who will present the picture and innovation of music education in the 21st century. These people are Prof. Lee Higgins, Ph.D., former President of ISME (International Society of Music Education) from St.York, UK, who will be our keynote speaker, Mr. Servaas Schreuders ( HKU The Netherlands), Prof. Dr. Suminto A.Sayuti (UNY Indonesia), Ass. Prof.
Julie Balantyne, Ph.D. (University of Queensland Australia) as speakers, and Prof. Gary Mc.Pherson (University of Melbourne Australia) who will share his idea and experience by teleconference.
This conference presents more that 100 papers from lecturers, researchers, teachers, and students from 10 countries. These countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, China,

We are very proud because MJM (Malaysian Journal of Music Education (Scopus Q3), CRC Balkema Taylor and Francis Group, and other journals have agreed to work together with us in publishing the papers presented in this seminar. It makes our conference worthwhile and more valuable.
As music teachers and musicians, not only that we are hosting this conference but we are also preparing a music performance which will present traditional and modern music from the east and west. Therefore, we invite you all to watch this special performance.
INTERCOME 2018 is the first international conference hosted by the Music Education Department of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Yogyakarta State University. It takes a lot of efforts to get this far and it is with the support of our Rector and vice rectors of

now happening. Thank you very much for everything you have done for INTERCOME. God bless you all.

We look forward to meeting you again in 2020 Dr. Kun Setyaning Astuti. M.Pd.
Notes from the Rector
8
Music and music education is gaining its importance for the last decade. Although people, to a certain extent, talk more about the development of life science and technology, there is doubt that music plays an important role in creating the balance of life in the universe. Music creates harmony.
As one of the leading universities in Indonesia, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta
(UNY),– now rank 11 nationally – has committed to devote efforts and energy to help foster the development of music and music education. Among the efforts is hosting this conference, the International Conference on Music Education Community (INTERCOME
2018) that is prepared and conducted specifically by the Department of Music Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts. There is plenty of evidence as well that there has been important development and innovation in the field of music and music education. It is
therefore fair enough for us to hope that INTERCOM 2018 will bring forward research findings and ideas about research innovation, and best practices that have been done
around the world to support the development of music and music education.
Finally, appreciation and gratitude are for all committee members and those who have been working hard to make this conference possible. Special thanks go to all the invited speakers who have been willing to share ideas in INTRECOM 2018. I also hope that
this conference will contribute to the upbringing of music and music education not only nationally, but also globally.
Wassalamu’alaikum warrahmatullah wabarakatuh.
Yogyakarta, 25 October 2018
