What do Occupational Therapists do?

Occupational therapists work with people of any age to promote health, prevent disability, and develop or maintain abilities.

Occupational Therapists can:

• help people learn new ways of doing activities

• adapt equipment or materials used every day

• make changes to the places people live and work.

Interprofessional Education (IPE)

Throughout your programme of study you will be given opportunities to engage in IPE with students from other health, education and social care courses.

IPE will enable you to learn with, from and about each other to improve communication, teamworking, quality of care and services.

BSc Occupational Therapy

Entry criteria:

• Five GCSE’s including Maths and English language at grade C or above and one of the following:

• A levels grades of BBC (in subjects other than general studies)

• BTEC at level 3: 18 units, graded DDM

• Access at level 3: 30 credits at merit, 15 at Distinction

• Some Open University courses – please ask for further advice

• Scottish Higher and Irish Leaving Certificate equivalent to 112 UCAS tariff points

• We encourage mature students to apply and consider each application on its own merit.

• We require evidence of successful recent study (within the last 5 years)

• If your first language isn’t English, we require an achievement of level 7 in IELTS with all components to be no less than 6.5.

• All offers of a place are subject to successful Occupational Health screening and a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Screening (DBS) report.

Interview procedure includes a group discussion, one to one interview and written activity (submitted in advance).

You are strongly recommended to visit a number of departments either hospital or social services to ensure a good understanding of the profession – and this may be a condition of your offer.

UCAS Application and Your Personal Statement

The course is competitive – writing a good personal statement is essential.

Your statement should reflect your:

• desire to study occupational therapy

• what you know about the profession

• any work or voluntary experience

Include any personal achievements -volunteering, supporting other groups or anything that demonstrates your communication and team working skills

Funding and Additional Costs• Travel/accommodation – We will work closely

with you to find a placement local to your home or local to the university, however some students may incur travel and accommodation expenses. This will be organised in consultation with you and your placement tutor.

• Uniform – you will be provided with a uniform (2 tops and 2 pairs of trousers). Additional uniform items can be purchased.

• Skills – craft, art, cooking material to a maximum of £25 a year.

• Food Hygiene Course – students are required to complete a City and Guilds (level 2) food hygiene course. Available online – approximate cost £10-20.

• Eligible to apply for a means tested NHS bursary
