• Can you remember what are the ‘spelling principles’ when you add –ed, -ing, -er to a word?
• Top TIP: Think about the words add, change, chop and double?
Add
• When the root word ends consonant, consonant just add the suffix (er/ing/ ed)
jump
•e.g. jump - jumper - jumping - jumped
Double
• Double the consonant and add the suffix (er/ing/ ed) when we have a short vowel followed by a consonant at the end of the root word
short vowel = i
so double the consonant p
skip
• e.g. skip - skipper - skipping - skipped
Chop
• When the root word ends in a vowel, chop the vowel (a,e,I,o,,u) and add the suffix (er/ing/ ed)
bounce
• e.g. bounce - bouncer - bouncing - bounced
Change
• When the last letter of the root word is a ‘y’, you change the ‘y’ for an ‘i’ and add –ed
• Remember to change the ‘y’ for an ‘i’
cry to cried
e.g. try to tried, fry to fried, reply to replied, spy to spied
Change
• There are some irregular verbs that change entirely when writing in the past tense. You just have to learn them!
• e.g.
• eat = ate
• sing = sang
• run = ran
• catch = caught
• teach = taught
