KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777
We are excited to bring the Koren machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to ASBI for the High Holidays 5777. The machzor is one of the clearest articulations of Jewish belief and one of the most powerful tools for Jewish spiritual life. The Koren machzor, with a translation and commentary by Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks, enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to one of Judaism's oldest books. The editorial choices of the Koren Publishing House make this machzor uniquely suited for a Religious Zionist and Modern Orthodox congregation.
We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation towards the purchase of machzorim. Visit asbi.org/machzor-5777.html to learn more and participate.
“Villains in the Tanach” With ASBI Rabbinic Intern Eli Yoggev
This seven-part series on Villains in the Tanach will delve into the biblical profiles of key villains in Jewish tradition. Each meeting will focus on a different antagonist: the Edenic serpent, Esav, Lavan, Pharaoh, Haman, and Amalek. The figures will be portrayed as typologies of one central trait. We will read the narrative and present our understandings of central themes and lessons—all from the perspective of the “villain.” From there, we will discuss the aforementioned trait, address its dangers alongside its positive applications, and raise broader philosophical questions related to the topic. We will also ask: Is this figure really so bad after all?

for an accessible and thought-provoking shiur. Snacks will be
provided.
We are excited to welcome Dr. Malka Zeiger Simkovich back
for a two-part series. December 2: “The History and Legacy of the Chanukah Story”
This lecture will review the ancient sources on the Chanukah story, focusing on the
books of 1 and 2 Maccabees as well as passages in the writings of Josephus and in
rabbinic literature. We will explore the tension between two threads concerning the
origins of the Maccabean dynasty: the military thread and the theological thread. We
will also discuss early Christian thinkers who presented the Maccabean family as
proto-Christian martyrs, and how the Chanukah story figures in early Christian
tradition.
December 16: “Jewish Uprisings in the Roman Empire and the Rabbinic
Approach to Rebellion”
This lecture will focus on the string of Jewish uprisings against the Roman Empire
that were carried out in the first and early second century CE, especially those in the
years 48, 66, 115, and 135. We will discuss what circumstances led to these
rebellions, and how they may have impacted rabbinic approaches to military conflict.
Dr. Malka Simkovich is a visiting instructor of Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological
Union. She earned an MA degree in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University and a BA
in Bible Studies and Music Theory from Stern College of Yeshiva University. She
recently completed a doctorate at Brandeis University, where she studied Second

also works as an editorial assistant for the Harvard Theological Review.
