Goal: In Guatemala a service is available and managed by a local organization which arranges consultancies by local, regional, and international volunteering senior professionals to SMEs.

The Goal of this project is to establish a local organization which arranges consultancies by local and international volunteers to SMEs, following the model of Swisscontact’s Senior Expert Contact. The personnel set up infrastructure of this project is very light: a local coordinator, a part-time monitoring expert. Administrative services are rendered by Swisscontact’s country office in Guatemala. The strategy of the project consists of four main activities (in yellow the achievements so far): Recruiting local volunteering experts: mostly these are economically still active senior professionals, motivated to help small and medium enterprises; The service has to be known by potential clients, their representing organizations and potential experts. To this end, the project was was continuously promoted through various channels; The basis for promotion are successful missions. Unfortunately, the COVID 19 pandemic put a halt on presence in SMEs. Remote consultancies were possible in some cases. To anchor the services in a local organization will require a careful analysis of possible partnerships. Our good knowledge of the institutional landscape of Guatemala is essential for this. The elements for such an organisation will be defined during a workshop in September.

In an ideal world, a local organization would have the following characteristics: It would be owned by one or several Guatemalan partners; dedicated to support SMEs; It would be free from particular interests (local, sectorial, political etc.); Services are based con volunteering work, i.e. no honorary is claimed from SMEs for first-time services. For covering costs for coordination and marketing options are: sponsorships, cross-financing through other profitable services, membership fees among others The services are directed to Small and Medium Enterprises and are demand oriented. This means that the SEC-organization does not promote available experts among enterprises, but rather identifies for each demand a suitable expert, either locally or in the region or in Switzerland.
