Welcome to NCM 110Nursing InformaticsPrepared by: ARNEL C. MAGHINAY, RN, PhD
Informatics Theory1
Nursing Informatics⬥ An established and growing area of specialization in
nursing. ⬥ All nurses employ information technologies in their
practice. ⬥ Informatics nurses are key persons in the design,
development, implementation, and evaluation of these technologies and in the development of the specialty’s body of knowledge.

Informatics Nurse/InformaticsNurse Specialist
⬥ An informatics nurse (IN) is a registered nurse who has experience in nursing informatics.
⬥ Informatics nurse specialists (INS) are prepared at the graduate level (master’s degree) with specialty courses in nursing informatics.
⬥ An INS functions as a graduate-level-prepared specialty nurse.

Nursing Process
6
Informatics and Healthcare Informatics⬥ Informatics is a science that combines a domain science,
computer science, information science, and cognitive science.
⬥ Healthcare informatics may be defined as the integration of healthcare sciences, computer science, information science, and cognitive science to assist in the management of healthcare information.
7
Nursing Informatics
⬥ Nursing informatics (NI) is a subset of healthcare informatics.
8
Models for Nursing Informatics⬥ Clinical-Information-System (CIS) model
⬦ Shows how modelling can be used to organize different concepts into a logical whole.
Graves and Corcoran’s Model

Schwirian Model
11
Turley’s Model
12
McGonigle and Mastrian Model
13
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ A theory is a scholarly,
organized view of some aspect of the world.
⬥ Theories can describe, explain, predict, or prescribe selected phenomena within this reality.
14
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Nursing Theories
o Grand Nursing Theorieso Middle-range Nursing Theories
15
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Computer Science
⬦ Computer science is the study of algorithms for solving computation problems. If an algorithm can be identified for solving a particular problem, an automated solution to the problem can be developed.
16
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Information Science
⬦ Information science focuses on the gathering, manipulation, classification, storage, and retrieval of recorded knowledge.
17
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Communication
⬦ Communication theory uses the core concepts of The Mathematical Theory of Communication and additional principles developed to analyze information transfer and the effectiveness and efficiency of communications.
18
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Cognitive Science
⬦ Cognitive science is the study of the mind—of how we think.
19
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Systems
⬦ Systems theory relates to the properties of systems as a whole. Systems theory focuses on the organization and interdependence of relationships within a system.
20
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Behavioral and Social Sciences
⬦ The study of behavior.⬦ The processes driving actions⬩ The focus of the behavioral and social sciences.
21
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Change
⬦ Change is disruptive, messy, and complicated.
22
Lewin’s basic planned-change model1. Unfreezing2. Changing3. Refreezing
23
Diffusion of Innovations⬥ Everett Rogers identified five specific groups of innovation
adopters.⬥ These groups are known as innovators, early adopters, early
majority, late majority, and laggards.
24
Five (5) stage model for the diffusion of innovation
⬥ Stage 1 - knowledge⬥ Stage 2 - persuasion⬥ Stage 3 - makes a decision⬥ Stage 4 – implementation⬥ Stage 5 - confirmation
25
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Learning
⬦ Learning is a process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values through study, experience, or teaching.
26
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Organizational Behavior
⬦ Organizational behavior is a distinct field focused on organizations.
27
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Management
⬦ Management science uses mathematics and other analytical methods to help make better decisions, generally in a business context.
28
Theories Supporting Nursing Informatics⬥ Group Dynamics
⬦ Group dynamics is a social science field that focuses on the nature of groups.
⬦ Urges to belong or to identify may make for distinctly different attitudes (recognized or unrecognized), and the influence of a group may rapidly become strong, influencing or overwhelming individual proclivities and actions.
29
Tuckman’s Stages, for a group.⬥ Tuckman’s model states that the ideal group decision
making process should occur in four stages:1. Forming2. Storming3. Norming4. Performing
30
Nursing Informatics Framework⬥ The framework for Nursing Informatics relies on the
central concepts of the following:1. Data2. Information3. Knowledge
