• At Sonoma Heights Elementary School, we BELIEVE all students should be challenged to ACHIEVE at high levels, and will SUCCEED in becoming lifelong learners who are career and college ready.
Mission Statement
• The staff at Sonoma Heights Elementary School will provide a safe learning environment in which students will increase their academic and social skills in order to be career and college ready. We will abide by the following three Collective Commitments:
• We will work in grade level collaborative teams to deliver high quality Tier 1 Instruction to ALL students.
• We will ensure the essential standards are explicitly taught and assessed. We will INTERVENE when students have not mastered the essential standards and challenge those who have demonstrated mastery.
• We will implement PBIS/SEL at all levels with fidelity.

School Day▶ School starts at 8:20 M,T,W,F and at 9:20 Thursdays▶ There is NO supervision on the playground
before 8 a.m. (9:00 on Thursdays).▶ Parents/visitors MUST check in at the office to ensure
the safety of ALL students.▶ Instruction time will not be interrupted during the
school day.▶ If you need to leave items for your child, please visit
the office.▶ Teachers are available for conferences by
appointment. Please call or stop by the classroom after 3:00.
Drop Off▶ Kindergarten and 1st grade students and
their siblings may be dropped off at the kindergarten gate after 8:00.
▶ All other students should be dropped off on Minor or Aiken Streets.
▶ Drop off lane off Minor Street, you may stay in your car and drop students and drive through.
Pick Up Be sure students know where to meet you after school BEFORE they get to school!
▶ Kindergarten - Students are dismissed at 2:55 p.m. onto the kindergarten playground.
▶ First Grade – Students are released in front of the building next to the kindergarten playground.
▶ Second-Third-Fourth Grades – Dismissed at the side and back of school – arrange for pick up on Minor, Aiken or McArthur Streets unless picking up a sibling in kindergarten.
▶ Students do not walk through the building after school, they will use the outside doors.
▶ The front parking area is for staff vehicles and our special needs students with transportation needs. Do not attempt to enter the parking lot at the front of the school during drop-off and pick-up times. This becomes a safety issue.
Sonoma Safety❖ Your child’s safety is our priority!❖ Safety measures are in place to ensure your
children are safe at Sonoma.❖ We practice drills twice monthly and students will
participate in Safety Week September 9th -13th.❖ Please review the Student/Parent Handbook and
look for the Safety flyer that will be sent home with students prior to Safety Week.
❖ Please be sure to model safe behaviors for your children. You are their first and best teacher!

A Partnership for School Safety and Student Well-Being
Attendance and Tardies• Attendance is crucial to success! This
year HCSD has a strict attendance policy. Chronically absent students are tracked by the state department.
• Students with poor attendance miss important instruction and grade level content.
• Student academic performance increases with attendance.
• Start the day out right by getting your children to school on time.
Meals▶ Breakfast is served in the gym from
8:00-8:20 (9-9:20 Thursdays). Students enter the playground, go through the courtyard, and enter the gym at 8:00. ($2.00)
▶ Lunch: 12:00 for K/1st/2nd grade students 12:20 for 3rd/4th grade students. ($3.00)
▶ Meal Applications are available tonight and will be sent home with students. Mrs. Laura Jensen is here tonight to answer any questions you may have regarding meals.

paperwork in order to volunteer. Parents are always welcome!

Additional Information
Cell Phones, Devices or Toys• We are not responsible for lost or stolen devices
• Students will be asked NOT to play with watches or phones during school hours. If this becomes a problem the device will be taken and parents will be contacted.
• Please do not allow children to bring any toy to school.
Bikes and Scooters• Please be sure students use the bike racks and lock up their
bikes. Remind children to watch for traffic and walk bikes across streets.
Clothing and Backpacks• Please mark all outerwear with your child’s name!
What is PBIS? (Positive Behavioral Supports and Interventions)
PBIS is about setting clear and commonly supported expectations, procedures, and routines.
It is for ALL students, ALL staff, in ALL settings.All students take part in PBIS lessons.Lessons teach the Tiger Expectations.
When students make mistakes they are retaught the expectations and given logical consequences
when necessary. Progress is continually monitored and adjusted to
meet the needs of our school.

What does it mean to be a Title 1 school?
▶ Being a Title 1 school means receiving federal funding (Title 1 dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for…▶ Identifying students experiencing academic
difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these students meet the state’s challenging content standards
▶ Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies
▶ Conducting parent and family engagement meetings/trainings/activities
▶ Being a Title 1 school also means parent and family involvement and knowing their rights under ESSA
What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved?
▶ HCSD was allocated approximately $415,000 for the 18-19 school year.
▶ Any LEA (Local Educational Agency) with a Title 1 allocation exceeding $500,000 is required by law to set aside 1% of its Title 1 allocation for parent and family engagement.
▶ Of that 1%, 10% may be reserved at the LEA for system wide initiatives related to parent and family engagement.
▶ Any LEA with a Title 1 allocation exceeding $500,000 must afford parents the right to be involved in how these reserved funds are spent.
What is the Title I Consolidated Plan?

What is my child’s School Designation/Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF) and what does this mean?
▶ According to Nevada Report Card, in 2016-17 Sonoma was rated a One Star School.
▶ According to Nevada Report Card, in 2017-18 Sonoma was rated a Two Star School.
▶ 2018-19 reports are not yet available. Preliminary data shows a designation as a Three Star School.
▶ This rating is based on several data points including attendance, SBAC scores of third and fourth grade students and growth of students from third to fourth grade (closing the achievement gap).
▶ Staff members, students and parents will work together to improve this school rating.
Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI)Based on the 2016-17 data, Sonoma is designated as a CSI school▶ We were a one star school on the Rising Stars List and
identified as needing improvement.▶ CSI schools are capped at two stars in their designation year,
followed by a three-year implementation period.We are improving every year!
