Exodus 8:20-24

20 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and present yourself to Pharaoh, as he goes out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 21 Or else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. 23 Thus I will put a division between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall happen.”’” 24 And the LORD did so. There came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants' houses. Throughout all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by the swarms of flies.

Observation & Interpretation:• Plague 4 – Swarms of Flies (dog flies, gadflies, cockroaches, scarab beetles) • All over Egypt, but NOT in the land of Goshen where Israel lived• Announced in advance; specific time• Land ruined • Egyptian Magicians cannot reproduce

Exodus 8:25-32

25 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” 26 But Moses said, “It would not be right to do so, for the offerings we shall sacrifice to the LORD our God are an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He tells us.” 28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you must not go very far away. Plead for me.” 29 Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you and I will plead with the LORD

that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only let not Pharaoh cheat again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.” 30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD. 31 And the LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and did not let the people go.

Observation & Interpretation:• Plague 4 – Swarms of Flies (dog flies, gadflies, cockroaches, scarab beetles) • Moses: No compromise; God honors Moses’ prayer for Pharaoh and Egypt• Pharaoh hardened his heart AGAIN• Egyptian Magicians cannot reproduce

Exodus 9:1-7

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2 For if you refuse to let them go and still hold them, 3 behold, the hand of the LORD will fall with a very severe plague upon your livestock that are in the field, the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks. 4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that belongs to the people of Israel shall die.”’” 5 And the LORD set a time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.” 6 And the next day the LORD did this thing. All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one of the livestock of the people of Israel died. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and behold, not one of the livestock of Israel was dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

Observation & Interpretation:

• Plague 5 – Murrain (“death”) on livestock

• All Egyptian livestock, but NOT the livestock of the children of Israel in Goshen

• Announced in advance; specific time

• Pharaoh check on the livestock of the children of Israel – No problems here!

• Pharaoh hardened his heart AGAIN

• Egyptian Magicians cannot reproduce

Exodus 9:8-12

8 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw them in the air in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 It shall become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and become boils breaking out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10 So they took soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses threw it in the air, and it became boils breaking out in sores on man and beast. 11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians. 12 But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had spoken to Moses.

Observation & Interpretation:• Plague 6 – Boils• Black soot from a brick kiln – directly related to Israel’s slave labor• Not announced in advance, but demonstrated in the presence of Pharaoh• Affected all Egyptians, but not the children of Israel • The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart in judgement (Romans 1) • Egyptian Magicians incapacitated!

1. What title would you give to this passage and how would you summarize its content?

2. What was the distinction God made to Pharaoh, through Moses, in announcing the fourth plague, other than it involved a swarm of flies? What was God’s purpose in making this distinction?

3. What concern did Moses express about Pharaoh’s attempt to appease God by permitting the Israelites to “sacrifice to their God,” as long as it was, “within the land”? What does Pharaoh’s “on again, off again” response in offering an alternative reveal about where he is “at” in this contest with Moses and conflict with God?

4. What did you find particularly interesting about the fifth plague, “pestilence on the livestock of Egypt,” and particularly, how it affected the Egyptian people and represented an attack on their gods?

5. Why do you think Pharaoh sent his servants to check the livestock of Israel? What did Pharaoh learn and how did it affect his decision-making process about letting the children of Israel go?

6. What are the theological implications and other significant aspects of the sixth plague, “boils breaking out on man and beast,” particularly the metaphorical connection with the “soot from a kiln”?

7. What are your major take-aways from this lesson?

1. Moses and Aaron were eager to share some “good news” from God with Pharaoh. Pharaoh wasn’t just uninterested, he attacked! Have you ever wanted to share some good news about God with someone and had a similar experience? Share your story.

2. Consider: “The point is clear from the chapter: when the people of God attempt to devote their full service and allegiance to God, they encounter opposition from the world” and “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity of helping and saving.” Have you ever experienced this? Exodus 3:1-22

• Moses is tending the sheep of his father-in-law, Reuel (“friend of God”), a.k.a. Jethro (“overflow”), the priest of Midian – a descendant of Abraham and Keturah – probably monotheistic worshipping the God of Abraham

• God (the Angel of the Lord) calls Moses from the burning bush and tasks him to lead God’s people out of Egypt (save them; deliver them) so that they can obey, serve, and worship God and be a blessing to the nations

• God promises mission success (Exodus 3:17-22) and instructions: 18 And they [the elders of Israel] will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand.

Exodus 4:1-31

• Moses is still doubtful and/or afraid: “they will not believe or listen”

• God assures Moses that He will give him the words to say

• Moses still resists: “Please send someone else!”
