• The mission of the Object Management Group (OMG) is to develop technology standards that provide real-world value for multiple vertical industries.

• OMG is dedicated to bringing together its international membership of end-users, vendors, government agencies, universities and research institutions to develop and revise these standards as technologies change throughout the years.

OMG builds communities

• Mission: to develop international standards to automate software quality measurement and to promote the development and sustainment of secure, reliable, and trustworthy software.

• Through the work of CISQ, industry-supported standardshave been developed to measure software size, structural quality, and technical debt from source code. These standards are used by IT organizations, IT service providers, and software vendors in contracting, developing, testing, accepting, and deploying software applications.

What makes the OMG SDO successful?

Well-documented

Mature

Open

Fair

Our Policies and Procedures are definedand modified by our entire community, to evolve for the needs of the community, and are available to all.

Any organization or company in industry, academia, or government may join the OMG.All specifications are available for free to the public.

OMG operates under a one member = one voterule. This helps ensure that it is the value of the technologies that put them into publication, not the size of the supporting organization.

OMG’s process has been refined for over 30years, has created nearly 250 specifications, and several thousand fully documentedrevisions.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Structure of the SDO is multi-tier to handle different aspects of specification production and review. The Technology Committees (and their Task Forces) concentrate on the technical concerns – does a technical solution provide proper fit to purpose for the problem seen in industry? (We want solutions to have the highest degree of technical merit.) The Architecture Board (5 members elected from each TC) provides oversight to the entirety of the ecosystem of specifications (inside *and* outside OMG) and reviews all relevant documents for adherence to the OMG processes. (We don’t duplicate efforts and try and create a cohesive system of complementary technologies.) The Board of Directors focuses on the needs of business in industry, and ensures that a proposed specification will find real-world value and likely adoption. (We don’t publish useless specs.)

What is the difference

between an RFP and an RFC? • For industry needs

that can be solved by standardization

• Requirements are written by the Task Force, vetted by the AB, and issued by the TC

• The industry is invited to respond with proposed solutions

• For existing technologies that are relevant to a current Task Force adoption plan

• Have a commercially-available, commercially-used or open-source implementation, and…

• Are without material competition

Request for Comment (RFC)

Is an RFP or RFC right for us?

Request for Proposal(RFP)

Request for Comment (RFC)

• 12-24 months

• Can feel slow, with many layers of review and feedback

• Once completed, product is above reproach

• 9-18 months

• Seen as ‘faster’, but…

• ONE COMMENT can derail and terminate process sending spec back to RFP process for further input opportunities

• Now 9-18 months plus12-24 months…

June 14, 2021 Copyright © 2021 OMG. All rights reserved. 57

Request for Information (RFI): Anyone can respond to an RFI – no membership required

Request for Proposal (RFP): Authoring of the requirements for a specification is performed by OMG members

Letter of Intent (LOI): Anyone – members and nonmembers – can submit an LOI, which is not legally binding

Submission of Specification: All LOI submitters must be members at the right level by the first submission deadline to submit a response and remain on the voting list

Filing of Issues: Anyone in the world may file an issue at any time against any OMG specification

Handling of Issues: Fixes and enhancements are proposed, voted on, and woven into specification

Helpful hints

• Work with the Technical Department team – Juergen Boldt, and, Jason Smith – to be sure you have your ducks in a row

• Publish early and often – the AB is a source of valuable feedback and the earlier they can review the work, the better

• Visit other Task Forces to promote your work, seek input and form alliances
