Welcome To The Family 

“Multiply”- An Intergenerational Experience Children’s Ministry will be “tracking with” the adult sermon and homegroup themes this fall.  From September 15th ‐ November 10th, the entire church will consider themes of “living as (a disciple and) a disciple maker”, “living as the church” and “how to study the Bible.” Adults will read Francis Chan’s “Multiply” while children consider these themes in various Bible stories. Stay tuned for lesson plans and family resources. We welcome your prayers for wisdom and creativity as plans are made for this exciting intergenerational adventure!   Classroom Clean-up: New Clean-up System As you know, our teachers dedicate a lot of time to our kids each week preparing and leading the lesson along with setting up and cleaning up the classroom. It is very important that we get help for them each week to clean up. This will take 3 adults each week giving 15 minutes immediately after service. We weren’t very successful getting consistent help with our “Sunday orange card system”, so in the fall, we are going to implement a new process – We will assign specific weeks to each family and publish this information in September. Please contact Pastor Cheryl if you are willing to help administer this system.  Seeking Toddler Room Volunteers After our beloved friend and “toddler whisperer” Sandy Samuels stepped down from her 7‐year run with us, we are seeking volunteers in the Toddler Room. If you love playing with toddlers, ages 1‐3 years old, then this is the ministry for you! What could be more fun than hanging out with our littlest members and sharing the love of God with them by reading, playing and having snacks? If you are interested in volunteering once a month, please contact Michelle Kaneshiro or Pastor Cheryl.

Sep 8    Special Summer Session Celebration   

Youth Led Summer Session from August 4th – September 8th  Our youth group is planning 6 weeks of fantastic fun for our elementary and pre‐school kids.  Each Sunday morning we will learn about different Bible personalities and about things that help us “Stand Strong for God”.  Each week kids will go directly to the fellowship hall for opening worship and singing, then they will divide into two groups and experience Epic Bible Adventure and Imagination Station. In Epic Bible Adventures, the children will hear and experience the Scripture story and in Imagination Station the Bible theme is reinforced with an object lesson and take home “science‐y” gadget. Finally, the children gather back in the fellowship hall for closing worship and goodbyes.  Our goal is to end just a bit later than the adult worship service so that adults might join us in the fellowship hall for the closing fun each week.   Elementary Children will be released to their parents in the fellowship hall.  Pre‐school children must be picked up in room 1.

Bible Memory Verses  During Kingdom Rock we will have 5 Scripture memory verses, each linked to a different “Bible Memory Buddy” character. Your child will receive a ring with 5 tags. Each one has a Scripture verse printed on one side and a “Bible Buddy” picture printed on the other.     You may go to vbsbuddies.com to purchase the app that animates these “Bible Buddies” on your smartphone, iPod or tablet.  The Bible verses for each week are: Aug 4    “I love you Lord, you are my strength.” Psalm 18:1 Aug 11   “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything.” 

Philippians 4:6 Aug 18   “So encourage each other and build each other up.”  

Thessalonians 5:11 Aug 25   “Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal rock.”

Where in the World Will Cheryl Be This Summer?

I will be on vacation in Europe from July 24‐August 23. I have the privilege of officiating at my Goddaughter’s wedding in Germany this summer. Some of you may remember her from her visit here last year. Anna, her friend Inga and my daughter Kathryn supervised the Kid’s Fun Night last fall. Anna and her fiancé will marry in August. We feel very blessed and grateful that our whole family will be able to spend time in Germany and at a vacation home in Denmark this summer. We will be visiting old and dear friends. Tom and I served briefly as missionaries in Europe long before we had children.  It is a dream‐come‐true for us to be able to bring our whole family back this year. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity. I know that your summer Sundays will be blessed in the capable hands of our summer team.

Child Dedications

On Mother’s Day May 12th, we celebrated 3 child dedications ‐ all from the same family! Steve and Claudia Lee dedicated 

Austin, Devin and Ariana to the Lord making this an extra special 

Mother’s Day for Claudia. 

 

Thank You Teachers!  Many thanks to each of our dedicated Sunday School leaders who have faithfully served each Sunday morning.  All of these leaders give regularly of their time (most of them serve twice a month) and energy to shepherd our kids.  Toddler Room: Sandy Samuels, Les Lee, Terri Yim, Sylvia Chin, Noi Schoch, Serena Wang, Connie Woo, Yvonne Gee, Bill Bang, Elaina Huong, Natalie Yakushiji, Karen Jang  Pre­School/K: John Koyama, Joycelyn Koyama, Cynthia Eng, Sarah Cho, Jack Ren, Li‐Mei Johnson, Michelle Kaneshiro  Early Elementary: Linda Fong, Diana Fung, Nancy Matsuoka,  Deanna Wong  Older Elementary: Cindy Chan, Denise Chinn, Dave Hatae, William Ong Serving our children and sharing faith with them is a privilege and a joy. Many of these leaders will be returning to the classroom next year.  Still we need a few more volunteers to work with the toddler, preschool and older elementary children. If you would like to consider growing closer to Jesus through serving our kids please contact Pastor Cheryl and we will talk through options and opportunities. We hope you will consider this fun and exciting ministry!

Summer Session Staff   Our summer session will be staffed by all of our CLC youth group with some adult help. There are a few people who have taken on important roles and deserve special mention.  Jordan Kong is our Summer Youth Intern. Jordan is the son of Monte and Leslie Kong and has attended CLC since childhood. Jordan has just finished his second year at UC Davis, majoring in Managerial Economics.  He is exploring a career in the ministry and will be joining us all summer long as our youth intern. Jordan will be leading the youth as they make summer session happen for our kids!  Nancy Matsuoka will provide support and continuity to our summer session. She has been helping the youth make props and get ready and she will be available all 6 weeks of summer session to support Jordan and the youth. Many, many, thanks Nancy!!  Kristen Koyama will provide consistent leadership for the pre‐school class for 11 weeks (minus two weeks in Hawaii) This will allow our youngest disciples to relax and enjoy their time with Kristen each week.  Kristen has been attending CLC since she was a child. She is a recent graduate of Oakland Tech High School and was just baptized on Father’s Day.

Many thanks to Jack Ren, Diana Fung, Rana Huang, Denise Chinn and Deanna Wong who serve as our first Children’s Ministry Leadership Team.  This team has been meeting for a little over a year. Our first goal was to gather information from families and leaders of CLC about the effectiveness of our Sunday morning ministries.    After a season of information gathering and prayerful reflection, we implemented Bible Discovery in January 2013. This renewed approach to Sunday School involves expanding the number of story lessons and materials explored each year as well as providing better training to teachers for intentional teaching points and wondering/application questions. Each teacher is also encouraged and mentored to develop his or her own authentic storytelling style and voice. We work to better encourage and support meaningful responsive work from the children and to better document and share this work with parents. In addition we have added music and Scripture memory for all ages and Bible tools for the older children (for details see Jan 2013 newsletter on our website).
