As the state’s flagship and most comprehensive university, we offer excellence in academics, state-of-the-art research, countless student organizations and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through study abroad, internships and community service experiences.

But what really sets us apart is our spirit, warmth and Southern hospitality. There’s a strong connection among all our students — from freshmen through upperclassmen — faculty and the community. It’s a feeling that everyone understands once they step foot onto our campus.

From move-in day to their first job interview, we strive to nurture and grow our students to be successful. No matter what challenges they take on, they’ll always feel connected to their Gamecock family.

South Carolina Honors CollegeOur top-ranked Honors College is a “college within a college,” where professors fuel students’ imaginations. More than 600 creative, challenging and often unconventional courses require independent thinking, deep exploration and, in some cases, a sense of humor. Honors students have access to robust funding for research, study abroad, internships, service learning and senior thesis work. They can also compete for substantial universitywide funding opportunities, and the Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs helps all students identify and compete for regional, national and international awards.

The Honors College also offers many innovative programs and opportunities, including the Washington Semester Program, the 3+3-year law school degree, the 3+4-year BARSC MD degree, Honors study abroad experiences and community-building activities.

LIKELIHOOD OF AN ADMITTED FRESHMAN RECEIVING A UNIVERSITY MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

This chart is a guide and is not a guarantee of future awards. Each entering class competes with itself, which influences how many students are offered merit awards and what academic credentials are necessary to qualify for these awards. Some merit scholarships are based upon additional or alternate criteria and/or may have other eligibility requirements (e.g., citizenship). All freshman applicants who meet our early action, Honors College or regular application and credentials deadlines will be considered for university merit scholarships.

Note: This chart has nothing to do with probability of admission, which is an entirely separate process from awarding of scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIP CONSIDERATIONAll freshman applicants who meet our early action, Honors College or regular application and credentials deadlines will be considered for university merit scholarships. We’ll look at their highest official SAT or ACT scores that we receive by Feb. 1. Students don’t have to fill out a separate scholarship application unless they wish to compete for the Stamps, Carolina, 1801, McNair, Horseshoe or Alumni Scholar awards. (These require completion of the Honors College/Top Scholars application.)

SCHOLARSHIP NOTIFICATIONMost university scholarships are awarded in mid-March for the freshman class entering in the fall. Students will receive notification via email to check their admissions portal. Departmental award notification varies; students should check directly with the department about the schedule. Due to the competitiveness of our awarding process and financial aid pool, the university is unable to negotiate aid or scholarships. Note: The university only sends notification to award recipients. If students are interested in their scholarship status after mid-March, they should call the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

POST-FRESHMAN YEAR SCHOLARSHIPSThe university awards listed in this booklet are only offered to entering freshmen. However, departments may offer scholarships for upperclassmen. Students should check with their academic advisor about the opportunity for any awards.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AIDNearly all forms of financial aid — including grants, loans, scholarships and some student employment opportunities — start with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, at fafsa.gov. The FAFSA becomes available on Oct. 1 of every year.

FINANCIAL AID NOTIFICATIONThe university’s Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships will notify students of any awards via their university email account. This email notification refers students to Self Service Carolina (SSC) for detailed information about their awards. Admitted students receive login information for SSC and can monitor their financial aid application status, as well as view and accept their awards, on SSC.

UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPSSome academic colleges and departments at the University of South Carolina award scholarships to outstanding new freshmen. Other scholarships are available only after the freshman year. Eligibility and actual award amounts vary. Some departments award scholarships based on information provided with the application for admission, and others require additional action on the student’s part. For a complete list of departmental scholarships, corresponding criteria and application requirements, visit sc.edu/financialaid, select “Scholarships” then “Departmental Scholarships.” You’ll find a variety of scholarships listed.

NON-UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPSMany students receive scholarships and other financial aid from sources outside the university. It is their responsibility to notify both the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Bursar’s Office of any non-university scholarships. There is generally no limit to the amount of non-university scholarship awards students may receive.

ATHLETIC GRANTS-IN-AIDStudents interested in playing on a Division I NCAA team should talk to their high school coach in their junior year. These awards do not participate in the tuition reduction benefit provided to some nonresident scholarship recipients.

Additional Information Regarding Scholarships

SELF-REPORTED HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTStudents will be asked to self-report a limited portion of their academic record within the online application. They will also be required to upload a clear, legible, unofficial copy of their high school transcript with their full name and the name of their high school. We strongly encourage students to obtain a copy of their transcript before beginning the application. The official high school transcript is not a required credential. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions prefers students not send an official transcript unless we notify them that one is needed. Please note that official transcripts will be required for students who are admitted and intend to enroll at the university.

SOUTH CAROLINA HONORS COLLEGE ADMISSIONThe Honors College/Top Scholars application is separate and will be accessible to qualified students in their application portal checklists after submitting the general university application and paying the application fee. We strongly encourage all students to complete the general admission application by the Oct. 15 early action deadline. All Honors College application materials must be received by Nov. 15, including any new self-reported test scores. In addition, two letters of recommendation are required. Recommenders are encouraged to submit letters by Nov. 15, but the latest we will accept them is Dec. 1. Honors College decisions are sent separately from regular university admissions decisions and are released by mid-February. Honors applicants are automatically reviewed for South Carolina’s most prestigious scholarships: the Stamps, Carolina, 1801, McNair and Horseshoe Scholar Awards.

Additional Information Regarding Admissions

12

Additional Information Regarding Standardized Tests

SELF-REPORTED TEST SCORESThe Office of Undergraduate Admissions uses self-reported standardized test scores to make initial admission and scholarship decisions. This includes admission to our scholar programs such as the South Carolina Honors College, Top Scholars and Capstone Scholars.

TEST SCORE VERIFICATIONAll admitted students who intend to enroll at South Carolina are required to submit official test scores for score verification. We must have the official scores on which students were admitted to finalize admission and enrollment. Students should use school code 5818 for the SAT and 3880 for the ACT. Official scores must be received directly from the testing agency no later than May 15. Otherwise, students’ admission and scholarships (if eligible) will be in jeopardy.

SUPERSCORINGSouth Carolina does not superscore the ACT. We consider the highest composite score from a single ACT test date. However, we do superscore the SAT and use the highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and highest Math score from the same or separate SAT dates, whichever is higher. We also do not superscore between official SAT and self-reported SAT scores. We will only superscore within official or self-reported scores.

MULTIPLE TEST ATTEMPTSStudents are required to report all test attempts. Undergraduate Admissions will use the test scores that give students the greatest advantage in the admissions process, which is why it is necessary to self-report all test attempts. Failure to report all scores may impact admission or scholarship decisions.

UPDATING TEST SCORES AFTER APPLICATION FOR ADMISSIONApplying early works to students’ advantage since the date of application to the university can affect housing priority. Students will be able to update the self-reported score record after applying through the admissions application portal until Feb. 1. We strongly encourage doing this, as all scores are considered in our final notification and scholarship evaluation round.

TEST SCORES FOR EARLY ACTION APPLICATIONSEarly action applicants have until Nov. 15 to update their self-reported test record via the admission application portal. Self-reported scores received by this date will be considered for our December notification round.

TEST DATE DEADLINESThe December SAT and ACT are the last test dates from which a student can receive results in time to meet our February 1 credentials deadline. Credentials submitted by this date will be used to render final decisions related to admission, scholarships, Capstone and Honors.

REPORTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TEST SCORESSouth Carolina’s self-reported score policy applies to domestic freshman applicants only. Due to the highly variable nature of international educational curricula, official scores and transcripts are still required for international applicant evaluations.
