What is Online Safety?

Online Safety is Defined as…

The knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety against security

risks to private information and property associated with using the

Internet and the self-protection from computer crime in general.

Rings of Responsibility

• Self = Staying safe and keeping healthy

• Family and Friends = Helping and listening to others

• Community = Following rules to safely engage on the Internet

Inappropriate Content & Information

• Adult Activities

• Violence

• Hateful Words

• Risky of Illegal Behavior • Embarrassing things about

you or other people

• Hate Speech

Posting Inappropriate content online means your child may build a bad

reputation, face consequences at home, at school, or even by law enforcement.

It could lead to the loss of device privileges and/or disciplinary action.

Beware of Predators

Online Predators:

• Engage in predatory, exploitative behavior through an online presence

• Online Predators utilize computational networking systems in the form of the Internet to take advantage of or prey upon their victims

Threats/Safety

What is a Threat?

• An expression of an intention to inflict pain, harm, or punishment.

• This can be directed at an individual, group, or organization.

If you see a threat, please notify the police and school immediately.

Cyberbullying

If you see it happening:

• Show support

• Refuse to join in

• Report it to school

What is it?

• Using the Internet or electronic means to make another person feel angry, sad, or scared

• It is something that is done repeatedly What to do if you have a concern:

• Take a screenshot

• Notify the school

• Close or delete it

• If necessary, contact local law enforcement

Best Practices

• Never share personal information

• Use privacy settings and check them often

• Choose appropriate screen names

• Only accept friend request from and communicate with people you also know offline

Responsibilities

• Bring the device to school daily and ensure it is charged before leaving for school.

• At home, keep your device and accessories in a secure place. Take care of each item.

• At school, never leave your device unattended.

• Do not change the settings or remove any hardware or software on the device.

• If your device is lost or stolen, report it immediately to the VILS Coach. (A police report may be necessary.)

• If your device malfunctions, please see the VILS Coach.

VILS iPad Agreement

❑Usage shall not exceed 10 GB per month.

❑No billable or paid applications may be downloaded except those provided by my

school.

❑Personal hotspots on the device may not be used.

❑Hardware (i.e. case or SIM Card ) or software may not be removed from the device.

❑Device may only be used in the U.S.

❑International calls, videos, texts or pictures are not permitted.

❑Immediately report any lost or stolen device to the school principal.

❑The device may not be sold or transferred to a third party. A third party is also not

allowed to use the wireless service.

❑Service may be terminated at any time without notice.

❑Take care of the device assigned to me and agree to kind and safe digital

interactions with others.

M-DCPS Acceptable Use Policy

• Accessing the internet through district equipment is a privilege, not a right.

• Utilization of the network must be consistent with educational objectives.

• Inappropriate use may result in cancellation of the privileges.

• Students must adhere to the Student Code of

Conduct, as well as general acceptable use of

network etiquette.

Wellness Checks & End Of Year Inventory

• Students will participate in device Wellness Checks during the year to sure healthy connectively throughout the year.

• Students will return their device and charger at the end of the school year.

• Students will receive their device and charger again at the beginning of the following school year.

How Student iPads are Managed

• Through the Self-Service Icon you and your

family can download apps!

• Don’t worry… All apps have been pre-

approved by MDCPS

• The JAMF Self Service software will keep

the devices up to date and secure,

ensuring students have the resources, apps

❑ A six characters alpha & numeric passcode, becomes active after 60 minutes.

•Touch ID

1. Tap the

Settings icon.

2. Tap Touch ID &

Passcode, then

Add a Fingerprint

❑ Touch ID is an electronic fingerprint recognition feature, that allows users to

unlock Apple devices, make purchases in the various Apple digital media stores

(the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the Apple Books Store), and authenticate Apple

Pay online or in apps.

4. Place any finger on

the home button to

capture the print.

5. Gently reapply the finger

over the sensor to fully

capture the print, filling in

the lines.

steps to confirm the

finger print.

8. After confirming the

print, tap Continue a

final time.

9. If a passcode has not already been

set, you will be prompted to enter one

now. It must meet the 6-digit

requirement, and must be confirmed. 10. Verify that

iPad Unlock is

enabled. You

are now able

to unlock your

iPad with your

fingerprint.

•Connect to Wireless Home Network:

1. Tap the Settings icon. 2. Tap Wi-Fi. 3. Confirm that Wi-Fi is set to On.

5.Enter your network's encryption key if you're prompted and tap Join.

4.Choose your network from

the list provided.

6. The joined network will now be

listed with a checkmark next to it.

1. From the iPad Home screen,

tap the Safari icon. The Safari

web browser starts up.

❑ Access to the iPad User Guide is a nice easy guide

to access, as it located right on the iPad.

2. Tap the Bookmark icon. On

the Bookmarks menu that

appears, tap iPad User Guide…

3. Tap the iPad User Guide to

open.
