The readings for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary time add a bit more to our reflections on our discipleship of Jesus...we have been called, chosen by the Lord, for an intimate re-lationship with God...told we must listen and obey the Word of God...and now two new requirements, or shall we say two new expectations of God for our following. We are called to continually lay our sickness, our broken-ness, our wounds before the Lord for healing. And we are to have an active, personal prayer life that feeds our rela-tionship to God. First of all, our wounds, brokenness and sickness are not willed by God for us. He cannot will evil. Its presence in our lives is permitted, but is never greater than God’s grace and blessing. So, for a disciple, it is necessary that we bring our brokenness to God for healing. That healing could mean removal of the evil or it may mean the strength to endure the pain of the evil. Either outcome is acceptable for a disciple. Bringing the hurts to God means opening my soul to God, allowing God to love me as God wills, not necessarily as I will or wish. Sweet sur-render to God’s will for me! Secondly, prayer is communication with God. We already know we cannot have human relationships without com-munication and we know that diminished and limited com-munication with another leads to a diminished and limited relationship. So, too, with God. No prayer means no liv-ing relationship...diminished or limited prayer means a diminished or limited relationship with the very God with whom I believe I have a relationship. See all the connec-tions? If you do, take courage...you are on the journey of deepening your discipleship of Jesus. Next weekend at all Masses we will begin our serious preparation for Lent, our 40 day retreat on the dying and rising of Jesus. That Sunday evening, February 11, from 6:30 to 8:00, I will have a special evening of reflection on Lent to help you get ready...then on Ash Wednesday, Feb-ruary 14, you can receive the Blessing of Ashes, God’s blessing on your Lenten journey. What a deal! I am pleased to be able to share with you that our recent church project, estimated to cost us around $322,000 for new heating/air conditioning, carpeting/tile, and loft work in the back, came in under budget. Final cost was around $302,000 which was $20,000 under. Thanks for the good work of Dave DeKoninck and our excellent Build-ings and Grounds Committee. May St Joseph continue his prayers for our upcoming Lent. Fr Jim
