BIENVENUE À MONTRÉAL

Renowned for its multilingual flair, vibrant nightlife, international festivals – jazz, comedy, film – major museums, symphony orchestra, and famous smoked meat and bagels, Montreal is a great place to live.

McGill’s beautiful main campus is in the heart of downtown Montreal. You’ll be able to take in the best that big city life has to offer – culture, food, sports and so much more without venturing far from home.

Whether you live on campus or in one of the adjacent neighbourhoods, the entire city is at your doorstep.

A diverse, multi-ethnic and multilingual metropolis with a population of over three million, Montreal is often ranked as one of the greatest cities to be a student. A common misconception is that you need to be able to speak French. However, McGill is an English university, and you will be able to easily navigate yourself through the city with no prior knowledge of French.

YOU WILL FEEL AT HOME

Take a few steps inside the Roddick Gates and you’ll find yourself in a campus full of people striding across tree-lined spaces to classes, meetings or lunch with friends.

The people you meet and the friends you make at McGill are

an important part of your

education. There are hundreds

of campus clubs and

associations where you can get

together with others who are

passionate about the same

things you are. Join a choir, try

your hand at theatre, get

involved in politics, or do

community work. You could find

yourself doing something you

never imagined.

LIFE IN REZ

There is no better way to settle in and make friends than living in residence. Best of all, residence accommodation is guaranteed to new first-year students admitted

before June 15th and includes a meal plan.

McGill has residence halls near the downtown campus that offer classic dorm rooms as well as hotel-style rooms with private washrooms. Most athletes find a home away from home in Upper Residence which consists of Douglas, Gardner, Molson and McConnell. For a more independent lifestyle, there are shared-facilities houses and apartment-style residences. No matter what residence you choose, you’ll meet and bond with great people from a variety of backgrounds.

If you prefer to live on your own, the Off-Campus Housing Office can help you find a place in one of the nearby neighbourhoods.

LIFE AT MCGILL

HOW WILL I KEEP UP WITH MY CLASSES?

This year, the Martlet Field Hockey squad had seven players make the Principal’s Athletic-Academic List, a list for athletes that maintain an outstanding GPA. With good time management skills and the will to work hard both on and off the field, achieving and maintaining high grades is possible in any faculty. A free varsity tutoring service and your supportive teammates are good resources whenever you are feeling overwhelmed. The Martlet team has players in a wide variety of majors and programs, so no matter what class you’re having trouble with there is someone who has taken the class before and can offer some helpful advice. Plus, your teammates are instant study buddies for any library session.

WHAT IS MONTREAL

Montreal has consistently been ranked as one of the top five cities in which to be a student. There are many exciting and unique things going on that are all readily available to young people. The excellent public transit system and affordable taxi services make the city extremely accessible without a car. There are endless amounts of concerts and events - everything from Igloofest to Poutine Week - to occupy your time away from the field.

WHAT WILL ‘THE PLAYING’ COMMITMENT BE LIKE?

The OUA field hockey season goes from September to October and CIS championships are at the beginning of November. Preseaon begins in the third week of August. In-season field practices are Tuesday through Friday in the mornings along with one practice a week geared to general conditioning. We are away four to five weekends during September and October for tournament-style league games. Once the season is over, the practice schedule is reduced to one conditioning practice a week to give you time to study and enjoy everything else McGill has to offer. During the winter semester we practice twice a week, and travel for a maximum of two tournaments.

AS A FRESHMAN, WILL I

PLAY?

The coaches at McGill are strong believers in merit-based playing time. Effort, skill, fitness and attitude will always be taken into consideration before seniority.

WHY SHOULD I COME TO McGILL?

McGill is one of the most internationally recognized institutions in Canada. It is highly ranked in all faculties and programs, and is recognized as a major feeder school to some of the world’s biggest companies. Coming to a larger school gives you the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. McGill alumni are well represented in industry, the arts, politics, philanthropy and science which creates an advantageous network for students and graduates.

WHAT MAKES McGILL FIELD HOCKEY RIGHT FOR ME?

McGill field hockey is the perfect student-athlete balance. You not only get the opportunity to be a varsity athlete, but as the season is short and practices minimal you get to enjoy playing varsity sports during the fall with plenty of time after that to explore everything that McGill and Montreal have to offer.

Many of our players sit on committees within their faculties or contribute to campus life in other ways. These opportunities are unique to field hockey and contribute to your overall experience at McGill.

MEET THE MARTLETS

#1: Marianne Emler

My name is Marianne and I'm in my third year at McGill. I chose McGill because it has a great reputation, has courses for my political science major which seemed very interesting and is located in Montreal, which I heard was a buzzing, bilingual city. I was also excited about the prospect of living in North America and getting to discover another culture.

I decided to play field hockey because it's a sport which I have been playing for a long time and I love having a team as a ‘family away from home’ while I'm here.

#2: Katie Friedman My name is Katie Friedman and I‘m in my first year studing linguistics. I chose McGill because of the opportunity to study in Montreal and discover somewhere new. Being a part of the field hockey team has made my adjustment to university life tons of fun. My teammates are some of the most supportive, caring, and goofy people I’ve ever met.

#3: Aliza Rana

My name is Aliza Rana. I am in my third year at McGill studying economics and chemistry. McGill checked all the boxes when I was deciding which university to attend – it's an international university in a great city filled with amazing and inspirational students and faculty. McGill has allowed me to pursue an unusual double major while also being able to

participate in various extra-curriculars. Joining the field hockey team has defined my time at McGill. The team is my family in Montreal, both in the on-season and the off-season. Even though we have a short and intense season, my transition to university was so much smoother by being a part of the team. I couldn't imagine my time at McGill without the support of the team.

#5: Erin O’Rourke

I’m in my fourth and final year at McGill studying International Development with a minor in Middle East Studies and International Relations. I chose Montreal because I wanted a different experience from my small hometown in Ontario. Transitioning to a new and larger school was hard but the McGill field hockey community has made that transition

much easier and way more enjoyable. There is always someone to go to the library with, to check out a hip band with, to cook with, to try new restaurants with, to workout with, and most importantly to laugh with.

#7: Eleni Siganos

McGill was an easy choice for me as I was able to choose to attend a prestigious school where I can play field hockey without it completely taking over my life. Also, there aren’t many better places to live while doing an undergrad than Montreal. Everything from food to shopping to parks is all at your disposal.

Our season is really short and intense, but the team understands that we are students first. Most of my teammates have become my best friends and being part of this team has allowed me to be part of a family and not feel lost in a big school.

#8: Alex Breukels

My name is Alex Breukels, I’m a second year business student at McGill. I chose McGill because of its reputable business program and location in an amazing city with great night life! I decided to play field hockey for McGill because I’ve been playing field hockey my whole life and couldn’t imagine stopping after high school. I couldn’t be happier with my

decision; I love my team and the fact that I have family away from home made the transition to university so much easier. My second year has been even better and I can’t wait for the next.

#9: Sarah Main

Hey my name is Sarah Main and I am a fourth year sociology and economics student. I chose to come to McGill because of its prestigious reputation and the amazing city of Montreal. McGill field hockey allows me to keep a balanced lifestyle of sports, school and great support system.

#12: Kylie Nabata

I’m your captain Kylie Nabata. I am in my third year in biochemistry. I decided to come to McGill because there is no better place in Canada to study science, and no better city to be a student than Montreal. After playing many years of field hockey with Team BC, I was skeptical that McGill field hockey would be a good fit since I knew the program

not to be as competitive as UofT or UBC. I am thrilled that I decided to play. I have met my best friends through the field hockey team and had some of my greatest university memories with these girls. They are all my second family.

#14: Alice Podmore

Hello! My name is Alice and I’m working towards completing my master’s degree in physical therapy, I hope to be able to work with sports teams when I graduate. I chose McGill partially because of their great physical therapy program and partially because the diversity of both the school and the city of Montreal. I wanted to play on the field hockey team because

sports have always been a huge part of my life and I couldn’t imagine spending the best years of my life without the camaraderie and support of a team, and it’s a decision I will never regret making.

#15: Alison Ross

I’m Alison! I’m in first year studying Arts&Science. I chose to come to McGIll because of its phenomenal worldwide reputation and because of the cultural diversity in Montreal. I chose to play field hockey because I wanted to play my favourite sport at a varsity level and enjoy the benefits of being a part of a team and training towards a common goal. I love

my team, school, and city and couldn’t be more excited for the next 3.5 years here!!

#16: Allyssa Hooper

My name is Allyssa and I am in my fourth year studying Physiology at McGill. I chose McGill because of the diverse options in the Faculty of Science and because of the many research

foropportunities undergraduate students. One of the best things about going to McGill is that you get to live in downtown Montreal, where there is an

endless supply of fun things to do. I decided to play field hockey because I love field hockey! This team has given me a family away from home and best friends that will last a lifetime.

#18: Ellen McCann

I'm in second year and majoring in pharmacology. I chose to come to McGill because it has a stellar reputation for science and playing field hockey has been the best decision. Right away when I got on campus I had a group of girls who really looked out for me and gave the best advice about school and life at McGill. There is a huge sense of

belonging that comes with being on the team and my experience has been amazing!

#19: Larischa de Wet

I’m Lari and I’m in my fourth year, studying honours biochemistry and minoring in Italian. I decided to come to McGill because of the fantastic research programs and opportunities for undergraduates to engage in research, as well as its international reputation. I love living in Montreal because it has such an international vibe, and there are

so many interesting coffee shops, restaurants and shops to explore. I wanted to play field hockey to balance out the academic side of McGill and to not only be focused on my studies. By playing on the team, I’ve made so many friends that I would otherwise not have met. It’s amazing to have a group of people who understand exactly what I’m going through.

#20: Breeshey Roskams-Hieter

My name is Breeshey Roskams-Hieter and I’m a first year student at McGill University. I am currently studying in the Life Sciences branch of the faculty of science and I’m loving it! I chose McGill because it has an amazing faculty of science program and is based in one the most happenin’ cities in the world! Playing on the field hockey team helps

me stay fit and organized during the season and also gives me a great group of girls to help support me through my years at McGill.

#22: Julia Rogers

Hi, my name is Julia and I am a second year International Development student at McGill. I chose to come to McGill not only because of the incredible international reputation of the school but also because I knew I wanted to go somewhere where I could play field hockey at the university level. McGill provided the best of both worlds for me

in that I was able to go to a world class university and play the sport I love as a varsity athlete. Not to mention living in Montréal, with its diverse liberal culture which includes amazing events, restaurants, nightlife and

historic sites.

Hi, my name is Julia and I on coming to McGill.

LETTER FROM THE CAPTAIN

Dear Recruits,

There is so much to consider when deciding which university to attend that it can all become extremely overwhelming. I can guarantee that no matter where you decide to go you won’t regret it. However I know that if you choose McGill it will be one of the best experiences of your life.

When I was considering which university to attend, I wanted something that would take me outside of my comfort zone. Travelling across the country definitely satisfied that need. Despite being far from home and everything around me being hugely different from what I was used to, it was great to have the consistency of field hockey. In your first year of university, practice and teammates will seem like the only thing that is the same as at home.

At a huge school like McGill it can be really easy to get lost, but with a support group like your team you will never have to feel that way. It is really great to get to know upper classmen that can help you with school, stress and any other valuable information at McGill. Just the other day one of the rookies was saying how she would have never known where the best libraries were had she not been introduced to them by her older teammates. It is also great to know some people not living in residence who are completely willing to cook you some homemade food! This being said, playing on the field hockey team does not mean that you will have no time for making new friends. In residence you will be making lots of friends and this can be done just as easily while on the team.

One of the greatest things about McGill is that you are living in the heart of downtown in a very safe and student-friendly city. I can guarantee you that your friends attending Queens, Western or Dalhousie will be extremely jealous of all the amazing things you have access to. They will all be dying to pay you a visit in no time! The great thing about McGill Field Hockey is that despite being a varsity athlete it does not take over your entire life and allows you to experience everything Montreal and McGill have to offer.

I know one of my biggest concerns when deciding whether or not play field hockey at McGill, was my grades. I worked hard in high school to maintain a high GPA so that I could attend a school like McGill. Furthermore, I knew I wanted to potentially apply for medical school which requires exceptional grades. It should be known that everyone in the program, coaches included, believe that the student in athlete becomes first. If there is ever a conflict with classes or tutorials, you are allowed to miss practice. It is not easy to maintain an amazing GPA while being an athlete but my experience is that I actually do better during season because my time management has to be so much better. We have had players graduate with outstanding GPAs in all faculties and there have been many articles surfacing lately that show major companies favour hiring varsity athletes because they already know how to work as a team and manage their time.

McGill Field Hockey will be an amazing experience for you; one you will never regret. If you have any questions, or would like to chat, please do not hesitate to email me or any of the other players!

Sincerely,

Kylie Nabata

THE COACHING STAFF

JEAN-PIERE TURPAIN

Assisant coach, Jean-Pierre Turpin joined the team in 2006. He possesses a lifetime of field hockey knowledge and is responsble for recruiting head coach

Laurent Fayen to join the team. J.P. started playing field hockey at the age of 14 for his father’s club at Lille University Club. In 1967 JP started playing for the Second National Division for France and shortly after left for Canada. His first team in Quebec was Montreal United. He also played for Henri Bourrassa, Montreal Ambassadors, and then started his coaching career with the Montreal Red Star Olympique. JP enjoyed left wing in his youth and then switched to right half, which was his favourite position. However, JP also played center forward and sweeper throughout his career. JP has some crazy stories about his field hockey career, most notably a story involving poker on a train home from a tournament in Europe.

VIMAL PATEL

Vimal Patel is currently in his 6

th

year coaching the McGill field hockey team. He was first introduced to the sport when he was 12 years old and played for the Hotel

Taj Mahal junior field hockey team in Montreal. He then developed a positional preference in the midfield and forward lines. Between the age of 15 and 20, Vimal had the opportunity to play for several notable teams in several competitive leagues and tournaments across Eastern Canada and Northeastern US. Among others, he played for Red Star Olympique (Montreal) in the US Tri-State League Senior Men’s League. He played for Outaouais Field Hockey Club (Ottawa) at numerous competitions in Ontario as well the Boston Cup in the US, and finally played for the GOA Reds (Toronto) with whom he won the Montreal Cup in 2006. He also represented Quebec and Ontario at the Canada Summer Games. In 2005, as part of the Canadian junior national program, he represented Canada East during a friendly game versus the U.S. Junior National Team. In 2008, due to the lack of local competitions in Quebec, he decided to focus his attention to coaching the McGill Field Hockey team. Between 2008 & 2014, Vimal coached the team alongside JP and Laurent, two-time recipients of the OUA Coach of the Year Award. Vimal has spent his childhood growing up in Montreal and shares a passion for field hockey with his father who played in India in high school and college.

LAURENT FAYEN

Head coach Laurent Fayen has been a part of the team for 8 years. He first got into field hockey when he was 10 years old. His mom encouraged him to

join an after-school sport so he started to play at a club near his house. In 1983, the Pan American Games were in Caracas and Laurent was an official ball boy. After that experience he immediately fell in love with the game. Laurent started playing for the Venezuelan National team in 1987 at age 15 and played until 2003. During that period he played in two junior and two senior Pan Am Games. He loved to play as a defender and he was committed to playing until the final whistle, regardless of the score or who he was playing against. As part of the National Team of Venezuela requirements, he was responsible to be part of a development program to introduce field hockey in the local school system. When he was 18, he was coaching two teams, girls and boys, in a school league. Since 1994, when he moved to Canada, Laurent has played for Ontario and Quebec. As a coach he believes in hard work and discipline. He often says that if you cannot run, you cannot play!
