A different way of learning

• Less emphasis on whole class teaching• Children work most often in small groups, in pairs

or alone, on a range of cross-curricular activities• Greater opportunity for children to learn through

play and first hand, practical experience. • Activities stem from the children’s own interests

Page 3: Welcome to the Key Stage One Unit

A different way of learning

• Changes to the learning environment• Classroom resources designed for play-

based learning• More emphasis on observation and on-

going assessment of what children can do rather than relying solely on written outcomes and tests

• A ratio of 1 adult to 10 children

Why change?

• Improve transition from reception to Key Stage One.• During the school’s last OFSTED it was

recommended that the exemplary practice observed in the Foundation Stage was extended into Key Stage One and across school.

• Research shows that children under seven learn best through first hand experience and investigation and do not respond as well when listening for long periods and learning in abstract ways.

• In many countries in Europe children don’t start school until 7 years old.

Benefits of play-based learning

• Through play children will learn many aspects of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.

• Children remain engaged in play for considerable periods of time impacting on the quality of learning.

• Improves speaking and listening• Helps children to develop social skills• Children are motivated to learn because they

often initiate their own learning. • Play opens up many possibilities for children to

write for a range of purposes.

Three ways of learning• Child initiated – experiences which children

control in terms of experience, time and resources

• Adult focused – individual, pair or group work, differentiated by input

• Adult initiated – activities which arise from adult planning: sufficiently open ended for children to work on independently until the adult is ready to support

whole class subjects

Page 10: Welcome to the Key Stage One Unit

Challenge Activities and Must DoTasks
