Responsibilities of Students

ATTENDANCE It is VERY important to be in class. Each day builds on the information and skills learned from day(s) before. If you miss work due to illness, music lesson, etc., it is your responsibility to make up the missed work. Please contact your teachers to make up any missed work. HOMEWORK Homework assignments are designed to reinforce and practice the concepts presented in class. Students are expected to write down their assignments in their agendas each day and complete all homework. Homework should be neatly done and on time. GRADING Progress is evaluated every five weeks. You will receive a progress report in the middle of each quarter and a report card will be available at the end of each quarter (10 weeks). Each teacher will explain their specific grading policy the first few days of school. Parents and students have the benefit of checking grades regularly through the Parent/Student Portal. 5th GRADE RULES:

Follow directions the first time they are given Be on time for class and seated quietly when the bell rings Be prepared for class with all supplies Make sure to have all homework completed and submitted on

time Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself

Students are most successful when their parents are in involved in

their learning and education. The PTA communication is a vital link in the process! The PTA

informational page is located on the school website.

Summer Reading Program

Benjamin Franklin Middle School

Dear Parent/Guardians:

Summer is almost here! You can almost smell the sunscreen. That means it is time to prepare for your child’s

many hours of free time.  Parents and guardians….it is time for a plan. Summer reading!!

One of the best ways to prepare a child to be successful in middle school is to encourage that some of those

fun‐filled summer days are spent reading great books! Summer reading provides valuable, worthwhile

entertainment, and it exposes students to rich experiences beyond the classroom.  Additionally, reading a

variety of books increases knowledge, vocabulary and improves the mental focus and stamina needed for

success in school.  Therefore, it is strongly recommended middle school students read 2 books or more

during the summer.

Fortunately, there are a wealth of middle school authors that appeal to a middle school reader’s sense of

survival, mystery, romance, fantasy and humor.  Suggested summer reading lists  are available on the BFMS

main website www.kenton.k12.ny.us, and under the BFMS library tab.    Additional lists are available at your

local libraries, www.buffalolib.org .  Books for nooks, kindles and other readers are also available through

online bookstores and the public library at https://www.overdrive.com/.  Some popular series and authors

for middle school students include Warrior (Erin Hunter), Spirit Animals, Shadow Children (Margaret Haddix),

Goosebumps (R.L. Stine), The Selection (Kiera Cass), Divergent (Veronica Roth), Maze Runner (James

Dashner), The Mortal Instruments (Cassandra Clare) and Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling).

Encourage your child to find out what their friends are reading, and he or she can share in the summer fun!

In September, students will turn in “BFMS Reading Coupons” for a chance to win cool prizes.  Copies of the

coupons are available on the BFMS library website and/or will be available from their teacher in September.

The coupons ask students to keep track of titles, authors and a short description of their favorite scenes.

Thank you in advance for supporting a love of reading and the development of critical learning habits.

Any title approved by a parent is acceptable for summer reading.

Happy reading and we’ll see you in September!

Thank you BFMS PTA for continuing to sponsor our Remarkable Readers Celebrations!!!
