Slide 10 In the Old Testament, Genesis is the book of booksa divine account whose worth cannot be measured. Exodus and Deuteronomy are also of surpassing worth. Numbers, Joshua, Judges, the Samuels, the Kings, and the Chronicles are all essential history, interwoven with deeds of faith and wonder that form a background for an understanding of the Christian faith. Leviticus has no special application to us and, except for a few passages, need not give us permanent concern. Ruth and Esther are lovely stories that are part of our heritage. Bruce R. McConkie Quorum of the Twelve (CES Symposium on the New Testament, 17 August 1984) Slide 11 The Psalms contain marvelous poetry, and the portions that are messianic and that speak of the last days and the Second Coming are of great import. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Lamentations are interesting books; Job is for people who like the book of Job; and the Song of Solomon is biblical trashit is not inspired writing. Ezra, Nehemiah, Obadiah, and Jonah are the least of the prophets; and all the rest of the prophetsIsaiah above them alleach in his place and order set forth the doctrinal and prophetic word that must be studied in depth. Slide 19 Bible, Bible Dictionary, p. 622 In the Old Testament the word testament represents a Hebrew word meaning covenant. The Old Covenant is the law that was given to Moses. The New Covenant is the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the Savior came in the meridian of time, He restored the gospel to the Jews in Palestine. Since they had strayed, even from the law of Moses, it was a new covenant to them. Thus we have the record called the Old and the New Testaments. Slide 20 To help his sons and daughters remember their promises to himand certainly to help them remember his promises to themGod has directed that the nature and significance of those covenants be recorded. In that process, the texts and documents preserving such promises have also been called covenants. In fact, the words testament and covenant are virtually synonymous in their theological usage. Thus, the Old and New Testaments, as we commonly refer to them, are written testimonies or witnesses of the covenants between God and man in various dispensations. Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (Christ and the New Covenant, p. 7-8) Slide 21 [A]ll who receive this record [the Book of Mormon] will be convinced of the covenants of the Lord, including his promise that the contemporary remnants of the House of Israel are not cast off forever. Thus the Book of Mormon is the preeminent statement of God's covenant with and his love for his children here on earth. It is his definitive latter-day declaration regarding the atoning sacrifice of his Son. It is his great revelation of the greatest Revelation God has ever given us. Jeffrey R. Books Slide 29 The New Testament = The New Covenant Christ is the messenger of the covenant (Mal. 3:1) Christ is the mediator of the new covenant (Heb. 12:24; D&C 76:69). Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17) The New Testament records Christs fulfillment of His part of the Covenant (Galatians 3:16). Slide 30 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (Matthew 26:28) Slide 31 Christ, in the days of His flesh, proposed to make a covenant with [Israel], but they rejected Him and His proposals, and in consequence thereof, they were broken off, and no covenant was made with them at that time. Thus after this chosen family had rejected Christ and His proposals, the heralds of salvation said to them, "Lo, we turn unto the Gentiles;" and the Gentiles received the covenant, and were grafted in from whence the chosen family were broken off.
