UNIT 1 – Driving Is Your Responsibility

SOME QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:

• ARE YOU A RESPONSIBLE PERSON?

• ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO BE ISSUED A DRIVER’S LICENSE?

• WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY? (Covered in depth in Unit 1)

• FACT: The fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16- to 19-year-olds is roughly three times the rate for drivers aged 20 and older, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

• REACTION: California in 2006 enacted laws that substantially restrict the ability of teen drivers — those below the age of 18 — to do certain things when behind the wheel.

UNIT 1 - Responsibility(Cont’d)

• Q. Why is the department discriminating against teen drivers?

• A. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not support discrimination. DMV is responsible for ensuring traffic safety. Statistics show provisional drivers are more likely to receive citations or be involved in a serious accident between 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The goal of the law in effect requiring the provisional restrictions is to reduce accidents and save lives.

• It looks like we are going to be out of time, so when we hear the bell, you may leave… Be on-time tomorrow.
