Emily Phillips reports that Kelly Brown,Corporate Financial Analyst in the Atlantaoffice is a classic example of someone who,out of a desire to lose weight and improveher overall health and well being, canbecome an inspiration to us all.

In November 2006, Kelly completed theFull Iron Man Triathlon competition inPanama City, Florida. This consists of a 2.4mile swim in the ocean, 112 miles on abike and finally 26.2 mile run. This isaccomplished without breaks betweenevents as any breaks count towards therecorded time.

Kelly had enlisted a certified USA triathloncoach to help prepare her for the event, which kept her toned and injury free.Kelly’s build up to this event was aninterest in running, leading to participatingin her first 10k run in 2001. Building up toher first of several Triathlon ‘Sprints” (a 600metre swim, an 11 mile bike ride and a 5krun), this was followed by two Half IronMan Triathlons, a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 milebike ride and a 13.1 mile run.

Kelly, when asked what she had learnedfrom her accomplishment said, “Aside fromgetting physically fit – you learn to eat theright things, set yourself goals, what a greatstress reliever regular exercise can be, andyou get to meet some interesting andawesome people participating in theseevents.”

Kelly’s advice about exercise is “Just dosomething - walk, bike, swim, walk the dog.Find something that suits your lifestyle andstart gradually.”

This local landmark that can be seen fromthe Fenner headquarters in Hessle wasofficially opened in 1981 by H.M. theQueen. It spans the North and Southbanks of the River Humber and is overone mile long, with it’s two towers standingover 500ft high.

Celebrations to mark the occasion beganat the beginning of the year whenapplications were taken to abseil from thevery top of the two towers (north bank)with the Royal Marines. This had neverbefore been open to the general public.

Knowing that I had wanted to do“something” to raise money for charity, myhusband sent in my application as abirthday gift and after a 60 foot trainingassessment, I was accepted for thechallenge, along with almost 200 others.

On a very misty and wet Sunday morning,my time arrived. To my own surprise Iwasn’t nervous, I just wanted to do it.

After climbing over the barrier, settling intothe harness and a smile for the camera, itwas time to go.The view, even in the mistwas magnificent, I began to shake about 50feet down. This was the adrenaline kicking

in. But once I relaxed and got on with it,the rest of the way was just great fun andon reaching the bottom I was on anamazing high.

The team of Marines from the North EastRegiment were fantastic. They were veryprofessional, putting you at easeand making the wholeexperience one that I will neverforget, especially discovering thatColin ‘Milky’ Milkens, the Marinethat had looked after me so wellon the way down, had done theabseil with a broken finger!

I must say a big thank you toeveryone who supported andsponsored me for this event. Iraised £1,300 for TheInternational Rescue Corps, which is a British voluntaryorganisation, who’s patron is SirRichard Branson. Members giveup their time and training torescue people all over the worldfrom natural disasters such asfloods and earthquakes and at home areclosely linked with the Humber RescueTeam.

The Adelaide team recently completed the installation oftwo off 210mx1200mm wide three ply belts to a newlyconstructed snake sandwich high angled shipload conveyorat the Port Adelaide docking facility.

Conveyors of this nature utilise two conventionalsmooth surface belts that sandwich material betweenthem. By exploiting the conveyors natural belt tensionthrough a profile of successive alternative convexcurves, hugging pressure is applied to the conveyedmaterial. This pressure develops internal friction withinthe material, in this case sand, and prevents materialslide-back at any angle up to a vertical (90 degrees).

As the 22 Metre high structure was still under construction, the three day installationpresented a number of safety implications and mechanical challenges. The Adelaidetechnicians along with Project Manager Rob Joyner were able to draw upon experiencegained in 2006 on board a vessel in Singapore, having a similar application and completedthe project on time and without incident.

RETIREMENT DEWBarbara Dew (Fenner Drives Wilmington), pictured centre, retiredafter more than 17 years service. Barbara started working withEfson, now known as Fenner Drives, in July of 1989. She mostlyworked in the Assembly Department. She set the bar very highfor others to follow. Even though she was the lead person in herdepartment, she’d never ask anyone to do anything that shewouldn’t do herself. Barbara plans to spend her time travelling andspending time with her eight grandchildren. She’s off to Germanyto spend a few weeks with her daughter and family. Then, whoknows where.

We wish her well in her retirement.

Eric Smith pictured right, is smiling at the “parking space” sign presentedby Mike Thompson, Managing Director of Fenner Precision, for 20years service with the company. Even though Eric works for FennerPrecision, Manheim, he works from home in Chicago, so the only"Parking Space" he has, is on his own driveway. Congratulations Eric!

As Fenner Drives pushed for market sharein the ceramic and roofing tile manufacturingsector, early successes were quicklytempered by apparent gaps in its Eagleurethane and polyester belting product linevs. key European market competitors.

Rapid new product development programsover the last quarter have led to theFebruary 2007 market launch of four newPVC and urethane grip top beltingderivatives under the Eagle and PowerTwistbrand names.

Whilst all three PVC topped derivativeswere based on pre-existing Leeds orManheim manufacturing technology, thedevelopment of the Eagle Ivory 85 SGTrequired starting from scratch as neitherplant had ever bonded successfully twodissimilar urethane polymers and thenthermo-formed the required grip topsurface.

Twenty-two different ideas about how thiscould be achieved came out from a “thinktank” session, these were quickly distilled

down to four potentially viable options.TheFenner Drives’ New Product DevelopmentTeam “rolled the dice”, picked their favourite– which fortunately turned out to be aquick time winner!

WEAR IT PINK DAYFenner Advanced Sealing Technologies at Hampton supported“Wear it Pink” to raise money for the Breast Cancer AwarenessCampaign. The event was a huge success, everyone in the companytook part, some even suffering humiliation for the cause!

Employees either came to work wearing something pink or choseto wear a pink ribbon to support the charity. Fundraising eventsincluded a “guess the baby competition”, a car wash-athon, andseveral members of management opting to have long pink falsenails applied for the day. Although there were initially protests onthe day it has been noted how quickly and how well they wereable to adapt to them!

The factory fashion parade drew the most excitement, thecompany’s newest recruits, Pauline and Wynifred (alias PaulAnthony, Commercial Manager and Wyn Jenkins, Group QualityManager) made a huge impression, one that will certainly not beforgotten for quite a while!

Hampton raised a total of £2,036.00 for the charity which waspresented to Breast Cancer Campaign’s Jackie Barrett when shevisited the factory. Breast Cancer Campaign is dedicated toresearching the cure for breast cancer and has helped to fund 14new projects in this last year alone, any one of them could take usone step closer to better treatments for this disease.

Fenner Group headquarters at Hessle and Fenner Dunlop at Marfleetalso joined in the “Wear it Pink” day and raised £200 between them for this great cause.

ERIC'S 20 YEAR SERVICE

Snow, sleet and rain slammed into Canadaand the north–eastern United States in theworst storms this winter.

At work, the Rotocure Crew knew that abelt needed to be finished and sent out.

Headed by Jeff Bier, who stayed until the jobwas done, a team of dedicated staff made it

happen. Some third shift employees bravedthe weather and came in early. Joe Maresand Ted Wilkens came in three hours beforetheir shift was due to begin. Carl Taylorstruggled in for his shift on Wednesdaymorning.

The level was still at 3 when Maintenancejoined the team. Rick Roach put in a twelvehour shift instead of eight, as did RogerMattox who came in four hours early to shiftsnow. In the 1930’s the Fenner factory at Marfleet in Hull was situated adjacent to the largest docks on the east coast of Britain outside of theThames and was therefore very vulnerable to enemy bombing. With this in mind, the total Marfleet operations were transferred to factories inthe West Yorkshire and Lancashire. Fortunately, the move was completed before 1941 when the Marfleet site suffered massive bomb damage.

We believe the above photograph is of the wartime employees at the Colne factory in Lancashire which housed the V-belt and flat belt weavingdepartments. In all, Fenner had five factories scattered about West Yorkshire and Lancashire with each one making a significant contribution tothe country’s war effort.
