BANNS OF MARRIAGE III Chelsea Kimmel & Aaron Broering

The Musings of Our Pastor An unlikely prospect it surely was that Kenneth G. Alt, a C-average student, would ever go off to college, much less graduate school! Life itself, along with the workings of God's grace, though, can bring some wonderful surprises to us as we explore the roads of life. The inklings of a budding vocation to the priesthood opened up a pathway after graduation from the 8th Grade to attend, of all things, a college-prep school, Brunnerdale High School Seminary, in Canton, OH, where I continued to be a C-average student. During my senior year in high school, the time came to take the anxiety-producing SAT college entrance exam, which was heavy on Math and not my forte at all! I did so poorly that the President of St. Joseph's College sent me a letter acknowledging that I was "accepted with warning" into college, which was like say-ing I would not survive the rigors of college studies and would probably go home in short order. To the surprise of some, I applied myself with vim and vigor, so much so, that I graduated from St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, IN, "with honors", along with a Bachelor's Degree in History. In 1978, I earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary, Cincinnati, OH, and was ordained to the priesthood in June of that year. What an unlikely prospect it was that Kenneth G. Alt would have what it takes to achieve such things! With the upcoming celebration of All Saints Day on November 1st, a whole bunch of faith-filled Catholic people feel that is such a very unlikely, far-fetched prospect that they will ever be able to achieve the kind of holiness or likeness to God, which would bring them to the "crowning glory" of being a saint with God in Heaven. Isn't that the grandeur, the spectacle, the wonder of All Saints’ Day in a nutshell? Ordinary men, women, and youth, like ourselves, from all walks of life and from all places on Planet Earth, who were struggling with the realities of sin and God’s calling, were, in the big picture, committed to serving the Lord with loving and devoted hearts to the best of their abilities. For them, achieving holiness, growing in the likeness of the Lord, and "becoming saints" did not happen by praying in church 24/7! Marriage & family life, one's day-to-day work, entanglement in all sorts of civic and social activities, so many ordinary, unspectacular and messy things proved to be the arenas in which they would seek to serve the Lord with a loving and devoted heart through faith. In many cases, there was nothing particularly heroic or newsworthy or of exceptional quality to be celebrated in their lives, but a persistent commitment to be faithful to the Lord in all things to the best extent possible. These are the small "s" saints we honor in a special way on November 1st, All Saints’ Day. The prospects of me becoming a saint, fat chance, right? Wrong! For each of us, this is our most fundamental vocation or calling through faith. God's marvelous, powerful, and timely graces can help us reach such "crowning glory" , ultimately sending us to be with God in Heaven. Are you up to the challenge? Being sinful does not exclude any of us! Being faithful and devoted to God in the mix of life on earth

makes "becoming saints" possible for each of us. Go for it. —Fr. Ken
