ProgramOverview

TheMScOEHprogramisoneoftheonlyprogramsinWesternCanadatoofferagraduatedegreeinhygiene.Hygieneisthesciencethatrecognizeshazardsthroughapplicationoftoxicologyandepidemiology,evaluatesexposuresinworkplacesandcommunities,andcontrolshazardsthroughuseofengineeringprincipleswiththeultimategoalofeliminatingorreducingthehazard.

TheUBCOEHprogramisuniqueinofferingitsprogramintwooptions:theproject(practicum)optionandthethesisoption.Thetypicalprojectoptiontimelineisstructuredsothatallacademiccourseworkcanbecompletedwithin20months.Theaveragetimeforathesisstudenttocompletetheircourseworkandresearchvariesbetween24and36months.

Tuition&OtherUBCFeesYouwillneedtopayyourUBCtuitionandstudentfeeswhenyoustartclassesinSeptember.UBCgraduateprogramfeesarepaidthreetimesperyear,inSeptember,January,andMay,forthedurationoftheprogramregardlessofnumberofcoursestaken.Theonlywayforstudentsnottopayfeesistobeonaleaveofabsence.

UBCRecreationCovid-19

ReturntoActivityUBC Athletics & Recreation is beginning to safely re-open our sport facilities and re-start our programs. As of July 13, most

UBC Sport Facilities including the UBC Aquatic Centre and the BirdCoop Fitness Centre will be re-opened with limited or

reduced activities to accommodate the guidelines and recommendations of local health authorities.

As additional facilities re-open and new programs are offered, updates will be shared. Here you will find the most up-to-date information about what’s open, available programs, and the

safety changes made to address COVID-19 concerns.

Fitness - There several gyms and fitness facilities on campus including the Student Rec Centre, ARC Fitness, the UBC

Bodyworks and a Gold’s Gym in the Village. Most have student membership pricing.

WhatisG+PS?Establishedin1949,GraduateandPostdoctoralStudies(G+PS)isthegoverningbodyforallgraduateprogramsatUBC.

G+PSapprovalisrequiredforawholehostofissuesrelatingtostudents:courseapprovals,statusintheprogram,programprogress,graduation,etc.YoucanusethisG+PSwebpageasreferenceforyourprogram.

AG+PSStudentOrientationisplannedfortheendofAugust-keepaneyeoutherefordateandtimeconfirmation.

AcademicProgressandPolicyMaster’sdegreestudentsareexpectedtomaintainagoodacademicstandingthroughouttheirprogram.Aminimumof60%mustbeobtainedinanycoursetakenbyastudentenrolledinaMaster’sdegreeprogramforthestudenttobegrantedpassstanding,andonlysixcreditsofpassstanding(60-67%)maybecountedtowardsaMaster’sdegreeprogram.Forallothercourses,aminimumof68%mustbeobtained.Youcanreadtheacademicprogresspolicyforfurtherinformation.

TheGraduatePathwaystoSuccess(GPS)programisapaletteofnon-creditworkshops,seminarsandactivitiesdesignedtocomplementyourgraduateprogram’sacademiccurriculumandmentorshipexperienceaswellastheOEHshortcourserequirement.Theyfillupfast!

OEHTravelFundStudentsmaybeeligibletoapplyfortravelsupporttoamaximumof$400topresentaposterorpapertoanofficialconferenceorsymposium.ThisisissuedthroughtheOEHdivision.

CascadiaConference–duetoCOVID-19itwillnotbeheldthisyear ThisjointconferencebetweenUBC,UW,andSFU,isheldeveryyear.Itisusually heldinearlyJanuaryandrunsfor2days.AllfirstyearOEHstudentsareeligibleforpartialfinancialsupporttoattend.InordertocrosstheCanada/USborder,studentsrequireapassport.

ProgramRequirementsTheMScOEHprogramofferstwooptionsforstudentstochoosefrom-theProjectOptionandtheThesisOption-bothwhichrequirethecompletionof42credits.

Dependingonwhichprogramoptionyouchoose,somecourseselectionsdiffer.Whendecidingonwhichprogramoptionisbestsuitedforyou,studentsmayspeakwiththeiradvisors,theProgramDirectororanyOEHFaculty.ThedecisiondoesnotneedtobepredetermineduponentrytotheMScOEHprogram–studentsaregivenuntilDecembertodeclarewhichoptiontheywishtotake.Belowisaquickguidetobothoptions:

RelationshipsbetweenOEHCoursesTherearethreecoreareasofexpertiseinOccupationalandEnvironmentalHygiene,areasthatarekeyskillstolearnforpracticinginthisfield.

RecognitionEvaluation andControlYoucanemphasizecertainaspectsofhygienetocoverallareasbroadly.KnowingandunderstandingtheseconceptsarecentraltotheMScOEHdegree,foreithertheProjectorThesisroute.

Ifyouareunsureaboutwhichareastostudy,orhavegeneralquestionsaboutwhatcoursescanleadtoaparticulardesiredcompetencyyouwishtograduatewith,itishighlyrecommendedthatyouspeakwithyourfacultyadvisoraboutyourcourseselections.
