Oberholzer, Niël (PhD) Niël Oberholzer holds a BCom Honours (Economics) and an MCom (Investment Management with distinction) from UJ. He has previously worked in the financial markets for 15 years: four years as chief trader and two years as head of global IT for Treasury and Corporate Finance, and joined UJ in 2006. His study explored the informational expectation, asymmetry of information, and the volatility spillover in relation to the postulated Efficient-Market Hypothesis, to determine if information efficiency occurs within BRICS and CARBS. His thesis firstly outlines the “expectation” of the impact of “information” on the DGP within the same market. Secondly, it sought to explore the asymmetry, or the lack thereof, in the price reaction resulting from a market informational disturbance, and thirdly, it aimed to investigate the impact of a volatility spillover between different equity markets. The thesis indicates that markets are informationally efficient in terms of expectations, reaction, and spillovers, however that this efficiency is time-variable, implying abnormal returns are possible.
