options for you should give serious consideration to the following:

• Choose courses you have previously enjoyed and succeeded in

• Certain careers require you to have studied specific subjects at A Level – so research these carefully

• The same goes for university courses. They will be happy to discuss their entrance policies with you as a potential candidate

• Seek advice from teachers, family and friends.

We offer a number of ‘new start’ qualifications such as Law, Travel and Tourism and many others which do not require you to have studied them before. You should look very carefully at these, as many students opt for a new subject and discover a passion and ability to excel in this new direction.

OPTION BLOCKSAll subjects are organised into an option block system allowing students to select to study a varied and exciting curriculum. It also provides the chance to specialise in a certain field if you have particular interests and talents.

We advise that all students select four A Level subjects to start Year 12 – each subject should come from a different option block. Opting for four subjects at AS Level gives students the opportunity to try new subjects and puts them in a strong position for progression into Year 13 and higher education.

In Year 13 most students will specialise in three A Level subjects. We ask that all students make a preliminary choice on their application form when they first apply, however, choices can be changed. Before making final subject choices all students should attend a taster day in July during which you can sample a selection of A Level courses.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Our standard entry policy for students wishing to begin A Level study is five GCSE grades at C or above – including English and Maths at Grade C or above.

Some subjects have extra requirements, so please speak to staff in each subject area to find out more.

SIXTH FORM SUPPORTWe are a very large Sixth Form, with one of the largest Post-16 student bodies in Derbyshire. We believe that this is a real asset, rather than a daunting prospect, as we have a large team of dedicated staff here to help.

At Tupton Hall Sixth Form your first port of call and main contact will be your Sixth Form Tutor who you will see every morning in registration and most afternoons.

More than just taking the register, your form tutor plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting you through your time in the Sixth Form, including:

• Monitoring your attendance• Monitoring you academic progress• Writing your pastoral report• Giving guidance on Higher Education, ..apprenticeships, CV writing, ..interviews and employment• Teaching Curriculum Enhancement and ..Learning for Life courses• Mentoring you if and when necessary

In addition to your form tutor there are several other key members of our pastoral team.

Mrs Burton is Head of Sixth Form and has strategic overview of matters relating to Post-16 delivery and provision.

Mr Leach is Deputy Head of Sixth Form and deals with day-to-day pastoral matters and oversees induction, higher education and employment pathways.

Miss Curtis is Post-16 Pastoral Support Coordinator and will be the person you see most after your Form Tutor, working from the Sixth Form office.

Mrs Betton works alongside Miss Curtis in the Pastoral Support Office. She offers support and guidance on a wide range of issues such as dealing with exam stress, coping with workload and can also see students confidentially regarding personal issues either by appointment or on a drop-in basis.

You can contact the pastoral team in person or via email: • [email protected][email protected][email protected][email protected]

Or on Twitter: • @tuptonsixthform • @Headofpost16THS • @DonJuanLeach • @miss_curtislu • @THSPost16SS

Very soon after starting in the Sixth Form some Year 12 students will be nominated to have a Year 13 peer mentor. If this is suggested it is a really great way of getting extra support with academic subjects from someone who studies them in the year above, and also benefiting from the experience of someone who was in your position a year ago.

As you move through Year 12 and into Year 13, career planning will form an increasingly important part of your time at Sixth Form. Whether you want to go to University, into an apprenticeship or employment - support and guidance is available from all members of the pastoral team.

Your Form Tutor will play a key role in this as they see you every day and are therefore the best person to be fully aware of your intentions for the future and what planning you have done to make it happen. You may need more time to work through a UCAS form, personal statement, CV or plan for an interview.

Support is in place throughout the year to support each student’s academic development.

Alongside the academic curriculum the Sixth Form offers a wide and varied enrichment programme.

It is really important for us that our students are able to involve themselves both in the whole school and within the local community.

Through these additional activities students often grow in confidence, meet new friends and learn important life skills.

Sixth Formers can opt to carry out lesson support, where they gain first-hand experience of teaching students of all ages; they can join the debating club or even learn another language.

There are ample opportunities to get involved with sporting activities too, whether that is simply five-a-side football or coaching.

Many subjects also offer a range of trips. These include visits to Parliament, national art galleries and productions of plays or musicals that are being studied on the course.

In recent years there have been a number of foreign visits, the Geography department has take students to both Pompeii and Iceland as part of their study of volcanic activity.

There has also been a Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) trip which allows students to experience first

hand the culture and language of Spain.

The Science faculty has visited CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and the Large Hadron Collider; the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator.

These trips bring the lesson content to life and offer our students unique experiences to travel, learn and develop both academically and personally.

COMMITTEE

The Sixth Form Committee plays an integral part in the life of the sixth form and the entire school. During the summer term of Year 12 we invite students to apply for a number of key positions within the committee these include: chair and vice chair, charity representatives, marketing and lower school liaison. There are many positions on offer and we are delighted with the calibre of the students that successfully lead in these areas.

The committee regularly reports to the school leadership team and the governing body. They are involved in pushing new initiatives forward and have a key deciding role within the school.

Committee activities include raising money for both local and national charities; organising whole school events like non-uniform days, quizzes and movie events. They also play a very important role in the delivery of the end of year Prom.

The committee meets weekly and its members are often asked to attend assemblies and market the Sixth Form to our local 11-16 schools. They play a key role as ambassadors for all school events and act as role models for the entire cohort. There is chance for all students to get actively involved in the committee. The new Year 12 student reps get to work alongside the Year 13 committee members in the hope that these students will then take the lead in their final year. Such a role within the Sixth Form looks great on a CV or university application as the committee provides our students with vital leadership and team-working opportunities.

THE SIXTH FORMHIGHER EDUCATION

A vast majority of the Year 13 cohort will apply successfully to progress their studies at University. We have developed a very thorough programme to support students and parents with the application process.

We regularly invite universities into school to provide students with specialist advice and guidance. We also hold an event for parents to cover the evolving financial support and qualifications reforms.

Students are encouraged to research their options fully. This can involve

attending University open days, or becoming a member of our various university outreach schemes such as Discover Law or STEM.

The school holds an annual Careers Fair where students and parents can access impartial advice on a range of career paths and opportunities with local companies.

In addition to advice about Higher Education we also offer support with Apprenticeships and employment routes.

Kaya Scott-Skingsley was one of the highest achieving students this year, having gained an A* and 3 As in business studies, maths, further maths and psychology. She has been at Tupton Hall School since she was 11, and she has now embarked on a maths degree at the University of Leeds.

Kaya said: “I’m so pleased with my results. I couldn’t have hoped for better grades. I have really enjoyed my time at Tupton Hall Sixth Form. It’s the people that make it great. The sixth form is lively and friendly. And there are a lot of places around school where you can go to study either on your own or with other people.”

AIM HIGH AND ACHIEVEA LEVEL RESULTS

Building on last year’s best ever A Level results, Tupton Hall Sixth Form students have once again achieved a 99 per cent pass rate, with 71 per cent of grades being A* - Cs.

The subjects which achieved the most top grades were psychology, art and travel and tourism.

Head of Sixth Form Mrs Charlotte Burton said she was ‘incredibly proud’ of what students had achieved this year.

“The pressure on students to achieve the highest level is immense. Our students are applying for highly competitive courses such as social work, primary education and law. They worked hard for their exams and completed extensive work to ensure that when the results were published their places at their chosen universities could be confirmed.”

“It is a very stressful time but ultimately fantastic to see so many of our students celebrating their achievements and looking forward to a wonderful future.”
