The Pulling Together Canoe Society mandate is: Recognizing the past by Pull- ing Together to enhance understanding between Public Service Agencies and Aboriginal Peoples by Canoeing the traditional highway, strengthening our future relations. What started out in 2001 with just a few canoes, a handful of police officers along with First Nations has now grown into more than 20 canoes participating in these journeys and the participants range from Elders, Youth, Police Officers, Canadian Navy officers, Department of Fisheries Officers along side many Aboriginal Peoples' from all over the lower mainland, Penticton and Vancouver Island. Over the years, the canoes have travelled down the Fraser River, through the waters of the sun- shine coast, paddled the entire Okanagan Lake, travelled over to Vancouver Island and visited communities in the Greater Vancouver area. One of the reasons that these journeys are so successful is that it really does open up the opportu- nities for cultural sharing and building a better understanding between First Nations and public service agencies. Spending a week or so together, in canoes, following the protocols of the First Nations communities has strengthened relationships not only between the all the participants, but also with the folks that live in the communities we visit. November - Rotary Foundation Month

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication

As of 15 September, Rotarians have raised about $190 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization cam-paigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze chil-dren, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

PolioPlus, the most ambitious program in Rotary’s his-tory, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedi-cated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Today, PolioPlus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.

In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
