Before the Industrial Revolution began, many women earned extra money at home by working in the domestic/cottage system. They then sold their textiles (clothes) at market.

After the Industrial Revolution began,people were no longer manufacturing textiles at home. Instead, they became part of the factory system. This is where you went to work in a factory six days a week and usually worked around twelve hours a day. The pay was about 5 to 15 cents per day. The work was hard and the floor managerswere quite often cruel to the help.

The workers moved into tenements which were high rise buildings with cheap rooms to rent right next to the factories. After numerous tenements were developed and became rundown, these areas became known as slums.
