Curricular principles of Maths Mastery
• Fewer topics in greater depth • Mastery for all pupils• Number sense and place value
come first• Problem solving is central
.
Mathematics MasteryWhat does a maths mastery lesson look like?
• 6 parts – active and engaging• (Do Now, New Learning, Talk Task, Developed learning, Independent
Task, Plenary)
• Concrete objects (Concrete, pictorial, abstract)
• Partner talk tasks
• Use of full sentences
• Transitions = no time wasted
• Maths meetings
Mathematics MasteryThe lesson starts with a Do Now Task
• The children are active and engaged initially with a warm up task.
• Often this is at the tables, sometimes it is a song on the carpet.
Example of a Year 1 Do Now Task
Each unit starts with a Big Picture to give context to the learning and engage children.
Mathematics Mastery
The teacher will introduce star words and keyvocabulary. The language that children use is key to their understanding. After the star words, the teacher will introduce some new learning, which is followed by a talk task.
Talk tasks and tell me a story

Mathematics Mastery
TransitionsBetween each part of the lesson, children will transition to and from the carpet. This helps to keep them alert, not sitting still for too long and helps to rehearse key skills such as counting. Transition videos
Ark Academy ReceptionArk Conwey – Year 1or 2
We use a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approachStart with concrete opportunities: Ten frames, part part whole model,
bar model…
CPA videos
Place Value is key and the concept of regrouping is introduced in Year 1 with concrete manipulatives, mainly dienes.
Children are also taught to represent numbers and calculations pictorially as well as to interpret them. They then use their understanding to complete an independent task.
PlenaryMisconceptions are addressed. We celebrate and reflect on our learning. We apply our knowledge to a problem.
The Daily Maths Meeting
• Consolidates learning already taught. 15 mins at a different time in the day.
• Fun! Songs/chants.
• Focus on Place value/shape/time/
• calendar work /number sense.
How can you support at home?- Doodle Maths- Through play and use of language (compare/reason)- Spend money!- Tell the time/measure time- Identify shapes- Games with the tens frame.- Talk and share – keep it fun!- Use the language- Playing Cards – number bonds- Measure
