Dear State Advisor,

Welcome to Showin’ for the Roses, the 2017 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) and thank you for taking the time to serve as a state junior advisor. Your dedication to Hereford youth is greatly appreciated. This booklet is jam-packed with information regarding contests and schedules occurring throughout the week. This booklet includes all contest rules and age breaks. All sign-ups will be electronic this year and we are excited about how this will stream line the process for everyone. Contest sign-up forms are available on the Hereford Events app or on the Resources page at hereford.org. We will have computers and iPads set up in the show office for anyone who wishes to use them for contest sign-up. This is the ONLY way juniors can sign-up for JNHE contests. Contest sign-up ends on Saturday, July 15th at 6 p.m. By this time, all entries must be entered on their respective electronic forms. The NJHA Board is excited about the Super States Award sponsored by GKB Cattle, and we hope all the states, big and small, will get involved in all aspects of the JNHE and compete for the fifth Super States Award. The delegate orientation and director candidate roundtable dinner will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 15th evening in West Hall 3. We have 9 director candidates vying for 4 positions. Please refer to the regions on page 6 to see how the election will take place. Available positions include: 4 from the Northwest Region, 1 from the Southwest Region, 1 from the Northeast Region, and 2 from the Southeast Region. The NJHA board has implemented a minimum age of 16 for all voting delegates. The state delegate nomination form is online at hereford.org and on the Hereford Events app. This form needs to be completed by a state advisor by noon, Saturday, July 15th, so we can get nametags made prior to the orientation that evening. Remember delegates must be 16 in order to represent their state. We have invited all members to the NJHA membership meeting on Monday night and had 300 sign up to attend, so that is exciting. Herdsman of the Year voting will be handled electronically again this year. We ask that the state advisors coordinate a vote amongst their members and turn in the counts electronically via the Hereford Events app or the kiosk that will be available for your use in the show office no later than 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 20th. This is one of our most prestigious awards, and we appreciate your help as we gather as many votes as possible for the Herdsman of the Year. The nomination slate will be publicized starting on Tuesday. We hope you find this is a convenient process in insuring all juniors are signed up for contests. We ask for your cooperation in getting all the contestants from your state signed up. As for the judging contest, participants were to sign up by June 1st with their entries. After the contest the top four scores in each division for your state will make up your state’s team. With all of the tours and activities on Monday, we are asking judging contestants to be in the stands in Broadbent Arena by 7:30 a.m. so we can start the first class at 8 a.m. If you have any questions about contest sign-up, an AHA Staff or NJHA Board member would be more than willing to assist you. New this year is the Hereford Headlines blog on jrhereford.org, we encourage all Hereford enthusiasts to visit the blog leading up to and throughout the week of JNHE. We will also continue to use the Hereford Events app to keep exhibitors, advisors and families up to date and informed throughout the week. Download the app today on your Apple or Android device and help us spread the word. Hereford.org, the National Junior Hereford Association Facebook page and the Hereford Events app have a lot of valuable information about the show. Download the app this week and get plugged into the NJHA’s social media and Web site outlets to make your stay in Louisville an enjoyable one. Thank you for your service to Hereford youth. State Voting Delegate State Advisors: Please remind state voting delegates the importance of taking this position seriously. The individuals elected will be leaders and role models for the National Junior Hereford Association. It was decided by the NJHA Board of Directors that voting delegates must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Two voting delegates may be named from each state to represent that state during the national director election. For states with two associations (one polled and one horned): each segment of that association may select one voting delegate, to equal the two per state. National Director Candidates may not serve as voting delegates.

NJHA by-laws Article III, Section 3: The voting rights of members shall be vested exclusively in the organizational members, each of which shall be entitled to designate one delegate (two per state, one per state association unless that state has one, merged association recognized by the state Hereford Association and the National Junior Hereford Association) and each such delegate shall be entitled to cast one vote on each matter submitted to a vote of the members. Regional associations (associations composed of more than one state) will be entitled to two voting delegates; individual states within such regions will not be allotted individual voting delegates. A state must have at least 15 active members to qualify as a state association. The delegates must be individual members of the National Junior Hereford Association. The individual members of the National Junior Hereford Association as such, shall have no voting rights. National director candidates are not eligible to serve as voting delegates at the annual meeting concurrent with their candidacy.

“Meet the Candidates” will be in the West Hall 3. All state delegates are required to attend the dinner and round-table discussion. The National Membership Meeting, with the election of new NJHA directors, will be held on Monday, July 17th in the West Hall 3 – 4.

State Voting Delegate Schedule: Saturday, July 15th

8 a.m.: Candidate Interviews – West Hall 2 7 p.m.: State delegate dinner followed by meet the candidates Round Table Discussion –West Hall 3- 4

Monday, July 17th 7 p.m.: NJHA Membership meeting & election of NJHA Board of Directors – West Hall 3 - 4

Tips and Guidelines:

- Dress to Impress! Someday it could be you up there giving those speeches. So get out of those dirty barn clothes and freshen up. - Be on time! This cannot be stressed enough. We want to get the show on the road and have enough time for everyone’s speeches and questions. Try to show up a good 10-15 minutes before the scheduled meeting time. PLEASE do not come late. - Pay attention. Electing new board members is a big deal. For three years, four of these candidates will have important roles in making many decisions that will affect you. Be sure to listen and pay attention to the candidate’s points. Their speeches are your keys to making your voting decision. - Be respectful. This is HUGE. Getting up in front of people can be very nerve racking to some. So please give the candidates your undivided attention and your utmost respect. Listen intently, laugh only when appropriate, and give them your attention. - Come prepared. Be ready with 2, maybe 3, questions that you would like to ask the candidates. - Be appropriate. Ask questions that are appropriate for occasion, relevant to the candidacy, and please keep them PG. If questions are noticed as inappropriate, the junior will be dismissed from the meeting. - Ask away! Do not be scared to ask questions. No question is a stupid question. - There will be no cell phone usage during any of the meetings. It is disrespectful and rude to those speaking. You will be dismissed in the event such as this.

- The third and final match will consist of two rounds. There will be one 12- question round where any member can answer, one 12- question round for one- on- one competition, and one final jeopardy round where the teams will risk “x” points, confer on the question, and give one written team answer within 30 seconds.

points risked will be decided by the individual teams.

The event, sponsored jointly by the National Hereford Women (NHW), Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) and the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) will be held Sunday, July 11th, with presentations held in the West Hall Courtyard and presentations in West Hall 7. Participants should use imagination and creativity in choosing a category and serving the finished entrée in a 3-6 minute skit or demonstration type presentation. Skit/demonstration needs to be memorized and notes may be used as references only. DO NOT read your presentation. A timer with time cards will be available. When your time is up, the timer will call time and you must end your presentation. Following the presentation, judges will have 5 minutes to ask questions. Judges must also stop questions at the end of their allotted time.

- Participants will have 5 minutes total to set up and remove their food and props. The time may be used in any frame your wish (i.e. 3 minutes set up and 2 minutes removal). Parents may help in this area.
