From the Pastor’s Desk God expects honesty, not politeness! Most of our relationships with others are grounded in some degree of polite behavior. A certain amount of politeness towards others maintains healthy boundaries. Polite boundaries keep us from revealing our true self to just anyone. Yet, all of us have the need to be accepted for who we are — our foibles and our strengths. That is why we seek out close friendships with people we trust. In such friendships we can express ourselves with little inhibition, trusting that the friend will not leave us. On the other side of the coin, we act as a sounding board for our friends as they express themselves trusting that we will still stick by them. This same sort of openness is what Abraham has with God when he openly challenges God not to destroy all the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. The great sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was their lack of hospitality. The people of these cities abused their guests thus breaking the sacred code of hospitality. Abraham exercised this sacred code in last week’s reading when he entertained the three angels. This week Abraham argues with God like two people who really care for each other and yet still disagree. Abraham pushes God, not with fear in his voice, but with confidence that God will not destroy him for his stance. This is the great faith that is credited to Abraham. It is said that a polite Christian is always disappointed in God. Politeness is good for most of our relationships but not our relationship with God. Our faith is truly exercised when we really speak to God as a friend. Sometimes we have good things to share in prayer; sometimes we have grief. Polite Christians are afraid to argue with God for fear of rousing God’s anger or wrath. Friendships that last are not built on fear but on trust. If you have a bone to pick with God, pick it! God is big enough to listen to your anger or disappointment. Remember though, that friendship is a two-way street. God will challenge you too.

Science is Fun

To help students to understand organ systems, cells, bones, muscles, joints and soil factors, we offered them the opportunity to participate in various dissections and fun activities in the science classroom. Some of those activities included:

Dissection of frog: Our 8th-grade class had the amazing opportunity to perform a frog dissection.

This was my favorite activity we did in Science class this year. I learned a lot, and it was so much fun. I hope other classes will be able to enjoy this interesting experience. I couldn’t have done it without Sr. Serene. -Nena Karr

To be honest the frog dissection was the best thing that we did in this class all year. It was actually really interesting and cool. I’ve never dissected something before and seeing another organism's body and how it worked is truly incredible. It was a wonderful experience and it was so fun to be able to learn all this new information. We also learned many skills with leadership and teamwork. -Catalina Vallejo

Dissection of the plant stem, leaves, and flowers: By doing this, students learned about the two categories of plants: Dicot and Monocot, flower parts and also about the structure of cells and its arrangements.

Chicken Leg Dissection: This dissection helped the students to learn about tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints.

Soil Analysis: It helped them to analyze the Biotic (soil organisms) and the abiotic factors in the soil. Submitted by Sr. Serene

Lord's people?

Here, within St. Michael's Labors of Love Ministry, we do just that! We create items for those that are homeless, those in senior facilities, women who choose life and most recently those experiencing the tragedy of miscarriage. If your heart has been touched and you are moved to help us bring the Love of Christ to those who are in need, please join with us in any of the aspects that we offer. If you are unable to join us at meetings, no worries! We have some members who crochet/sew and drop off their items when they're completed. We ask that you prayerfully consider using your God-given talents to aid us in touching the hearts of our brothers and sisters. Call Kathy at 322-5436 if you have any questions.

Spiritual Adoption Program

Please remember to pray daily for your Spiritually Adopted baby and the baby’s mother and father. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours will be known only to God but in the world to come it is hoped you will meet the child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend happiness with them. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

T W (Readings for August 4, 2019, Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time)

I. Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23 “All things are vanity!” Some people have labored skillfully a whole lifetime, but the fruits of their labor go to others who did nothing. What good comes from hard work? Everything is vanity.

II. Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Since you now belong to Christ, set your heart on things above rather than on things of earth. For in Christ there is not Greek or Jew, slave or free person. “Christ is all and in all.”

III. Luke 12:13-21 Jesus told a parable about the rich man who stored up all his wealth in order to eat, drink and be merry. God told him, “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you.” In this way Jesus encouraged people to grow rich, not for themselves, but in God’s sight.

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.

If you would like to advertise in our bulletin, please call Barbara at 219-427-4803.
