Welcome to Palm Springs!

Welcome to the 2020 National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education Annual Conference in beautiful Palm Springs, California! The conference theme this year is Leading Beyond the Campus: Driving Change as Experts. This conference is the Congress 2.0 from the first Congress we had in 2014. As promised at the first Congress, we are going to continue discussions around stewardship and driving change in the profession. Our internationalization and diversity awareness efforts are up and running. Stay tuned for details that will be shared during my plenary address and operationalized during the business meeting on Saturday

morning. I am so happy to report that we have made some wonderful changes toward these ends and cannot wait to share them with you. One of the great honors of being President of NAKHE is to select the featured lecturers. I have asked three young professionals to deliver these keynote lectures this year. Jody Langdon (Georgia Southern University) will present the Hanna lecture, Tara Tietjen-Smith (Texas A&M Commerce) will present the Homans lecture, and Brian Culp (Kennesaw State University) will present the Sargent lecture. Do not miss these lectures! They will be informative and timely and will not disappoint. Lastly, I wish to thank Tim Baghurst, the Board of Directors, and all of you who are presenting. You all make this conference a success. Thank you, Tim, for directing, leading, and managing this conference. Your attention to detail, professionalism, and foresight has been evident from over a year out. I look forward to taking advantage of all the wonderful surprises you have in store for us! Please, take time to let him know how much you appreciate his hard work! Thank you, Board of Directors, for advising me, doing your committee work, and responding to my calls all year. You are making my goals as President become a reality. And, most importantly, thank you presenters! You are the purpose – the reason we have an annual meeting. I look forward to attending your presentations and engaging in lively debate with you all! All the best for a great conference experience!

A VPs Perspective

There was once a vice president named Tim Who was elected in what felt like a whim

A conference he prepared As if it none of it cared

So you will find his name labeled as Jim

As Vice President of NAKHE, I am sure there are a plethora of things I should tell you about the organization and conference. The list would be long, the paragraphs boring, and some reactive inhibition (boredom; I challenge you to include it in journal articles!) would be guaranteed. So, let me be brief. The people drive this organization. From the executive committee, to the board of directors, to the committee members, to the membership, to the donors, and to our sponsors, this organization works very hard to make a positive difference in the many different disciplines that fit under the kinesiology umbrella.

If you’re new, welcome to the family! Although this document, in addition to your NAKHE Conference App, will be your guide through this week of activities, find someone and ask if you have questions. Go to the new member’s luncheon and get involved. But above all, have some fun and meet people. Enjoy your week, and If you have any questions, ask for “Jim.”

Tim Baghurst NAKHE Vice President

2020 Keynote Speaker

Hal Lawson

Professional Socialization and Knowledge for Practice in the Neo-liberal University Friday 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Hal A. Lawson is a Professor of Social Welfare and Professor of Educational Administration and Policy Studies at the University of Albany. He also contributes to research and development in Public Health and Kinesiology. These interdisciplinary affiliations announce Hal as a bridging scholar who works at the boundaries of research, policy, professional education, and practice. In addition to an extensive publication record and substantial external funding, Hal’s work includes consultations and evaluations for school districts, universities, public social service systems,

and state, provincial, and international education agencies. Over his career, Hal has received numerous awards including the University of Albany’s Inaugural Lifetime Career Achievement Award for Outreach and Engagement Scholarship.

NAKHE Journals

NAKHE operates two journals with different foci. Quest’s overarching aim is to stimulate scholarly discourse on issues pertinent to kinesiology and physical education in higher education. The mission of the International Journal of Kinesiology in Higher Education is to provide a forum for those in the field of kinesiology to share new, introductory, or small-scale research in addition to best practices in leadership, administration, and teaching with a special focus on early career professionals and graduate students.
