KYRIE ELEISON “Kyrie for Pentecost” CARL MAULTSBY

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen. The People sit. THE FIRST READING Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (Silence) Reader Here what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 104:25-35,37 Benedic, anima mea Music: CARL MAULTSBY

The cantor sings the “Refrain.” The congregation repeats the “Refrain.” The cantor chants the “Verses.” All sing the “Refrain” as indicated. Refrain

Verses

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Le-viathan,*

which you have made for the sport of it. 28 All of them look to you *

to give them their food in due season. (Refrain) 29 You give it to them; they gather it; *

you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *

you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are cre-ated; * and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works. (Refrain)

The psalm continues on page 6.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *

he touches the mountains and they smoke. 34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *

I will praise my God while I have my being. 35 May these words of mine please him; *

I will rejoice in the Lord. 37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. *

Halle-lujah! (Refrain, 2x)

THE EPISTLE READING 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13

No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

(Silence) Reader Here what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN 508 “Breathe one me, Breath of God” (Nova Vita)

Please stand as you are able and remain standing until the Sermon time. ALLELUIA VERSE

The cantor sings the “Alleluia.” The congregation repeats the “Alleluia.” The cantor chants the verse. All sing the “Alleluia.”

Verse Come, Holy spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire of your love.

from Gradual Psalms for the RCL, ed. Bruce E. Ford, Church Publishing Incorporated THE HOLY GOSPEL John 20:19-23 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The People sit. SERMON NICENE CREED Book of Common Prayer, p. 358 Please stand as you are able.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

RE-OPENING SCHEDULE FOR ST. RICHARD’S Our Guiding Principles: 1. Everything possible should be done to provide people the solace of the church’s sacramental life in a timely and reasonable way. 2. The coronavirus has made the world dangerous and fragile and we are not out of the woods yet. While much has been achieved, there remains the potential that the gains could be lost by a second more virulent wave of the virus. 3. Our Plan to resume in person worship will put the safety and well being of people first. 4. Each member of the St. Richard’s Community will need to take personal responsibility for the common good as well as their own safety.

The clergy, staff and vestry have been taking various recommendations under advisement for when to resume in person worship. We have made the decision to continue our Live Stream Sunday services at 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. through the end of June. In the coming month, we will continue to gather data points about the spread of the coronavirus. We will then collectively decide if we can safely worship together in person and when we will gather together. Thank you for you patience.

What will our Worship Look Like when we gather again in the Church? What you WILL see:

• Open doors so you need not touch a door handle. • Facemasks on all faces. • Hand sanitizer at the door.

THE LORD’S PRAYER, Book of Common Prayer, p. 364

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER AT THIS TIME OF FASTING FROM HOLY COMMUNION

Celebrant A “spiritual communion” is a devotional that we can participate in at any time to express the desire to receive the Holy Communion. Current circumstances impede us from physically partaking of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The St. Richard’s Community is therefore fasting from the bread and wine of the Eucharist and participating in “spiritual communion” with God and each other. Let us pray:

All Jesus Christ our Lord, we believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar which this community faithfully celebrated before our world changed. We love you above all things, and long for you in our souls. Since we cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into our hearts we pray. As though you have already come, we embrace you and unite ourselves entirely to you. Help us to know and feel that we are always connected to you and to each other across time and space. We pray this until we are reunited physically and can share the Body of Christ, the bread of heaven, the Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen.

BLESSING

Celebrant The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant: Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, Father Son and holy Spirit be with you now and for ever and ever. Amen.
