Ntsayagae, Esther Ikaege (DCur) Esther Ntsayagae holds a Bachelor of Education in Nursing from the University of Botswana and a Master’s in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the Rand Afrikaans University. She is currently employed as a lecturer at the University of Botswana. She is married with two children, a son and a daughter. She has published in accredited journals. Family caregivers face challenges in caregiving of persons living with mental illness. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a psycho-educational programme to assist family caregivers to effectively cope with caregiving of persons living with mental illness in the home setting in Botswana. The study first started with a situational analysis where a meta-synthesis of phenomenological studies on family caregivers’ lived experiences was done. The findings revealed family caregivers’ experiences with the challenges of caregiving responsibility, and the emotional effect, support and experiences of a changed perspective. Based on the findings, a conceptual framework was developed, which guided the development of a psycho-educational programme to facilitate effective coping of family caregivers caring for persons living with mental illness. The programme evaluation revealed that implementation had a positive impact on the family caregivers. Family caregivers experienced improved communication and self-awareness. The significant contribution of this study was the development of a conceptual framework from which a psycho-educational programme was developed, implemented and evaluated. The psycho-educational programme can be used to facilitate mental health of family caregivers of persons living with mental illness in Botswana. Metsing, Thokozile Ingrid (DPhil) Thokozile Metsing obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Optometry from the University of the North (now referred to as the University of Limpopo) in 1985. Thokozile thereafter practised her profession in Optometry in a private practice for 13 years. She joined the Technikon of Witwatersrand as a lecturer in 2000 and obtained a Master’s degree in Optomery from the University of Johannesburg in 2008. She has submitted articles for publication and presented at an international conference. The early detection of children with visual problems is important for the improvement of academic performance. More than 20% of children in the mainstream (normal) schools were found to have undetected visual problems, despite the School Health Policy, implemented in 2002 and reviewed in 2012, which was designed to detect all the barriers to academic performance including visual impairments. The purpose of this study was to develop strategies to enhance vision screening in South African schools by identifying the most appropriate tests for detecting visual deficiencies at primary health care level. An embedded mixed method design was used. The quantitative approach was non-experimental, cross-sectional, comparative and descriptive. Qualitatively a phenomenological approach was used, which explored and described the experiences of those involved in the execution of school vision screenings. The original contribution of the study is the development of strategies to improve vision screenings at primary health care level, contributing towards successful early detection of children with visual impairments and successful early remediation leading to their improved academic performance. Hoorzook, Kousar Banu (DTech) Kousar Hoorzook started her higher education journey at the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) doing a National Diploma in Biotechnology working towards completing a BTech in Biotechnology. Thereafter, Kousar completed an MTech in Biotechnology at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) before embarking on a DTech Biomedical Technology. Kousar currently works at the UJ Process, Energy and Environment Technology Station on converting products from her doctoral studies into commercial products, like the newly launched UJ mobile laboratory funded by the Technology Innovation Agency. Five papers have been published in international journals from the doctoral studies. Escherichia coli (E. coli), considered a highly specific microbial indicator of faecal pollution from humans and warm-blooded animals, can also be considered a model pathogen because it contains non-pathogenic commensal E. coli (ComEC) and diarrhoeagenic E. coli (DEC) types. Standard culture-based methods are not developed to differentiate between ComEC and DEC and need additional confirmation tests to detect, isolate and confirm the presence of DEC. In this study the candidate developed a DNA extraction method to concentrate bacterial cells from the water samples with subsequent DNA extraction. Thereafter, an 11-gene multiplex PCR (m-PCR) and absolute quantitative Real-Time PCR (q-PCR) was optimised for detection, characterisation and quantification of E. coli in a variety of water samples. The candidate was successful in developing a rapid, sensitive and cost-effective method that produced repeatable and reproducible results to detect, characterise and quantify the different types of E. coli present in treated effluents, and environmental and drinking water. This study concluded that standard indicator methods are not enough to test for E. coli in water and that molecular biology methods need to be used with standard culture-based methods, which may have missed pathogenic and viable but non-culturable E. coli, for routine water analysis. Mieta, Sumayya Ismail Kalloo (DTech) Sumayya Mieta started her academic career at the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) for a National Diploma in Biomedical Technology and after graduation worked as a medical technologist at the NHLS. Sumayya continued her tertiary education and completed BTech and MTech degrees in Biomedical Technology in the Water and Health Research Centre (WHRC) at the University of Johannesburg. Sumayya was successful in securing R1.3 million for the project from the Water Research Commission and is currently doing her first Postdoctoral Fellowship at the WHRC, working on the commercialisation of the lateral flow immunoassay which she developed. Molecular methodologies, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are fast becoming the preferred detection method for pathogen analysis due to its reduced detection time, ease of performance and increased sensitivity. The amplified PCR products are typically visualised by gel electrophoresis, a step that cannot always be achieved in point of care use. The candidate investigated the use of a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the rapid confirmation of PCR products during point of care testing. A sandwich format LFIA was developed to enable the detection of Salmonella-, Shigella- and Vibrio species specific genes amplified with PCR. The test made use of antibodies specific to different dyes incorporated into the different gene fragments during the PCR. The dye and antibody complex is visualized when it conjugates to gold nanoparticles to produce a red line on the test strip. The developed test strips were validated in terms of its specificity, sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility and could successfully detect Salmonella-, Shigella- and Vibrio species in complex samples that included water, food and human stool samples. This developed method can assist in the rapid detection of pathogens during diarrheal outbreaks and water monitoring programmes as it is an easy to use and portable detection method.
