From the Pastor’s Desk Back to the same old – same old. The gospel relates to us the story of how Peter, James and John and a few others return to their former occupation as fishermen. Their new attempts at this profession remind us of when Jesus first found them fishing three years earlier. Peter wasn’t so successful then, “catching nothing” and he and the others weren’t being successful now. Both times Jesus points them in the right direction. The first time Peter tells Jesus to leave him for he is “a sinful man.” The second time Peter leaps into the water to greet Jesus. Now this is the third time Jesus is recorded in John’s gospel as appearing to the disciples. The first time, He extends His peace, His merciful forgiveness,. The second time He chides Thomas for his unbelief and, in a way, also for the other disciples’ inability to convince Thomas about the Lord’s resurrection. Now all is set for them to live in this new reality, this new life they have been promised. But no, they return to their former occupation as if to say that all these events still did not impress upon them the need for them to be messengers of this “good news.” In this third visitation, Jesus makes it clear to Peter and to us that knowing and enjoying the benefits of our being forgiven and saved cannot be put under a bushel basket. Jesus asks: “Do you love me?” Peter answers all too quickly, “I do.” Jesus then puts a condition on Peter’s answer, “then feed my lambs.” Jesus’ poetic language calls Peter and the other disciples to care for people, all sorts of people. Remember Jesus says earlier that He has many sheep in other folds. Three times Jesus asks Peter - the disciples, “Do you love me?” Each reply of “I do,” is followed by the condition that their love be made real by caring for the sheep. Jesus asks us the same question, “Do you love me?” Our reply “I do” is expected to be backed up by actions. Jesus tells us to feed the sheep and care for the lambs. Jesus tells you and me that we should only dare to answer “I do” if we are going to act upon our statement. Jesus has called us out of darkness into a NEW life. Are we ready to act out of the newness we have been given? Avoiding or excusing myself from acting out of that love we profess for Jesus reveals that we don’t understand what real love is. Now, there are many reasons why a person might consider their response to Jesus’ question to be mainly a “private” one. But, Peter is not given that luxury, and neither are we. Though Peter’s response is borne from his heart, it commits him to action on behalf of Jesus. Not just belief, but acting on his belief and love. Love is not real unless it is supported by concrete action. Love for Jesus and the promise of life eternal that He gives us (although we don’t deserve it) remains a warm feeling but does not prepare us for salvation without concrete action by giving of our treasure as well as our time. Here too, some might reason that because of scandal or disagreement about one or the other precept of the Church that they will not participate in this important way. This too does not solve anything but denies those who need our help that must be given directly in Christ’s name through His Body, the Church. Why must it be done in this way? Because, the world will never know the presence of Christ except through the action of His Body, the Church. This action, which the world must see for its salvation, is both sacramental and charitable; one without the other handicaps the full presence of Christ not just for the world but for the people of God as well. You and I are called to Christ’s work both “in season and out of season.” There have been and will always be forces that seek to dissuade us from being who we are intended to be for the world so that darkness can overcome light. The Catholic Services Appeal is an important and concrete way that we act upon our love for Christ. A BIG THANK YOU to all those who have supported the CSA each year. As you know much of what the CSA provides for are ministries that we as a parish cannot do on our own. Helping to support the many Religious Sisters that taught us in school or cared for us in the hospital is one goal of the CSA. Providing for the education of new priests is another goal. Giving support to our youth in growing their experience of Church and their faith is still a further aim of CSA. I request the help of everyone to reach our CSA goal. The few cannot bear the full burden. If you and I answer “I do” to Jesus’ question, “Do you love me?” It is only logical that we show support for the work of His Church.

This week’s Warrior of the Week is Nick Graziani. Nick has been a student at St. Michael School since preschool. He plays soccer, basketball and volleyball and runs track for the Warriors. Nick is also a part of the Student Council and participates in Christmas caroling at the retirement center every year. Nick says, “I love the family feel St. Michael School has. Everyone is friendly to everyone.” Nick will be attending Andrean High School next year. When he leaves SMS, Nick says, “I will miss my friends, teachers and everything about St. Michael’s. Especially the pizza crunchers.” (Nick’s favorite item from the lunch menu.) Nick’s advice to younger students is to start projects the day they’re assigned, not the night before. That’s a good tip! Good luck in your last few weeks of 8th grade, Nick! Submitted by Jen Poskin

Advertisements

In Language Arts, the sixth grade students learned and read about advertisements. As a class, we discussed what types of advertise-ments we see and hear on a regular basis. They learned how advertisements use words and illustrations to help the viewers clarify anything confusing or difficult to understand. They also learned how advertisements often use emotional appeals in their ads and discussed why, or why not, this is fair.

To wrap up our lesson on advertisements, the sixth graders chose groups and created adver-tisements of their own. This project has given the sixth graders an opportunity to be creative, work as a team, speak in front of their peers, and focus on the details.

The sixth grade class had a blast and so did I! Submitted by Megan Mossman

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.

If you would like to advertise in our bulletin, please call Barbara at 219-427-4803.
